To ask if you have a velcro cat?

I have a 7 year old female cat who I love, she's got a very gentle and affectionate nature however she is incredibly clingy.

She has outdoor access but only goes out if the weather is warm, and even then it's a couple of hours at most. She was out this morning but was meowing to come in after 10 minutes.

She likes to sit on my lap and sit next to me at all times and be petted at all times, which is lovely usually but occasionally I feel I need a break. She has toys, cat tv and so on.

Occasionally I just shut myself in my bedroom, she cries at the door for a bit but eventually stops. I can't afford a second cat, I mean yes I can afford food etc. But living on my own I can't afford two lots of insurance, pet sitter fees and vet bills.

Has anyone found other techniques for their cat? It can be tricky if i WFH too.

What is cat TV!??

CowTown · 16/04/2025 14:56

I did. I got another cat for her to hang out with.

What is cat TV!??

It's basically birds, insects, mice etc. Appearing on the screen! It's a YouTube channel, seems quite entertaining for cats.

I just can't financially commit to a second cat sadly, I live alone and have no financial support. Also worried they may not get on.

Ive just shut the door for a little bit and she's outside crying.

We have 3 cats. One of them is absolutely bonded to my dd. The cat sleeps on her, follows her around the house, and cries if she leaves the house other than to go to school.

we all try to give the cat attention. She likes playing fetch so we do that a couple of times a day.

Really though, we just accept it. My dd loves her cat and her cat loves her. That they are together almost every second dd is home just seems normal.

Springhassprungxx · 16/04/2025 15:08

My cat is like this op - drives me mad!!! Sorry no advice cos he is happy to be outside too.

BlackCatsAreBrilliant · 16/04/2025 15:13

My old cat was a velcro cat. She would perch on whichever part of my body was most horizontal - lap, shoulder, back, calves, etc.

I never found a solution other than accepting it.

I still miss her.

wishiwasupahill · 16/04/2025 15:15

feel so strange reading this.

my cat is totally aloof. He can take me or leave me.

tolerates the occasional rub and seems to enjoy it but when he’s had enough, he’s had enough.

Generally likes to be alone.

he is an outdoor cat, maybe that makes a difference, I’m not sure.

i do think he likes us though. We were away in March for a long weekend, neighbour was popping in to feed him.
I lifted him up when we got back, usually he will tolerate it for a minute or two then wriggle to get down but this time I stood there holding him and stroking his fur for 15+ minutes Smile

UndermyShoeJoe · 16/04/2025 15:16

She’s not ginger is she. My ginger is a people cat not a cat cat 😅

JoanOgden · 16/04/2025 15:23

Yes, though not quite as much as yours! I've written many papers and attended many virtual meetings with her asleep on my lap (I shut her out if it's a really senior meeting). And I'm very used to waking up with a cat asleep on my head. So I have no advice really Grin

NImumconfused · 16/04/2025 15:26

Yes, I've got one of those, can't give you any advice though as I've never found any way to change her behaviour, I just accept being used as a human cat bed!

declutteringonedayatatime · 16/04/2025 15:31

My male cat has turned into a part-time velcro cat now that he is a bit older. He likes to sit on my shoulder if he can and sometimes just follows me about. It is lovely sometimes but annoying if you just want to go on your laptop.

Getting another cat is unlikely to help tbh, cats aren't pack animals like dogs, they are solitary creatures and rarely take happily to a strange new cat being imposed on them. The only time I've had two cats get on well together was because they were brother and sister and together from birth. I have an

intermittent velcro cat, in that she will leave me alone for a few hours but then has the urge to climb up and 'knead' on me for about ten minutes every couple of hours. If I'm not immediately available for this (behind a closed door etc) she will yowl loudly and scratch at the door for a good 20 mins. If I'm nearby and just not giving attention she'll claw at my legs gently for a reaction.

Onionbhajisandwich · 16/04/2025 15:46

I do and to be honest I love it. She’s my first baby and she’s 18 now so I’m making the most of the time that I have left with her.

Cryingatthegym · 16/04/2025 16:22

Yes I've got one of these. She's more like a puppy than a cat. I don't have any solutions though, that's just how she is and we accept it!

Sometimes when I'm exhausted and touched out by the kids at the end of the day I do get a bit irritated and shoo her away, but she just goes to get her fuss from DD10 if I do that!

TheDandyLion · 16/04/2025 16:27

Yes, but mine is just a heat thief. She buggers off if its warm and lolls about in the direct sun but on days like today she'll be on my lap and following me around the house shouting at me to sit down so she can sit down.

Overtheatlantic · 16/04/2025 19:08

Yes but only partially. I’ve been ordered upstairs for cuddles, outside for walks in the garden, and to get off my phone to give her a fuss. She sleeps on my hip. I accept it because she gives so much in return and it’s an honour to be loved by her.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 16/04/2025 19:47

We have a house full of velcro cats.
Useful for getting other people to do stuff for you while pleading "I can't move, I'm incapussitated".

I need to go out in five minutes...

CheeseWisely · 16/04/2025 19:50

Mine is like this and he’s an indoor (by his own choice) so there’s no let-up. If anything he’s got worse since DS came along because there are times he CAN’T be on me, so he wants to be at literally every other opportunity. It’s annoying but in our case he’s 15 and in sketchy health so I remind myself I’ll miss it when he’s gone!

Mum2jenny · 16/04/2025 20:04

My Velcro pet is a dog, however she has more cat tendencies than dog ones

That's the law in our house; if the cat's on you, you're excused.

She's not really a velcro cat; she was not handled as a kitten by the first people who had her. So to start with she didn't want to be touched or near us at all. She's nine now and we're very much her people, but all fussing and being sat on is on her terms.

If I were you I'd set aside time daily to play with her with wand toys and so on, give her a proper period of undivided attention. You might be able to get some peace for a bit if she can expect some intense play periodically. You'll need to train her to expect cat-free times, it'll be hard at first but she'll get used to it when it's more routine.

I do wish I'd started getting ours sleeping downstairs or just somewhere NOT on me overnight, it would be distressing to impose this on her now, but I do get much better sleep on holiday when she's in the cattery...

Gettingbysomehow · 16/04/2025 20:24

Madam here is 100% velcro. I work from home and she is by my side the whole time. I have another cat who Is three and they get on fine but it hasn't changed her at all.
Velcro cat is the white tabby. Eve the black cat longs to cuddle with tabby but tabby prefers her human. The look of longing on Eve's face says it all.

Dillydollydingdong · 16/04/2025 20:30

Cats don't tend to get ill all the time like dogs do. I've never had a cat insured and never had a cast sitter if we go away. They just need someone to come in and feed them twice a day.

HouseCaptain · 16/04/2025 20:34

My cat adores me and spends as much time as she can with me. I am very flattered by her loyalty and love the affection.

Dontsayyouloveme · 16/04/2025 20:37

Yep, my gorgeous girl is my shadow… follows me everywhere, and I love it.. except for this.. when I’m trying to work…
