To ask if you have a velcro cat?

I have a 7 year old female cat who I love, she's got a very gentle and affectionate nature however she is incredibly clingy.

She has outdoor access but only goes out if the weather is warm, and even then it's a couple of hours at most. She was out this morning but was meowing to come in after 10 minutes.

She likes to sit on my lap and sit next to me at all times and be petted at all times, which is lovely usually but occasionally I feel I need a break. She has toys, cat tv and so on.

Occasionally I just shut myself in my bedroom, she cries at the door for a bit but eventually stops. I can't afford a second cat, I mean yes I can afford food etc. But living on my own I can't afford two lots of insurance, pet sitter fees and vet bills.

Has anyone found other techniques for their cat? It can be tricky if i WFH too.

She’s not ginger is she. My ginger is a people cat not a cat cat 😅

I have 3 gingers... All velcro cats!

I am pinned in by them all if I am sitting or laying down. Usually at least one on me, the others beside.

They have each other but will cry for me if I close the bathroom door and follow me everywhere 😂

Mine is a partial velcro.

She loves to be outside if it is sunny and she visits my neighbours but on a morning I find myself typing on here with her curled up on my arm.

BUT

If there is a male in the house I do not get a look in. Her favourite person is my dad. He arrives, sits down and she is on his knee.

Until we sit at the table to eat where she jumps up on his knee under the table and I pretend I have not seen her. When he goes to bed she follows him.

She is almost the same with my carer.

When I am on my own she is either on me, asleep next to me, asleep on me or demanding I let her in / out.

Yes, we've got 3! (Previously 2 but a stray recently decided to move in with us). I worked almost exclusively from home for 4 years in my old job, but have just started a new role that's office based. One of the cats has gone into an almost full depression although still insists on getting in bed with us and snuggling into me for a cuddle every night!

I have three cats, two come for occasional cuddles whilst the other has to be touching me at all times. I have no idea what the solution is, I don't think there is one. Mine have definitely got worse as they've got older.

Aw I wish I did! My cat is a dick!

Mine is more of an opposite polarity magnet to me. I am allowed to stroke on my birthday and Christmas if I’ve been very good. Otherwise she manages to move out of my reach without actually moving. She allows me to share her sofa, though. So there’s that.

Pure Velcro. Little angel creature who wants constant snuggles. Likes 5 mins outside, doesn't leave the garden and wants to come straight back in however will gladly come outside with us if we're gardening. Hates all other cats, just wants to be cuddled and stroked all the time by a human. Preferably my DH, DH is his favourite member of the household. He loves being picked up and held like a baby. I honestly didn't know cats could be like this before I met this one Blush

Maggiethecat · 17/04/2025 10:53

Ive always told DH that mine knows the sound of the car and will come to the door when we drive up and park somewhere along our road and of course he dismissed this, saying she responded to the sound of the key in the door.

Yesterday he was was shocked that while in the bedroom with her she suddenly jumped on the window sill and when he looked I had just driven up and then she ran downstairs to the front door 😂

She is semi Velcro, has a specific sofa that as soon as I sit in is her invitation to my lap, she’ll sleep on my side of the bed in the days, only spends a few minutes in the garden before howling to come back in. But I love her dearly.

If you get another cat, you could just end up with 2 velcro cats 😂
My two seem to have some kind of tag team thing going on. There's always one desperately vying for attention. I wfh so spend plenty of time with them but it's pretty constant. No where is off limits to them so they sleep with me, come to the bathroom with me, etc etc. Sometimes one will be sat on my lap and the other comes along and looks so disappointed that my lap isn't free! Although sometimes they both just squeeze on together.

I don't really mind because I adore them! But I always find it funny when people talk about how independent cats are.

chibsortig · 17/04/2025 11:27

Even getting a second cat might not help. I did that for my first cat Vera but she hates Jeph with passion. It could be cos he's a ginger idiot though.
Both of them are pretty aloof regarding me unless I'm sleeping then Vera has to lay on my pillow as close to my head as possible.

Just put her outside, it's sunny and not too cold so thought she'd be out a while. Miaowing to come back in after 10 minutes 😅
