To ask for a jewellery thread?

I always love the jewellery threads and today I picked up a really special piece.

My great aunt had a large Topaz ring which I always loved and she specified that I get it when she died. I've finally got around to having it reset and I absolutely love it!

Can I see your pieces?

That is a beautiful ring. How come you had it reset and what was the original setting?

burblish · 15/04/2025 21:43

That's a gorgeous stone!

Sansan18 · 15/04/2025 21:49

It was an antique gold setting. Pretty but gold just doesn't suit me at all so a hardly ever wore it which I thought was a shame. The claws were also quite thin and worn so I was worried the stone might come loose.

Lovely! Can I ask what metal you had it reset in, op? I find it hard to tell white metals apart.

Congrats on being ready to wear your heirloom.

Congrats on being ready to wear your heirloom.

It's white gold. I know it's not the most durable and I'll have to have it dipped at some point but the platinum option was eye wateringly expensive! I won't be wearing it at work though so that will hopefully prolong it.

Very pretty 😍

Bigcat25 · 15/04/2025 22:54

I think your great aunt would be comforted to know that her loved items were being worn, appreciated, and staying in the family.

The ring looks beautiful and modern.

Ah thank you so much. She didn't have children of her own, she was a huge part of my dad's life and she treated me and my sister like her own grandchildren. I miss her terribly. Sounds silly but even though it didn't suit my style, I would wear the ring to things I knew she'd have enjoyed so she could experience it with me.

Aw, that's so nice. I have a few pins from a great aunt I was named after, admired, but never met. I haven't worn them bc they are hard to wear, and/or damaged, but I should.

Aw yes you should!
Or if not, have them re modelled. I admit I felt a bit guilty changing the ring, but then I figured she'd rather I wear it then keep.it in mt jewellery box so she'd be fine with it 😊

Bautiful ring, specially if it came from your family member. I love vintage rings and usually buy one for each celebrationGrin

Where do you get your jewellery from?

PenguinChops · 15/04/2025 23:44

That’s lovely OP. Really nice piece

I collect little bits of antique jewellery here and there. Recent pieces have been a 1913 Chester assayed 18 carat gold pink tourmaline ring and an 1860 18 carat gold snake ring with diamond eyes and a sapphire head.

Where do you get your jewellery from?

Some are from antique jewllery shops, some from sellers online like Etsy, ebay. Whenever I visit a new city I always keep an eye on jewllery shops. It takes ages to find one I like and also within budget. I am yet to look for one for my birthday which was a month agoWink.

Bigcat25 · 16/04/2025 01:09

Wow, PukekokeKup, those are amazing rings! I'm very picky about jewelery settings and I'm surprised to see such modern settins in vintage rings. The gold ruby? and sapphire are stunning.

Have a chat with a silver/goldsmith? They would be able to remodel the pins into a piece of jewellery you love.

A friend had some inherited jewellery remodelled into a bangle - the goldsmith melted the gold and reset the stones in a contemporary design. It's stunning.

Llori · 16/04/2025 01:34

Thank you, yes, its 15ct ruby and gold, quite unusual but I Iove it. The sapphire one is 18ct diamond and ceylon sapphire.

IHeartHalloumi · 16/04/2025 07:18

Lovely ring! Can I be nosy and ask roughly what remodelling cost? I have a second hand ring (on holiday so can't post a pic) which I like but in a chunkier setting than I'd like. Emerald but with a visible flaw so might not be worth remodelling it though.

It was £1300, I let them keep the gold and sold them another ring which came off the price.
