The poshest county in the UK?

Eyes98 · 10/04/2025 22:57

Which one county would you say is the outright poshest in the UK? Let’s not use Greater London here, and I know there will be social diversity in all, but which would you say is the poshest overall?
I’m going with Berkshire, darling.😂

Berkshire has suffered from proximity to London creep

That's been going on since the 50s. Everyone I went to school with, their parents had moved out from London and that was in the 70s and 80s.

ofcourseitschanged · 11/04/2025 09:33

Oxfordshire and ignore the Town itself especially the pretentiousness of Summertown, (parts of)

BobbyBiscuits · 11/04/2025 09:36

I would say Surrey or Bucks. But I used to live in high wycombe which is a crud hole. Even in chesham there are some rough estates. Aylesbury is another dreadful place that looks superficially quite 'naice.'

Least posh probably south Yorkshire/Lincolnshire or whatever they call the county with Middlesbrough in it?

Shetlands · 11/04/2025 09:38

What do you mean by 'posh'?
If it's 'new money' rich people who have a couple of generations of wealth created from 'trade' then they aren't the same 'posh' as 'old money' landed estate families.

The former might be more concentrated around the home counties with easy access to London.

Many of the latter have roots in counties with prime agricultural land and profitable tenanted farms. They often have a town house in London too.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 11/04/2025 09:40

Bucks or Herts

AelinAG · 11/04/2025 09:41

Wherever Windsor is?

Yes

Wherever Windsor is?

Definitely not. Windsor and Slough basically form a continuous metropolitan area.

Eyes98 · 10/04/2025 23:05

Interesting when you consider a few of the Oxford city suburbs are very rough indeed!

But Barton is lovely 😁

ERthree · 11/04/2025 09:48

Sutherland

Biffbaff · 11/04/2025 09:51

Cambridgeshire is a hole!

Cornwall has to win the award for most snooty

Surrey most pretentious

The "rough" parts of Oxford are as good as it gets elsewhere.

Bobbie1976 · 11/04/2025 09:51

Norfolk

Kent,we have the best schools, and I live in a bubble where the celebrities live in a road that homes are worth 5-7 million quid. Lovely neighbours,so absolutely not bothered.
They are just people who go to same supermarkets and walk their friendly dogs.

If you split them West Kent isn't that dissimilar to Surrey, but it's still not top tier. From someone who grew up in West Kent then moved East.

HonoraBridge · 11/04/2025 09:56

Norfolk. Lots of royals including the King at Sandringham.

100percenthagitude · 11/04/2025 10:04

Define "posh". Are we talking old money or those nasty arrivistes?

Find it fascinating that pretty much all of your posts are questions @Eyes98 . Can see you're on housewife capital of the UK this morning, too. Feels very researchy. If you were knocking some column filling dross for one of those very unposh women's mags! 🤣🤣

snowmichael · 11/04/2025 10:09

Obviously Surrey

InWithThePlums · 11/04/2025 10:10

AbsolutelyZero · 10/04/2025 23:40

Nailed on Berkshire.

Cheshire in the Midlands.

North Yorkshire in the North.

Cheshire is not in the Midlands!

And the poll is rigged.

snowmichael · 11/04/2025 10:11

And to everyone saying 'Bucks' I have one word for you
Slough
So bad Bucks pretends it's in Berks, and even Berks doesn't want it

SleeplessInWherever · 11/04/2025 10:12

Having relocated from Middlesbrough to Cheshire, I can confirm that it’s definitely posher.. and more expensive!

Whether it’s fully posh I don’t know, since I clearly originate from the slums 😂

I am surprised by how widely known it apparently is that Boro is “rough,” I always thought we were basically an unknown place on a map!

Bucks is not posh.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 11/04/2025 10:14

Hampshire or Dorset.

Pices · 11/04/2025 10:17

Oxfordshire. It can’t be Bucks. It doesn’t have enough private schools. Lots of people move there for the grammars.

Purplebunnie · 11/04/2025 10:21

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 11/04/2025 01:31

Buckinghamshire. I lived there for about 35 years and the homes along Cokes Lane in Little Chalfont grew in price to ridiculous amounts, £2m plus. And Noel Gallagher and The Osbornes lived there so it was extra posh 😂😂😂

I had to look up where Coke Lane was as I used to work in Little Chalfont. Yeah I used to drive down there to work sometimes to avoid going through Amersham having come via the back of Chequers when they were building the Wendover bypass. Never knew what it was called

There are some absolutely stunning properties around there and Chalfont St Giles

Eyes98 · 10/04/2025 23:45

Excluding Peterborough what would you say then?

Much the same tbf

It doesn't really contain the wealth or the fanciness of the Cotswolds. Outside the city itself, there's a fair number of rural towns and villages with lack of opportunity. Some of the towns are nice but overall nit posh.
