The poshest county in the UK?

Which one county would you say is the outright poshest in the UK? Let’s not use Greater London here, and I know there will be social diversity in all, but which would you say is the poshest overall?
I’m going with Berkshire, darling.😂

Define posh please

You can be posh without money. I also think some posh people try really hard to hold onto their posh credentials to maintain superiority over the next door neighbours who only just came into money.

Definitely they do!

You absolutely can be wealthy and posh.

But posh is a cultural concept more than a economics concept.

At least it is to me. Clearly some see more overlap between wealth and poshness.

And yes agas are quite posh and there’s nothing wrong with tweed

That's why I asked for a definition of 'posh' as it's often a lifestyle 'choice'.
But the choice is helped by being rich.

We could get into the territory of socio-economic classifications and whether posh people are all in the A band, and the plebs are in D band, but that's another thread.

But you've not defined what posh is (in your opinion.)

You've just made snide comment about 'new money'

Well I’m backing off because the more I think about it, the more it seems it’s hard to define posh without starting to be a bit rude.

Trumpsgoneloco · 11/04/2025 09:21

No, you are misunderstanding. I don't think old money is superior to new money but many with old money do. Or do you disagree

Having lived in Eastleigh I agree, hole and shit come to mind!!

But Amazingstoke is great surely😂

Edited

Hampshire is a massive county, it's not all Eastleigh and Basingstoke..

I think it depends how they spend it tbh

Trumpsgoneloco · 11/04/2025 09:23

I am actually baffled you inferred that I was being snide from my post!

suah · 11/04/2025 09:23

I live in Berkshire and I’m guessing the people who think Berkshire is posh are people who have never been here!

You can be wealthy AND posh- and sometimes they do go together (ignoring people like the Beckhams.)

Of course you can, but you can also be wealthy without being posh, and even posh without being wealthy in some cases.

Wintersgirl · 11/04/2025 09:22

There’s very posh bits in Hampshire but it’s also quite uneven. I’m not sure that makes it any less posh than other counties though.

DevonCreamTeaPlease · 11/04/2025 09:04

so how do you define posh?

There will be an ONS survey on this and posh will be defined by both the cost of housing and the income of the residents.

So it will come down to wealth.

If you want to define 'posh' as going to Glyndebourne, wearing tatty old tweeds, driving an ancient Jaguar, hunting, having an Aga or two, and eschewing the trappings of wealth as shown by Oligarchs, that's different.

There are ONS surveys at the other end of the spectrum, with deprivation indices. You can input your (full) postcode and see where you come out of around 30,000 postcode areas.

Obviously, poor ≠ non-posh; but it covers all kinds of circumstances for each area: financial, employment opportunities, transport links etc.

Last time I looked at the main deprivation index, 8 out of the 10 most deprived postcodes in England were in Blackpool; yet - like every other county - Lancashire also has some very posh and well-to-do areas too.

LadyLucyWells · 11/04/2025 09:25

I would say either Surrey or Kent. Probably Kent just pips Surrey to the post.

Berkshire has suffered from proximity to London creep

Yes Petersfield comes to mind, very much the green wellie brigade!

TiredCatLady · 11/04/2025 09:26

I would have said Surrey before I actually spent any time there. It has some spectacularly rough parts absolute shitholes rubbing up against the private schools, mansions and golf courses.
As @PyongyangKipperbang says though - what definition of “posh” are we going by? Old money, new money, RP, royalty? Port out starboard home isn’t really a measure.

Trumpsgoneloco · 11/04/2025 09:27

Same, does anyone remember the Fucking Fulfords? 🤣

Berkshire doesn’t actually exist any more, apart from as a historical county, so it’s a moot point to ask whether Slough is in it.

Historically though, I believe it was.

They dissolved the county council but Berkshire still exists geographically.

Or worse if they go on the hunts.

Berkshire NHS Trust covers Slough.

Indeed! Most people use it as an inoffensive term to mean 'silly people' without actually knowing the rhyming etymology!

Kent definitely is NOT posh.
