Upset about weight 37 yo

Bendylendy · 06/04/2025 18:27

I’m a 37 year old mum of 2. I used to be a size 8 and now am a 14. It’s got me down. I am quite short and hubby is much taller and lankier so it feels weird when you look at us and I am quite conscious about it. Anyone else in same boat?

I was 8 stone before I had both my children, I'm just under 12 stone now. I'm working on it, trying to eat healthy, work out more.

You can either sit around being sad about your body, or you can change it

Bendylendy · 06/04/2025 18:30

I work ft now so I do tend to snack a lot and don’t go gym as often but before I never put on as much or as easily. My mum is a size 16 so might be genetic?

PrettayGood · 06/04/2025 18:31

Of course it’s not genetic!

Do something about it before you’re morbidly obese.

Agix · 06/04/2025 18:31

Whether you gain weight easily or not can certainly be genetics, but that doesn't mean there's nothing you can do about it.

ILoveMJ · 06/04/2025 18:32

Yes. This was me! I was a slender 8 to 10 before DS2, then after he was born I just kept gaining. Diets just never worked as well as they used to. I'm 47 now and by Christmas this year was squeezing into size 14 (probably was a 16 but didn't let myself buy a 16!) and my BMI had reached almost 27.

(I'm not recommending this, but on Jan 1st I went on mounjaro and I'm now BMI of 20.5. I've lost 3 stone! I'm sadly not quite back to size 8 to 10 as I'm an apple and carry weight round my middle, but I'm definitely looking more like my old self and it feels great).

I was so depressed last year seeing my weight and just not feeling like myself. No amount of running, swimming or calorie counting seemed to help me. I hated how I was feeling :(

Bendylendy · 06/04/2025 18:38

Not sure about the jabs.

My mum gained weight after pregnancy and then gained more. She became obese and died of an obesity related illness. I have the exact same body shape, colouring and features as her, so her genes are strong in me. But I am 55, have had 3 children and menopause, and weigh 8 stone 11. I don't know if gaining weight is genetic or not, but given it caused my mum to die decades too soon, I'm not chancing it, and excercise as much as I need to and moderate my calorie intake to a level that keeps my weight stable. Whether that's particular hard because of my genes, I don't know. I only know its possible and for me, worth it.

Yeah! I understand that! I am not recommending it because obviously I had to be dishonest on the online forms and that's not recommendable no. But it has worked incredibly for me. I'm 10 years older than you though - so if you imagine how shit you feel now, then imagine 10 more years of it!! And 10 more years of yo-yo dieting, you can probably see why I was driven to it!! I have been incredibly lucky that I've hardly had any side effects and mentally I feel amazing now I can fit into old clothes again. So for me the jab has worked well!

You don’t need weight loss jabs at size 14. Just some old fashioned hard work.
Cut the snacks out, eat whole foods as much as possible, protein with every meal, walk 10k
steps daily and get in 3 x good exercise sessions a week- mix of weights and cardio.

It will be the snacking and not exercising, not your genes.

Size 14 isn’t that big and it won’t take you long to lose the weight. Do something about it now and in a few months you could easily be a size 10 again. Don’t just ignore it, the risk is you keep gaining and then it becomes a harder problem to fix.

Bendylendy · 06/04/2025 18:47

Also a bit paranoid about my hubby as I’m sure he follows scantily clad women on insta who might be curvy but not fat!

This makes me feel better about never having been a size 8 even as a teen. When I was a size 12 then I felt huge, still a size 12 now I feel fine. Honestly though, your metabolism will be slowing down. Stop snacking and try calorie counting just to set a baseline as you may not have been aware of how much you could get away with before. I’ve never been able to get away with anything!

Maybe a lot of men do this but I wouldn’t know if it’s ok or normal or not.

I was a size 6-8 for a while even after my first born.

It’s big compared to an 8

Well, yes. So do something about it now rather than wait until you’re a size 22, which is big compared to a 14.

How horrible! A size 14 is hardly morbidly obese!

AlwaysCoffee25 · 06/04/2025 19:18

Me too op. I’ve always been very active and a size 8-10.

I actually lost the weight after both my pregnancies within 6m but it’s crept up again. I’m now 11.5st which is my heaviest. I work out 4-6x a week and am strong and fit but a size 14 now on the bottom which is getting me down.

My husband goes to the gym a lot like me but is much less driven to binge eat. I have BED which is my issue.

I don't think it is ok or normal. He sounds awful.

ReggaetonLente · 06/04/2025 19:25

I get it OP. I’ve slowly crept up to a 14, the weight was just so hard to shift after baby number 2. I have in fact added to it!

It just seems so hard to lose, the stuff I did pre-30 to lose weight (up my exercise, smaller portions) seems to make no difference now at 34.

Caffeineneedednow · 06/04/2025 19:27

What's your BMI OP?

Clothes size vary massively. If you are obese ( which if your very short you may be) then you may qualify for the jabs.

There is a genetic aspect to obesity but it is not a definitive indicator that you will become obese.
