I’m a 37 year old mum of 2. I used to be a size 8 and now am a 14. It’s got me down. I am quite short and hubby is much taller and lankier so it feels weird when you look at us and I am quite conscious about it. Anyone else in same boat?

Actually, yes, the causes of weigh gain, being overweight and obese, do have a significant genetic component.

Thank god someone said it!!

Also a bit paranoid about my hubby as I’m sure he follows scantily clad women on insta who might be curvy but not fat!

If my DH did this I’d be losing 12 stone instantly!

Yes, I know what morbidly obese means. It's likely you don't. I'm 5'3 and if I were a size 14 I would be morbidly obese. Check out MyBodyGallery.

How on earth do you work that out?!! I’m 5 ft 4 and a size 14 and I’m overweight - not obese, and nowhere near morbidly obese.

Morbid obesity is more like UK clothes size 24. Isn’t MyBodyGallery American? Their clothing sizes are different to UK sizes, a US 14 is more like a UK 18.

If you’re unhappy with your weight, do something about it. Of course it’s not genetic, you and your mum consume too many calories. I often lose and gain 7-10lbs, so well versed with dieting. I just count calories, increase exercise. Doesn’t need to be the gym, walking is great for burning calories. Work out the calorie intake you need (i use TDEE calculator) and knock off 500 calories a day to lose 1lb a week. I use my fitness pal to track calories. Of course it’s hard at first, but when you see the scales going down and feel better in yourself, you stick to it.

I am short, so its very easy for me to gain, as I need less than 1500 calories, and if you have a couple of meals out, few treats, goes on easily. Currently on a diet, hungry, but lost 3lbs so continuinig with it as summer is coming and don’t want another summer fed up with my weight.

Weight gain absolutely has a significant genetic component. What wrong with calling it genetic anyway? OP is still looking for solutions regardless.

At 5'3 i wasnt even morbidly obese in a size 20! My BMI was 35, which is obese but not morbidly so. That is if your BMI is over 40. My BMI is now 22.5 however i did use the WLI as i struggled with my weight my whole life and found losing by my self incredibly difficult.

Oh come on, most people gain weight as they consume too many calories. All my extra weight always goes to my stomach, my mum and Nan were the same. I can’t change that. But how fat my stomach gets is down to how many calories I can consume. The vast majority of people lose weight if they eat less calories than they consume. Genetics may affect how hard or easy it is, or distribution of weight. But doesn’t mean someone can’t lose weight.

Nowhere did I say it means someone can’t lose weight. I said weight gain has a significant genetic component, which it does.

Nobody has said anything about him cheating except you. Twice, now.

This is a bit of an odd thread. Did you want weight loss advice? Or are you after something else?

Offtobuttonmoontovisitmrspoon · 07/04/2025 16:03

I didn’t say he was cheating. I asked what you were going to do about it as it obviously bothers you.
