to think that school meeting dates should NOT be changed because they clash with football

Not school football but some game on the telly. This is a big school meeting to do with extended school/after school activities etc and has been moved from 8pm to 6pm at quite short notice. Apologies to anyone who actually works or has a life and has to organise babysitting/early leaving but you know watching the big game on the telly obviously comes first.

Am gobsmacked!!!!

OP posts:
DrNortherner · 15/05/2008 11:38

Well probably because no on ewould attend the meeting - they'd all be watching footie. so YABU.

cupsoftea · 15/05/2008 11:39

yanbu - does telly rule the world!

zippitippitoes · 15/05/2008 11:39

will be man u i am guessing so a very huge game not at al l surprised they have changed the time no one will want to miss it

UnquietDad · 15/05/2008 11:40

Would they rearrange it for Coronation Street? I don't think so. Seems unreasonable.

zippitippitoes · 15/05/2008 11:41

but its not quite the same is it no point having a meeting that a lot of people wont attend including the staff

dirtylittlepunk · 15/05/2008 11:42

yabu
if its the man u/chelsea match

UnquietDad · 15/05/2008 11:45

It shouldn't just be assumed that people will find football more important than a meeting. Many people wont give a toss, surely. or even be aware that it's on.

fryalot · 15/05/2008 11:45

If they felt that the turnout for the meeting would be very poor, then it makes sense to postpone it.

Little chance of them rearranging the European Cup Final because your school has a meeting at the same time.

Tis a pita, and YAprobablyNBU but it does make sense that they get the maximum attendance possible, and if it was a big storyline in Corrie and they thought their attendance would be low because of it, they probably would rearrange for that as well.

DrNortherner · 15/05/2008 11:51

UD - people do not to go to meetings/weddings/conferences etc because of a big footie match.

I work in event management and it's the bane of our life when there is a footie match on. We've even changed Gala Dinners to buffet in the bar with footie on a big screen otherwise you lose all your delegates!

fryalot · 15/05/2008 11:53

Speaking as one who got married on cup final day, I can testify to the fact that people do not attend things they are supposed to when there is a big footie match on.

best man missed most of the meal as he was in the bar catching up on the game, and lots of people didn't make it till the evening.

UnquietDad · 15/05/2008 11:53

Seriously? I didn't realise it was such a big deal. I mean, I know football is popular and all that, but I don't expect the rest of the world to revolve around it. The last big football match on the BBC got about 10 million viewers. That's only a little more than Coronation Street and Doctor Who. Still leaves 45 million people not watching.

dirtylittlepunk · 15/05/2008 11:55

i wouldnt let them break my waters with dc3 until the northern ireland match was over

Miggsie · 15/05/2008 11:56

So football is a valid reason for postponing a meeting about out of school activities?!!!!!!
Presumeably the assumption is that:
recording devices do not exist
most people watch football on telly rather than do anything else
football is more important than children's activities

How selfish and crap.
Ask them to submit a list of all television events that are considered a viable reason to postpone a meeting at short notice.

DrNortherner · 15/05/2008 11:57

10 million viewers? But don't forget big screens in pubs and bars all over the country - taht will increase the number of actual viewers.

People don't fill pubs and bars watching David Tennant do they?

UnquietDad · 15/05/2008 11:58

But my point is it's still a minority interest. They wouldn't cancel a meeting for Crown Green Bowling.

DrNortherner · 15/05/2008 11:58

The meeting can be postponed, it can happen easily on another date or time.

Football is in real time, recording it is not teh same. you miss teh excitement, teh anticipation and the atmosphere. It is not like taping Corrie and watching it the next day.

fryalot · 15/05/2008 11:59

UD = they would if half the people supposed to be at the meeting were on the Crown Green bowling team

DrNortherner · 15/05/2008 11:59

Wonder if Crown Green Bowling fans would cause trouble on the streets of Manchester?

UnquietDad · 15/05/2008 12:00

I still think people have a right to be pissed off and the school has its priorities wrong. Some people will come, and "well, you didn't come to the meeting" should be the riposte to those who complain they didn't get a say.

fryalot · 15/05/2008 12:01

Dr. Northerner - p'raps not

Gobbledigook · 15/05/2008 12:04

I think YABU.

It's a big game - not a just normal every day game.

Miggsie is clearly not a football fan - recording a big match is not really an option! Ha ha!

dirtylittlepunk · 15/05/2008 12:05

im pmsl @ record the football
omg

Gobbledigook · 15/05/2008 12:05

I don't think it's a minority interest either. Not if you live in Manchester or London (if it's Man Utd vs Chelsea you are on about).

Put it this way - I would not go the meeting if it was on the same night as this. Quite aside from teh fact that the concept of 'extended school' also fills me with horror.

fryalot · 15/05/2008 12:08

(and going back to my wedding day - I did tell everyone that if Man City managed to make it to the cup final, then we'd be changing the wedding date. They didn't, which was a relief that year, as I kinda wanted to get married. One more thing that I can blame Manchester City for - we were divorced a year later )

FAQ · 15/05/2008 12:08

I'm not a football fan by any stretch of the imagination - however I do think YABU. Even I know that it's a HUGE game, and even "non" football fans may well swtich on/go out to the pub to watch it just because it's a big game.

(I'll probably stick in on the TV at home just to see what happens!)
