Are chicken fajitas healthy

On one hand protein and veg. On the other sour cream and cheese.

Trying to eat in a calorie deficit at the moment and just wondering if this is a good dinner choice, particularly if I were to forego the wraps and have some cauliflower rice with them too.

Opinions?

Personally I wouldn’t eat a fajita without a wrap, cheese or sour cream as it would just be chicken, onion and peppers. Hardly a fajita then is it. If you limit yourself and force yourself to have sub standard versions of your favourite food your diet isn’t going to be sustainable for very long. You need to enjoy what you eat.

Have your fajita as you normally would but limit it to one tortilla if you’re trying to lose weight.

Just count the actual calories and then decide. That is the only way to achieve a calorie deficit.

Can you swap the sour cream for Greek yoghurt like skyr?

I think they’re quite healthy really. Veg and protein, bit of fat too which is fine

Skyr is Icelandic not Greek

Instead of wrapping them up in tortillas, use lettuce leaves

One big reason (there are many others) is that they do nothing for your overall health. You may have lost weight but in the medium to long term it’s highly probable that you will put it all back on again, and more. I believe the data says most people will put it on in a year. It also says, looking at large scale studies, that you put on more than you weighed in the first place. They are not sustainable health plans, do nothing for your overall diet (you could have a 1000 calorie diet and fulfill that by having 4 mars bars only every day), do nothing to ensure you have enough fibre (very critical), do nothing for your gut microbiome. I could go on and on.

I don't intend to sustain a calorie deficit once I get to the point where I am done losing weight I will eat the amount of calories that are appropriate to maintain the weight that I'm at. It's already been over a year. And my overall health is vastly improved; I'm being monitored by my doctor.

A tortilla is about 120 calories. Have the tortilla, enjoy your fajitas. Unless you genuinely enjoy lettuce instead of wraps. (I’d have the lettuce and the wrap 😂)

have the tortilla. Don’t deprive yourself so you don’t feel satisfied. It’s easy to find 120 cals to cut somewhere else, have a smaller lunch, cut a snack out or a couple of cups of tea.

i never feel full unless i have balanced carbs.

I just have a fully loaded tortilla with what ever I want in it. I'll just fast through the day, or eat very little. Intimittent fasting has been a lifestyle change for me.

I would most certainly have the tortilla! Was just offering an option to those who wouldn't.

It's a real downer though when you realise you need to do a 5k to burn off the calories from 2 tortillas!

OMG this thread is still giving 😂

curious79 · 26/03/2025 20:15

if I do chicken fajitas I don't do cream or cheese. Just all the veg, salsa, and chick.

Would be even lower calorie as oyster mushroom instead of chicken

mathanxiety · 26/03/2025 20:29

It's a very healthy meal even with the cheese and sour cream.
Whether it will tip you over your daily MFP allowance depends on what else you've consumed that day, the size of the fajita, and how much filling you include.
