Are chicken fajitas healthy

pollypoxx · 24/03/2025 12:56

On one hand protein and veg. On the other sour cream and cheese.

Trying to eat in a calorie deficit at the moment and just wondering if this is a good dinner choice, particularly if I were to forego the wraps and have some cauliflower rice with them too.

Opinions?

It’s a good dinner choice if you can make the calories and portions fit into your calorie deficit. It’s not if you can’t. Fairly straightforward I would have thought.

Dearg · 24/03/2025 12:58

Cauliflower rice is good; ditch the cheese and sour cream and substitute salsa ( I like the green Tomatillo one. )
If you can’t give up both, choose a light sour cream.

Lammveg · 24/03/2025 12:58

Roast the chicken and veg with the Spices in the oven, leave out the cheese and sour cream and have with a few Avocado slices and cauliflower rice?

Aliflowers · 24/03/2025 12:59

i think anything can be as healthy or as non healthy as you make it. You can have low fat cheese, sour cream or Greek yoghurt and low carb or multigrain wraps.

Perculiar · 24/03/2025 12:59

Can you swap the sour cream for Greek yoghurt like skyr?

I think they’re quite healthy really. Veg and protein, bit of fat too which is fine

CointreauVersial · 24/03/2025 12:59

If I were calorie-counting I'd substitute yogurt for the sour cream, and just have a little cheese.

If I were low-carbing (which I usually am) - I'd dispense with the wrap and use iceberg lettuce leaves instead. And load on ALLLLL the sour cream and cheese.

MargaritaPracticallyCan · 24/03/2025 12:59

Could you swap out the sour cream for Greek yoghurt and not add cheese? Maybe more veggies than chicken? You can buy lower carb wraps, or just leave out the wraps.

Iceandfire92 · 24/03/2025 12:59

Make the chicken filling but have it with cauliflower rice and greek yoghurt instead of tortillas 😊.

BallerinaRadio · 24/03/2025 13:00

They're good in a sense that pretty much the whole meal can be substituted with lighter options. You can get lighter cheese, lighter sour cream and a lighter wrap.

The only problem I have is that one is not enough so the calories shoot back up 😂

Tiswa · 24/03/2025 13:00

Yep forgo the sour cream and cheese make/get a decent salsa then it is just chicken and veg and cauliflower rice

MattCauthon · 24/03/2025 13:00

It is healthy. yes.

is it a good option for someone looking for a low calorie meal? Not without a few tweaks. I'd skip the sour cream and limit the cheese. We sometimes use greek yoghurt as I can't be bothered to buy sour cream for one small meal so that could probably work for you as well. Limit the amount of cheese. Up the quantity of peppers/onions etc, and be careful not to use too much oil. When I do these, I often load mine up heavily so I only have one wrap. DH and DS have 2 or 3!

pollypoxx · 24/03/2025 13:00

Absolutely cannot give up the cheese and sour cream completely but could definitely use less.

Try grating your cheese using the very fine grater. I do that sometimes when I want to limit how much cheese I add.

DuckTales1234 · 24/03/2025 13:02

Use low fat cheese and make your sour cream with yogurt + lemon and herbs

steff13 · 24/03/2025 13:03

It's mostly chicken and vegetables. If you're trying to eat in a calorie deficit then you're fine to have cheese and sour cream as long as they fit in the calorie deficit. I have lost 120 lb so far eating in a calorie deficit and I have not avoided cheese or sour cream.

arethereanyleftatall · 24/03/2025 13:03

Depends completely what you put in them surely!

chicken, peppers, onion, tomatoes, lettuce, spices , home made guacamole, wrap - yes, healthy

chicken, cheese, sour cream, processed packet fajitas mix, wrap - no

Allmarbleslost · 24/03/2025 13:03

Well have you worked out how many calories are in it and if it'll fit within your allowance? Your question is a bit baffling to be honest

Sorry I thought since I mentioned veg it would be obvious there’d be peppers and onions. Will bulk up on these.,

But yeah we do use the kits. Surely they are mainly just wraps (which I will skip and have cauliflower rice instead) and seasoning?

None of really like salsa or guacamole.

The sour cream isn't bad at all from a calorie point of view, I use the non light version of it and 20g is plenty and won't make a dint in your daily calories

B1indEye · 24/03/2025 13:06

Health and calories aren't intrinsically linked, this sounds like a simple counting question. Eat what you want within your chosen calorie count

MN is weird about food, life's too short, just eat a sensible amount of sensible food and don't waste headspace over analysing

Sorry what is confusing? I just asked if people considered if it was a healthy meal given that is has a lot of components some of which are healthy and others that are not so much.

Im new to calorie counting but having used MFP to log what I’ve had already I think I will be fine to have some cheese and sour cream.

sleepandcoffee · 24/03/2025 13:08

I tend to have the chicken faijita mix on top of a jacket potato , a sprinkle of cheese , salad and a drizzle of a sauce - I use a garlic and herb sauce from Tesco that is quite low calorie

ItGhoul · 24/03/2025 13:09

If you’re trying to eat in a calorie deficit, you need to work out the exact calorie content of what you’re eating, not just vaguely trying to eat things that are ‘healthy’. A ‘healthy’ meal can easily have more calories than an ‘unhealthy’ one, depending on the quantities you’re eating etc. You need to measure the quantities of what you’re eating for every meal, every day.

Goandygo · 24/03/2025 13:10

I use natural yoghurt mixed with some mint sauce on my chicken fajitas.

arethereanyleftatall · 24/03/2025 13:10

like most things ‘a kit’ is a rip off. It’s wraps (2x the price of buying them separately, and white where you could get seeded). Then the packet mix will contain sugar and a dozen other chemicals you won’t find in your kitchen. Just use cayenne, cumin, paprika.
