AIBU to suggest there should be a law against people commenting on threads when they have not read beyond the OP? There is a very long thread currently running that is a prime example of this. It's a very divisive thread and, without exception, the people on one side are those who have not read the thread, and often even start off by saying "I have to admit I haven't read the whole thread but...." and their responses are mainly knee jerks, while the people on the other side have and their comments tend to be much more considered. If you can't be bothered to find out the facts, you're in no position to comment. You could, in fact, be doing harm.

OP posts:
FidosMum84 · 15/03/2025 12:13

It kinda is when it completely changes the situation and question being asked.
Of course some details emerge when people ask questions and that’s fine. But the one I’m thinking of did a complete u-turn with information that could have been there at the start. If it’s actually true….

WhatNoRaisins · 15/03/2025 12:19

KimberleyClark · 15/03/2025 12:10

If the OP is expected to include everything in her OP and anticipate any question that might be asked of her, that will lead to a very long OP that no one will bother to read.

Maybe they should all have to fill in a really detailed form. That probably wouldn't even be good enough for some folk.

NiceProblems · 15/03/2025 12:26

I use the see all function, can someone give a hint to the controversial thread in question?

MyUmberSeal · 15/03/2025 12:31

OP- AIBU to be annoyed with my MIL wanting to spend so much time with my child. She wants to hold and cuddle my DD every time she comes over, and I just feel it’s too much.

Replies…
YABU sounds like you’ve got a wonderful supportive MIL so embrace it.
YABU I bet you don’t feel the same way when it’s your own Mum.

OP update 20 posts later…
I just find it uncomfortable because I don’t always feel my child is safe as when my MIL babysat last year she left the iron plugged in where my toddler could reach it.

👆 Put that to begin with then. I think many OP’s try and change the direction and narrative of their original post when they are not getting the endorsement they were after to begin with.

100% this. ^

Posters (who start a thread) as you say, people often post drip feeds updates when they are not getting the responses they want. Wink

That's what I'd call a goady drip feed. Someone posting in good faith would be asking about the safety concerns side from the start.

When a thread has hundreds of posts, I have not got the time or patience to read all that.

Agree. People calling it 'arrogant' to not have read through possibly hundreds of responses clearly have WAY more time on their hands than a lot of us!

BogRollBOGOF · 15/03/2025 13:03

Team "See All" here. Or at least read the last page to see how the discussion has evolved.

Cancel the cheque
She's Australian not American 🥒 🍆(although that was a respondant not an OP, but she still had 20 pages of "are you American from people who didn't read past page 1) 😂

Can we also drop kick the Problem Police into the bin. "Is this all you have to worry about" "this is boring". Well don't waste anyone's bloody time by continuing to read it or type a not-so-cutting response 🙄

B1indEye · 15/03/2025 13:09

NotTerfNorCis · 15/03/2025 11:54

If there's a thread with 800 posts, no one is going to sit and read every single post before considering their reply. Especially if they want to rush in and answer the OP.

Who thinks that after 800 posts their contribution based only on the OP is so unique that it hasnt already been said a dozen times already

No one is that insightful

Yes! All these people who 'haven't got time to read 800 posts' but do have time and feel they really must add their contribution to the thread. Who's going to read it? The OP is often long gone by then. What on earth is the point?

If I come across a thread which has already reached 100 posts or so by the time I see it, I rarely bother to comment. What would I have to add by that stage that others haven't already said?

LetMeGoogleThat · 15/03/2025 14:36

Yes, I do generally agree. Especially the ones genuinely asking for support.

But, anyone who caught the sperm donut thread before it was taken down appreciated that loads had not read the full thread and it was hilarious!

JeanGenieJean · 15/03/2025 14:40

SpringIsSpringing25 · 15/03/2025 10:44

My grips are fine, thank you

You're complete arrogance at posting on a thread just so that your opinion is there when you haven't even read the thread or even the OP's posts is incredibly rude.

It's a you problem don't try make it to me problem

How do you feel about people who don't proofread their posts?

Isittimeformynapyet · 15/03/2025 14:52

Oioisavaloy27 · 15/03/2025 12:05

Is that not the ops fault for leaving out important information in her opening post?

You've just responded to a post that explains very clearly why you are being unreasonable.

financialcareerstuff · 15/03/2025 16:14

It’s the OP’s updates that are essential to read. I do believe it’s really poor to put a reply on a serious issue, if you haven’t read the updates.

Two key reasons why OPs can’t necessarily give all information at once. Sometimes they are confused/ gaslit, amid an abusive relationship. It often takes time for them to realise what is actually happening to them and what behaviours are relevant to report. They just come on initially wondering if they are crazy about one specific minor situation. It can be really damaging when people replying dismissively about this one little thing…. Second, new things happen! Really annoying when the OP HAS actually LTB, and you get people constantly coming on giving irrelevant advice based on an original post that is a week old.

At very least, read the OPs posts!

PuppyMonkey · 15/03/2025 16:34

All the people on here who don’t RTFT are big poo poo heads and you can’t deny it. *

*They won’t be reading the rest of this thread so we can say what we like about them.Grin

PeriPeriMam · 15/03/2025 16:39

I have not bothered to read any of this thread but I do fully agree with the OP and also I also believe that Elephants and sperm donuts should only be deployed in specific circumstances.

How do you feel about people who don't proofread their posts?

Oh, I'm killing myself with laughter at your wit.

I have a disability and I use voice to message

It has an irritating habit of not being very good at punctuation or grammar, but I don't have the ability to change what it writes, unless I delete the entire post and try again. And with my accent, I can say the same word 10 times and it will still write the wrong thing.

It may not be brilliant English, but it's not an arrogant load of nonsense where I haven't even bothered my arse to read the OP's posts

No, the same 24/7/365 as you.

Even if people just bothered to read all the OP's posts, it would be a start!! MN couldn't have made that any easier!

Now this post says more about you and not in a good light either. Do you always call people names when they have a different opinion from yourself?

Mymanyellow · 15/03/2025 17:53

Lurkingandlearning · 15/03/2025 10:19

And what about the people who post on completely the wrong thread. I’ll be happily reading about OPs problem with Janice on the group chat for banjo players and all the supportive posts telling OP that Janice had never really been her friend, when some numpty posts a recipe for coq au vin.So thoughtless and careless.

I’m not sure how a law against that would work but they should definitely have their broadband taken away.

I like coq au vin though.

thislifer · 15/03/2025 18:07

No no no, definitely milk before tea if from a pot and the other way round if it’s a teabag. Hope that helps.

Surely it is up to the original poster to put all the info on the first post as opposed to drip feeding? Also not everyone has the time to sit and read every thread the whole way through especially when at work.
