AIBU to suggest there should be a law against people commenting on threads when they have not read beyond the OP? There is a very long thread currently running that is a prime example of this. It's a very divisive thread and, without exception, the people on one side are those who have not read the thread, and often even start off by saying "I have to admit I haven't read the whole thread but...." and their responses are mainly knee jerks, while the people on the other side have and their comments tend to be much more considered. If you can't be bothered to find out the facts, you're in no position to comment. You could, in fact, be doing harm.

OP posts:

You have hit the nail on the head, I think some people have way to much time on their hands.

Sometimes things come out in response to questions and comments

Or the OP can have a lightbulb moment

At least read the OP's updates

JeanGenieJean · 15/03/2025 18:30

SpringIsSpringing25 · 15/03/2025 18:22

That makes no sense.

It does.

Sadcafe · 15/03/2025 10:48

It clearly can be an issue, but some of these threads run to 20+ pages, do people really have time to read every single post before they comment, I’d admit I generally read through the first page or two, then skip to the last page on very long posts so doubtless do miss some pertinent points, does that mean I’m not allowed to comment at all

Yes, if it's not relevant

It's not hard to read the OP's updates and a few of the last posts that might give a better idea of where things are

Nanny0gg · 15/03/2025 18:34

BatchCookBabe · 15/03/2025 11:12

This in spades. Drip feeds do my head in. When the situation is changing over the course of the day (or several days) then of course those are updates, but adding stuff that they didn't add in the first post is drip feeding.

Yet this past year or so, people have started calling them 'updates.' It's not a fecking update, if it's simply something you didn't mention in your first post!

All that said, people really should read all of the OP's posts before responding (especially if the thread has been going for more than 2-3 pages.)

But if a post goes on over days or weeks they often are updates

SpringIsSpringing25 · 15/03/2025 18:59

JeanGenieJean · 15/03/2025 18:30

It does.

No, it doesn't.

I gave you the opportunity to explain yourself. You chose not to take it.

I really don't care, your opinion is of no importance to me. I won't be replying to anything you post.

Isittimeformynapyet · 15/03/2025 19:05

SpringIsSpringing25 · 15/03/2025 17:46

Oh, I'm killing myself with laughter at your wit.

I have a disability and I use voice to message

It has an irritating habit of not being very good at punctuation or grammar, but I don't have the ability to change what it writes, unless I delete the entire post and try again. And with my accent, I can say the same word 10 times and it will still write the wrong thing.

It may not be brilliant English, but it's not an arrogant load of nonsense where I haven't even bothered my arse to read the OP's posts

I agree with your take on the OP @SpringIsSpringing25, but I can't see much wrong with the spag or punctuation in your posts so I'm not sure @JeanGenieJean was even criticising you?

I'm under the impression that they were making a new point about people posting unproofed garbage (which is often beyond awful) but you've jumped to the conclusion that you were being dissed.

I might be wrong. Maybe Jean can clarify.

SpringIsSpringing25 · 15/03/2025 20:02

@Isittimeformynapyet

she was criticising she was criticising that I hadn't proofread my post, I have explained why my posts are not always brilliant with punctuation or grammar. The voice to message can be a bit rubbish and I'm unable to alter what it writes without deleting the entire post and starting again and usually end up with the same nonsense because it struggles!!

As someone that used to be a proofreader I do find it very fucking annoying, but to be honest, it's either accept it and chat on MN or just stop using MN altogether

It had used the wrong form of one of the common words I can't be bothered scrolling back to see what it was but I think it was YOUR instead of YOU'RE something like that anyway.

I do know it's annoying, because I automatically pick up errors like that in posts but there was no need to be so snarky about it!!

Oh. I can't say I noticed your error. It certainly didn't warrant comment. If she was having a dig then she can GFH.

Your speech to text gizmo looks bloody amazing tbf.

I did understand what you said about it the first time explained, so slightly peeved you felt the need to spell that out to me again - no pun intended.

EmpressaurusKitty · 15/03/2025 20:19

I get not reading every post on a long thread. But if someone can only be bothered to read the opening post & isn't even interested enough to see if the OP’s posted any updates, then why bother commenting at all?

DalzielOrNoDalzielAndDontPascoe · 15/03/2025 20:29

It's baffling how many people proclaim a thread 'too long to read' don't realise that, by adding their own comment, they make it even longer.

Who do they expect will read their comment if it's already too long for anybody to read?

Also, for those saying that the OP should include every single possible detail in the very first OP, so there are no further points to add, the OP will then be accused of being a troll or WUM for 'plopping' and then not bothering to come back to their own thread!

The OP would quite often also have to be psychic!

‘This is everything that happened today & this is how things will change next Tuesday….’

Many people clearly don't even bother to read the very first OP.

They just skim the thread title and, like the man in Monty Python's cheese shop, are keen to guess what it might actually be about with no further information.

How else can you explain them asking for the most basic clarifications that were extremely clearly stated in the original post?

BansheeOfTheSouth · 15/03/2025 20:51

Drip, drip, drip is annoying. Especially when the OP gets nasty in replies to original post that they don't like because they have excluded info that completely changes the narrative. Not things that have just happened.

IMO When an OP flounces out on page 2, the thread should be locked so there aren't 5 more pages of posters just arguing with each other. That helps no one.

Doggymummar · 15/03/2025 20:55

I generally just answer the question asked in the subject line. This one doesn't ask a ? Tho so not sure why I'm commenting....

You and I are of one mind @DalzielOrNoDalzielAndDontPascoe - I completely agree with you.

"My DS (6)..."
"How old is your DS?"
Drives me nuts.

My reply to @SpringIsSpringing25 was regarding a side issue - also a common irritant on threads, ironically, so apologies for that.

Yes it was just a question but OP took a quantum leap to the wrong conclusion. She's very uptight. I'll leave her to her gnashing of teeth.

They're not updates when they're drip feeds. If you can't tell the difference I can't help you.

Exactly. As I (and some others have said,) posters often post drip feeds when they're not getting the responses they want. They are not 'updates.' 🙄

It’s the people who don’t even bother to read the OP before commenting that annoy me most.

I do know the difference, thank you anyway but depending on the reason for the post the OP may not remember everything when she first posts

And that still doesn't excuse the people that write post 754 and repeat something that's been said 55 times already

Nanny0gg · 15/03/2025 21:37

NotTerfNorCis · 15/03/2025 11:54

If there's a thread with 800 posts, no one is going to sit and read every single post before considering their reply. Especially if they want to rush in and answer the OP.

Who's already had that response a hundred times already
