To be delighted at quick weight loss in 3 days?

I started a strict diet exercise plan on Wednesday. I’m desperate to lose weight and I’m really pleased to have lost 5lb already. It has been strict and involved going out running in the cold when I don’t want to - it’s strict so not a diet where you ‘feel full all the time’ as people say in some diets.

i really needed the boost of the quick weight loss to motivate me though - so I’ve started this Saturday morning feeling happy ☀️☀️🙌

good luck to everyone on your goals - you’ve got this 💪

Well done but be aware that you weight loss could be water. 5lbs is a lot to lose in such a short space of time. It's better to lost less each week really.
Also if you are runnng in the cold make sure you are not literally running on empty!!

Agix · 15/03/2025 08:20

I say this to support you and not to shit on you, because you need to know this to avoid disappointments and feeling disheartened in the future.

The most of what you've lost is water weight. This can come straight back with hormonal fluctuations, or just eating some carbs. So when the scale goes back upwards, which it will at some point, do not be disheartened.

It takes burning 17,500 calories to lose 5lbs of fat. Look up your TDEE online and how many calories you've eaten, you'll get an idea of your actual fat loss.

Water weight always drops first because of the shock to the body of going on an extreme diet or exercise plan, but eventually it will settle again and water weight can come back.

Also if you can't sustain the extreme diet, it will fail. Ask your doctor if it's healthy to maintain. I managed to maintain my extreme diet and ended up in in the eating disorder clinic diagnosed with anorexia and nearly dead. I now struggle with the ED I developed ongoing. I won't judge you for the doing the same, obviously, but at the same time I don't think we should be glorifying it.

The again with ozempic craze and similar shite, maybe glorifying fast and unhealthy weightloss is all the rage again these days....

Grannywasafanny · 15/03/2025 08:22

That is water weight. Keep going and over the months you’ll reap the rewards.

TakeawayAugust · 15/03/2025 08:23

Thanks everyone for your words of support - they mean a lot

3 day diet?

No it’s going to be much longer term than that

Stop weighing yourself, you only need to do it weekly

Cerialkiller · 15/03/2025 08:30

Hi op. I usually lose about 8lb in the first week with intermittent fasting and keto. Yes it's water weight but it is still weight that was on you. You will likely see quite a difference in your body on day 10-14 if you sustain the diet.

I'm telling you this because week 2 often results in zero weight loss as your body recovers from the sudden drop from the first week. So I'm saying not be disheartened at this point. It's very easy to give up in the first 2-3 weeks.

PurplePastaBake · 15/03/2025 08:32

Well done OP! Yes it may be water weight but it’s clearly given you a boost this weekend to keep going and that’s important in any new diet.

Enjoy your next run knowing that the changes you’re making are working for you 😊

Pompompuri · 15/03/2025 08:33

Its physically impossible to lose 5lbs of fat in 3 days, its water weight. But it shows you are doing the right stuff and if you continue with it you will start to eat into fat reserves!

Well done!

You’re right - but I was finding it tough waking up this morning and needed a psychological boost 🙌

I've experienced this many, many times (yoyo dieter) It is water weight, but I totally get seeing that number on the scales gives you a boost and hopefully encourages you to carry on.

Strawbewwy · 15/03/2025 08:39

Well done OP!! I had a stone to lose last year and followed the fast 800 as I just wanted to focus and get it off. Similar results to you, the stone was off in 3 weeks and I've maintained since (bar a few pounds up at Christmas which I then got back off).

TakeawayAugust · 15/03/2025 08:42

Thanks everyone for your kind comments - I agree with bits of everything you say here ❤️🙌

I think that is personal. Some prefere weekly and some daily. There is research suggesting that people who weigh themselves daily lose more wight. But there are also studies presenting the benefits of weekly weighing.

And it’s worked!!

ok so you now know that this is a water weight loss, but it’s a loss none the less and won’t all be water.. dig in and keep going

you might lose next week, you might not, but KEEP GOING!

the suggestion to see what the TDEE calorie count is for you/your age/activity level etc and keep you calories under that, and it will eventually become a habit and a bit easier

the changes your making will all be beneficial to you and your health and you’ve made a start.

Yep, I weigh daily. My weight can and does fluctuate just by having a salty dinner or a glass of wine. I can easily weigh a pound more. I weigh daily and take a weekly average.

@Agix The again with ozempic craze and similar shite, maybe glorifying fast and unhealthy weightloss is all the rage again these days...

please don’t talk such bollocks when you obviously don’t know the first thing about the subject.

MzHz · 15/03/2025 09:01

@TakeawayAugust Daily/weekly weigh, up to you.

i weigh mostly every day, if i lose, happy days, if i dont, there’s always tomorrow

don’t get hung up on the numbers, focus on the new habits and the numbers will get there.

ConnieHeart · 15/03/2025 09:04

Also see how your clothes feel & if they're any looser, then you know you're going the right way

Happyearlyretirement · 15/03/2025 09:05

Well done on wanting to get healthy. I read that the first 10lbs weight loss can’t be seen as you are losing visceral fat (the fat around your organs) this image always keeps me on a diet as it’s so healthy to loose that fat then go onto change dress size/ shape whatever your goal is. And you’ve inspired me to go out a run this morning, so thanks.

Well done OP for getting on your weight loss journey
That's a great boost for you
Happy running 🏃 x

CherryogDog · 15/03/2025 09:11

I'm like you @TakeawayAugust , the big weight loss is motivational.
I weigh most days when I'm trying to lose weight, for me if I weighed weekly and it fell on one if my "fatter" days I'd be very disheartened, and probably eat my weight in chocolate as what's the point 😄
Nearly all my clothes are stretchy so I can't go by how my clothes feel, that's how I put a stone on over winter!

Andsoitbeganagain · 15/03/2025 09:11

Well done OP! This combined, with a reminder that my holiday is under 100 days, has given me a much needed kick up the ass. I'd had a great week and then crumbled last night and hoovered up 175g of mini eggs and prawn toast. For anyone who does not know how many calories there are in 175g of mini eggs... Don't look.
