That Unison has abandoned women?

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/02/09/trade-union-accused-betraying-women-pushing-trans-agenda/

Unison, one of Britain’s largest trade unions, represents around 1.3 million workers including nurses and midwives. While only women are permitted access to its women’s conference, it has produced a guide saying anyone “identifying as women” is eligible to attend, even if they are “still attending work as a man”.
The motion, which insiders said they believed would likely pass, states that “gender-critical groups and individuals often organise around women-only spaces and the idea that trans people having rights means that women will lose rights.”
It adds “women’s rights are not diminished by trans people having more rights” and calls for literature to be created “to counter the idea that an increase in trans rights would mean a decrease in the rights of others”.
AIBU to think that Unison have lost the plot and are now willfully putting women in danger from their aggressive activist tactics?

Unison will not protect women harassed at work by male colleagues who say they are women. They are prioritising men's sexual feelings over women's material reality.

Is that their official policy? Aren't women protected by EA and I think the government are bringing in new sexual harassment laws.

Here's the motion they are proposing on Thursday.

I don't see how women are protected under this if they have to deal with a Beth Upton situation or as we have seen with the Darlington Nurses.

how odd. they can just say they're a woman for a women's event? Despite living / working life as a man... so basically men can attend?

It's a motion so hasn't been passed. There are lots of unions, so women can vote with their feet. The law remains the same.

From their wording, they don't understand that GC woman have a legal right to their belief. I believe this is coming from women.

Unison's National Women's Conference is to be held in Edinburgh on Thursday.

Unison, one of Britain’s largest trade unions, represents around 1.3 million workers including nurses and midwives. One member quoted in the article says it has "75 per cent female membership."

"While only women are permitted access to its women’s conference, it has produced a guide saying anyone “identifying as women” is eligible to attend, even if they are “still attending work as a man”.

The first motion to be debated "put forward by the union’s Camden branch, asserts that “trans women are women and trans men are men”.

"It goes on to denounce the idea that allowing trans women to access female spaces will mean women lose rights and claims women have “a vested interest in standing alongside our trans comrades”.

The same member quoted above also says

“The other issue here is attempts within Unison to shut down discussions of this issue. Women who are concerned that our rights are under threat are being silenced, forced to whisper in the shadows. It is Orwellian.”

How can anyone be ok with this? It's so bizarre how line after line is trampled.

Male staff member in a Scottish hospital went to management due to a female member of staff objected to that male being in the Womens changing room rather than the Mens changing room

because

▪︎ she left the room when he entered to change
And
▪︎ she waited outside the room to allow him to change before she changed

Per her employer both actions were wrong because the employer decided the male qualified under their definition of Women

I believe most unions take the same line, even those like Unison with a majority of female members. Sickening to see the deep misogyny. Of course if you give some of women’s rights to men, the women lose out. There isn’t some empty ‘middle ground’ that men can take without removing anything from women.

It’s so Orwellian. Not one delegate spoke against. What no no onevolunteered to be publicly lynched, how surprising.

My union, the RMT, which is male-dominated, has a similar stance. I think most do.

WaryCrow · 15/02/2025 06:02

Unions abandoned all working people younger than baby boomers years ago, back when wages became disconnected from the cost of living and requirements for jobs went through the roof. They would agree one thing to your face and then backtrack as soon as employers were in the room.

Women have always been stabbed in the back by men of all kinds.

The combination is not reassuring.

Garlicworth · 15/02/2025 06:24

"Women's rights are not diminished by Trans people having more rights. Rights are not in finite supply."

This is such bullshit 😡 Rights are a balance of responsibilities, not a bottomless bag of sweets.

Workers' rights are diminished by employers having more rights - something you'd expect a union to know instinctively.

Civilian rights are diminished by the military having more rights. Ask anyone living under a dictatorship.

Female people's rights are diminished by males having more rights. This is hardly news.

Changing the noun used for some male people doesn't stop them being male, any more than calling soldiers "citizens" stops them firing at civilians. Calling male people "women" doesn't stop them oppressing female people.

But unions are notoriously resistant to the idea of women's oppression, so they'll be predictably blind to the dangers inherent in their stupid policy.

This is still making me very angry, every time I see it!

Sandie Peggie was told she doesn't have the right to choose who she gets naked with.

Employers up and down the country are ordering nurses, schoolgirls, women at gyms and pools to take their clothes off in front of any male who wants it.

How can they not see what this is?!

What they mean is no one dared speak against, as they’d be drummed out for Wrong Think.

Unions seem to be inherently misogynistic - it’s all about the men for them.

NeelyOHara · 15/02/2025 07:02

I wonder what my dear departed dad (Labour voter and Union member) would be thinking now, absolute horror I should think, at how working men and women have been let down by the unions. How on earth did they get taken over?

How can anyone not see that when men say they are women, women lose our spaces? It is embarrassing, enraging, and ridiculous- and actually, I think (I hope) this particular one has missed its moment. My dc and cohort at school think people claiming to be the other sex or no sex at all are ridiculous. I feel the whole edifice is getting ready to fall because when the real life situations arise- like the Darlington nurses- it’s perfectly clear that there is a clash, and the vast majority of people understand that.

Fairyliz · 15/02/2025 07:14

Your mistake is to believe any unions have ever worked for women; I found this out when I joined Unison 47 years ago.
Any group run by men will be by definition misogynistic.

ColinOfficeTrolley · 15/02/2025 07:15

I work for a union and they're all the fucking same. Extremely toxic, deep rooted sexism and misogyny, nepotism, cover ups, cronyism.

Very 70s culture.

But on a day to day, on the ground running level, I work with some of the most hard working, kind and caring people.

Are we scared to speak out over shit like this - yes we are. We've seen what happens to women who speak out. But once you work for a union, it's very hard to leave due to the terms and conditions.

Igmum · 15/02/2025 07:21

Unions have a long history of misogyny and this is just the latest chapter. Of course no one spoke against, they're not crazy. Fingers crossed that the employment tribunal does what the unions are refusing to - at the moment Fife and DrU seem to be making sure a total pig's ear of their actions that Sandie Peggie must be streets ahead. Next episode in July I guess.

Absolutely this.

The Unions always shill for the boys.

This is not at all surprising.

The Labour Party and the Unions' ideals are often aligned. Where are the government? Why are they not speaking out in favour of women's rights? Oh, I know......

Unions are an odd one. Deeply misogynistic as still in the main run by men and populated by male officers (even those with women in the GS role), but also take on the deeply ‘woke’ (I use that word extremely sparingly and carefully) - probably from their close public sector ties - and no one dares speak out.

I know loads of women who work for Unison. They will not like this motion but no one can speak freely in unions for fear of marking one’s card or being accused of being prejudiced. Ironic as I’ve never seen more sexism or discriminatory behaviour than deep in our largest trade unions

Unison should be ashamed. We can respect the genuinely trans community whilst also protecting women.
