That Unison has abandoned women?

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/02/09/trade-union-accused-betraying-women-pushing-trans-agenda/

Unison, one of Britain’s largest trade unions, represents around 1.3 million workers including nurses and midwives. While only women are permitted access to its women’s conference, it has produced a guide saying anyone “identifying as women” is eligible to attend, even if they are “still attending work as a man”.
The motion, which insiders said they believed would likely pass, states that “gender-critical groups and individuals often organise around women-only spaces and the idea that trans people having rights means that women will lose rights.”
It adds “women’s rights are not diminished by trans people having more rights” and calls for literature to be created “to counter the idea that an increase in trans rights would mean a decrease in the rights of others”.
AIBU to think that Unison have lost the plot and are now willfully putting women in danger from their aggressive activist tactics?

Unison will not protect women harassed at work by male colleagues who say they are women. They are prioritising men's sexual feelings over women's material reality.

Women have always been low down on the priority list for unions.

I left mine a few years ago, zero regret

Even starmer has rolled back on this one though?

Really? Can you evidence this?

What has he said he is going to do about it precisely because the last I heard he said that no amendments to statutory provision regarding the definition of woman is required and without that this nonsense will continue?

We have a situation where men can be legal women by paying £5 to get a certificate to say they are female. How can we keep men who are legal females out of single sex spaces for women?

I work for a union and they're all the fucking same. Extremely toxic, deep rooted sexism and misogyny, nepotism, cover ups, cronyism.

Very 70s culture.

But on a day to day, on the ground running level, I work with some of the most hard working, kind and caring people.

Are we scared to speak out over shit like this - yes we are. We've seen what happens to women who speak out. But once you work for a union, it's very hard to leave due to the terms and conditions.

Unless they offer you an NDA and a shitload of cash. That’s how they get rid of the women who do stand up for what they believe.

Sorry, I don’t mean formal policy wise but in his ability to define a woman and also agree female only spaces should be just that.

Try an anonymous vote Steve.

Exactly this. It's a mistake to take the lack of speakers or votes against as an indicator of unanimous agreement. I take it as an indicator of how terrified people are to challenge TWAW rhetoric.
I've also been to a few union conferences and know how tightly controlled they are. Delegations or political factions like SWP decide in advance how they're voting and delegates have to vote with their group. Often the only way to resist voting against your conscience is to happen to be off getting a coffee or going to the loo during a vote.

WhereAreWeNow · 15/02/2025 07:31

I'd love to see my union hold anonymous votes on this and some other issues. I am sure things would look different if people could vote in secret.

Well just so you know female single sex males will include male people because trans women can obtain a Gender Recognition Certificate for a fiver that makes them legally female.

Whats worse is the law makes it illegal to ask a trans woman whether they have one of these certificates or not. So all trans women can affectively go in women's single sex spaces.

Starmer knows this and doesn't care. His words are therefore meaningless.

spicemaiden · 15/02/2025 07:40

Clearly I need a new Union. Anyone gif any suggestions? I'm not having £20 syphoned off me every month only to be told I must accept a man in our changing rooms

Apologies for typo it should say -

'well just so you know female single sex SPACES will include male people ......'

Unison Steve has just announced "Today UNISON’s Women’s Conference passed a motion stating “That Trans Women are women and Trans men are men, all our LGBT+ comrades must be respected.” Not one delegate spoke against."

Incredible

HaveYouTrumped · 15/02/2025 09:04

I joined a union and I must say I find it shocking what's on their list to promote.

Thanks for bringing this out in the open, if members can't speak out then I would suggest voting with feet and leaving.

@MyPearlCrow how does that help if there's no policy? Isn't it just meaningless words

TheKeatingFive · 15/02/2025 09:07

I'm not in a union (private sector) but the only thing these people are going to listen to are members leaving en mass.

I'm not sure what the alternatives are - does anyone?

RCN if you’re a nurse ? I’m going to look at switching to them from Unison once I check their policies out. And write to Unison to tell them why I’m leaving.
Are the Unison policies nationwide does anyone know? Or different in Scotland/england/wales?

Willoo · 15/02/2025 09:13

Unions are shit anyway. They care about nothing except the monthly subs.

100 percent this is accurate.
i have been told i cannot be protected if I speak out on this, and it would quite literally turn into a witch hunt.

i can’t attend events I would like to show solidarity for, for fear of my job.
i wish I could be as brave as Sandie Peggie.

SALaw · 15/02/2025 09:15

It's absolutely outrageous that Sandy Peggie can't rely on her Union in the circumstances she found herself in.

WandsOut · 15/02/2025 20:53

@Garlicworth, when you say:

Employers up and down the country are ordering nurses, schoolgirls, women at gyms and pools to take their clothes off in front of any male who wants it.

How can they not see what this is?!

  • and how have we gotten to the point where mentioning it gets women hauled through court, ostracised by society, rounded on by other women, jeered at by male celebrities with (fore)skin in the game...

YANBU OP. Not at all. I hope that all female members lapse their membership. Unite do not support or represent women at all. Shame on them.

WandsOut · 15/02/2025 20:56

Unless women leave the unions they won't change.
Did Darlington Nurses set up a union?
What about Free Speech Union?

delvar · 15/02/2025 21:09

Someone needs to set up the GCBWU. Gender Critical Biological Women's Union.

Would that be against the law though?

HaveYouTrumped · 15/02/2025 21:10

Leave because it's not like you have a voice within and or ask for anonymous voting. Incredible that it's not.

WandsOut · 15/02/2025 21:19

Also what's the deal with Union Steve?
I noticed that JKR has commented.

"When you make people too terrified to speak against the motion, you do tend to end up with unanimous agreement. Congratulations on the win, Comrade Stalin."

OP posts:
Mittens67 · 15/02/2025 21:23

Does anybody know which union Sandie Peggie is/was in? I presume RCN but am not sure.
I asked on FWR board but nobody has answered.
I’m a RCN member so would like to hear their stance on this (literal) bollocks.
Trans handmaidens piss me off more than actual blokes in frocks so the women who must have voted for this should be ashamed of themselves.
I expect though that as with other associations this nonsense was proposed and voted through by a few delusional members in positions of power. I doubt that a vote of ALL members of Unison would have passed such a motion.
Middle class twats radicalised at captured universities spreading their pet cause and misinformed others either of the #be kind brigade or just too frightened to swim against the tide having seen how anyone who stands up against gender ideology has been villified and cancelled.

Ladyof2025 · 15/02/2025 21:58

My story may not be strictly relevant but I would like to share it anyway. I put many years of work into my union and after I retired I was invited to be an honorary remember of a Facebook group set up for women members of my former Union.

I was only in the group for about a week when I was suddenly banned by the group owner, who said that she had looked at my Facebook timeline was full of transphobic bigotry.

Out of interest I had a look at her profile, and saw something I had not noticed from the tiny thumbnail picture that I previously seen. This was that the person was quite obviously male. So how about that? This so-called female only Facebook group for union members is actually run by a man in a dress who has the power to eject anybody from the group if they don't believe in his ideological stance. And that is how they do it. That's how they get the so-called unanimous agreement full stop because they have already ejected anybody who might vote the other way.
