To be sick of 'nostalgia'?

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 03/02/2025 16:04

I'm listening to radio one and all day they've been trying to push the 00s onto us with 'noughty words'

They're always doing it and I'm sick of it! Can't we just live in today??

It's like they've run out of ideas

Plus it's awkward to listen to tbh, the presenters don't seem to like eachother, why are there so many?

Actually, I have many complaints about radio 1 now that i think about it 😄😄

I know common sense is to just turn over 😪😄 but its not like it's a tv channel, it's a faff to listen to anything else

Plus general nostalgia seems to be thrust in my face all the bloody time - I don't remember it being this bad when i was a kid but maybe i just wasn't aware

It means you are old enough to graduate to radio 2, in fact I'd go straight to Radio 4 instead, do not pass go, do not collect £200. 😆

Yawningisinfectious · 03/02/2025 16:13

I couldn't tell you about radio 1 because I've not listened to it since I was in my 20s - a long time ago. But I agree with the general point about being sick of nostalgia.

I expect at the root of it is how rubbish life is now and people trying to remember a better time in previous years.

Personally my past wasn't that happy and apart from a few things, mainly to do with my son, I don't want to particularly remember much of it.

I try to live in the present as much as possible.

RuthW · 03/02/2025 16:15

Oh noughties are nearly present day to me!

I must be old.

christmashelp24 · 03/02/2025 16:21

Not the point but how is changing the channel on a radio station any less faff than changing he channel on a TV?

SleepToad · 03/02/2025 16:23

It existed. If you take the 70s, there was a huge amount of nostalgia for the 50s. Bands like shawaddiwaddi(sp), darts and Matchbox having hits in the top 30 (rock and roll has never gone away but rarely troubles the charts). Films like grease and American graffiti. Tv shows like happy days and laverne and Shirley...the 80s we had the ska and mod revivals.

People hit 40 and suddenly pine for their youth. That's why there's greatest hits radio, their 60s version, absolute every decade radio!

On my car i have to press several buttons 😅

Then in my bedroom I have to ask the smart speaker to play a different station and I don't know any others tbh other than heart, kiss, capital and bbc and I don't like the others

I did try listening to Jordan north on capital when he moved but gave up and went back to Greg James, couldn't stand the ads

Ah I didn't know that tbh

It's just so much nostalgia, everywhere i turn. And not only that but its the same nostalgic stuff aswell!

Then it's shoved down my throat on tiktok

I think it's just a consequence of the ageing of the population. People have always got more nostalgic, and more convinced that things were better when they were young, as they age. But we now have a population structure that makes that the majority demographic (there are more over 65s than under 15s in England and Wales now) and so nostalgia is completely dominating the mainstream. I also absolutely hate it, it makes me really embarrassed for the people doing it. But as I head towards 40 I see more and more of my contemporaries embrace it, and start spouting their own twaddle about 'when we were kids we played out' or whatever, so I think I have to accept that I'm in the minority.

Ha ha that made me giggle. I'm still radio 2 when do I get the radio 4 memo!!

TeenToTwenties · 03/02/2025 16:29

Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Same here i didn't enjoy my life growing up - at 33 I'm only just coming into myself!

I even deleted all my photos and screenshots prior to 2019 when I had dd

🤭🤭 I don't think i can let go of radio one and personally think it should be aimed at people in their 30s

😄😄 you are right but I can't let go!

Listening to radio 2 makes me feel old, as much as I love rylan

All calm and dull 😒

They need a radio 1 with current songs aimed at the over 30s 🤭

I can't get enough of it.
I’m a few years older than you but I loved the late 90’s and love anything that takes me back there.

I hate so many things now that I loved about the 90’s.
Music is so shit now, films are just constant remakes of old ones, so many people just doing stuff for likes, social media is toxic and I really hate all this AI shit.

Hard agree with hating stuff now 🥺

Nothing feels new - and even when it does, it the traitors (which isn't even new, it was done before on the radio) it quickly becomes stale 😪

Edit, I wonder though if that's how everyone feels when they get older - tv and media is aimed at the youth for a reason i guess

@thisfilmisboring123 Ah I think we might be the same person! I am unashamedly broody for the 90s when everything was better.

@mumofoneAlonebutokay Have you tried Heart OP? I have them on in the car and they play up to date music and don't seem to talk to their audience like octogenarians.

HPandthelastwish · 03/02/2025 16:44

@thisfilmisboring123 you know that's what our parents were saying in 2000 about music and films from the 70s!

I quite like alot of the newer artists
Olivia Rodrigo reminds me of Avril
Chappelle Roan - Gaga
Sabrina has her own burlesque thing going on a bit like Christina
Taylor is Taylor

I just need a Pink and I can recreate my 00s mix CDs with new songs

👀👀👀 okay i could try heart!

I do hate ads tbh but as long as it's new music aimed at adults (but not as dull as radio 6) i could give it a try!

Don't listen to Radio 1.
Shoddy shows, irritating presenters, revolting music.

HPandthelastwish · 03/02/2025 16:47

I love Heart, I'm not particularly musical and DD is always surprised that I know the words of every song that comes on.

Although it was more entertaining when Eminem came on and my 60 year old mother starting rapping Slim Shady 😂 I wished I'd caught DDs face on camera

@mumofoneAlonebutokay yes the radio is fantastic if a single parent, just having adults chatting in the background is soothing for the soul I think.

I had a gift voucher that needed spending and bought an Alexa at Christmas, I don't regret it at all. I linked my Spotify and have it on all the time.

I started listening to the Cabin Pressure show and that's funny. Or Lucy Worsleys podcasts.

Well they’d be wrong too as the 70’s were crap as well haha!

No, I know. Said the same thing many times just part and parcel of getting older I guess.
I’m only 40 so my kids hopefully have plenty more years of me moaning, ‘in my day…’

Pink is a legend, went to see her years ago! Such a good show.

@AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta
Couldn’t agree more. Everything!
