SOS! We need to take a urine sample to the doctors tomorrow from my 8m old DS. How on earth do I do this?! It’s a tiny tube! Any tips.

Wipe or gauze in the nappy and just squeeze it out into the container.

Dithercats · 31/01/2025 19:08

Let them crawl around and follow with a tupperware.....pour it in the tiny tube after you have caught the wee.
Good luck 👍🏻

UncharteredWaters · 31/01/2025 19:08

Clean Tupperware underneath him and nurse him naked on the sofa!
Often cold air will make him pee and so be ready to catch it.
lots of fluids and patience
good luck

Slinkyminky22 · 31/01/2025 19:09

Can you put a freezer bag or cling film (something soft but plastic) into his nappy and check it very regularly in the hopes he's peed and its sitting on the plastic? Then syringe it up for putting into the tube?
My only idea.

AmateurNoun · 31/01/2025 19:09

Mine often used to pee as soon as I took his nappy off.

Catch it in a clean mug you don't like to use often and then transfer it.

daffodilandtulip · 31/01/2025 19:10

Can you still get the syringes from a pharmacy to extract from nappies?

noroomonbroom10 · 31/01/2025 19:11

Take nappy off, feed with sterile bowl ( wash or with boiling water first)underneath the baby, wait til wees, then pour in tube.

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 31/01/2025 19:11

At 8 months i assume sitting. Get a cheap potty from a supermarket and sit him on it

noroomonbroom10 · 31/01/2025 19:12

Don’t know where the random ‘or’ came from.
But you get the idea.

Babyenroute · 31/01/2025 19:13

Oh my gosh I remember this being a nightmare with my DS! Followed him around and then missed it.
I'm sure you can buy plastic collection things to stick over a penis- I saw them after the challenge and really wished we had been given one

OrangeTeacup · 31/01/2025 19:15

My gosh mumsnet is fab. I’ll be trying all of these early morning tomorrow! The appointment was hard to get so went to make sure we have a sample ready!

At 8 months? Gosh I haven’t even thought about potty training him!

If it's for ?infection should be clean catch so the things that stick round the penis or cotton wool balls in nappy are no good.

Big necked vessel so "sterile" (aka just out of the dishwasher) tupperware is your friend. Sympathies it's a total pain to do.

It is indeed for an infection. Poor bubba. But it might explain why he’s been so unwell 🙏

This post makes me laugh and reminds me of a friend who had to do the same with their 3 month old. They were told that blowing on their willy makes them wee (it did) but it ended up going everywhere as they didn't realise how far the wee trajectory would go!

Let them drink loads of water, then sit them on a potty with something to distract them until they pee.

GildedRage · 31/01/2025 19:19

Ask at the pharmacy for a urine collection bag.

JandamiHash · 31/01/2025 19:22

I used to have to do this when DS was a baby.

Naked on the change mat, make sure room is not too warm, nice and cool and entertain them till they pee and just be whip quick getting the tube over their Willy. They will definitely get some on your chin but once it’s happened once you don’t mind so much the next time 😂 and be glad you don’t have to get one from a girl! Must be so much harder.

😂😂😂! On the chin!

Agree with the tupperware suggestion above.

When I wanted a sample of my cats' urine for the vets, I just took the litter out of her tray, then decanted the urine.

Pixie2015 · 31/01/2025 19:26

The doctors have special bags or pads if necessary - i caught my childs in a plastic bowl

Better than in the mouth, or eye - that’s another thing - don’t open your mouth wide (DH learnt that the hard way) and if you have glasses or goggles wear them (goggles help with the entertainment factor, something about them being relaxed helps it come on)

OneDenimRobin · 31/01/2025 19:27

I was going to say wear a silk blouse while changing them!

RandomButtons · 31/01/2025 19:37

Sit them nuddy on a potty in front of the tv. Worked a treat when mine was that age.

You dont need to potty train him. But if you can sit him on a potty long enough to carch a sample you're good. Less ness and catches it easily. We did it that way when DD was about 16 months and not potty trained. I remember sticking the potty in front of the tv for about 30 minutes and her on it and me next to it to keep her there. 8 months is young but if sitting unaided might be worth a try.
