SOS! We need to take a urine sample to the doctors tomorrow from my 8m old DS. How on earth do I do this?! It’s a tiny tube! Any tips.

I would do nappy off time - lying on a towel/blanket and playing with toys above his head and catch the wee that happens. My kids loved pants off time!

Mrsttcno1 · 31/01/2025 19:44

Worth speaking to GP because we had to do one for my daughter a few months ago, she was 6 months ish and they gave me something which goes in the nappy, absorbs the wee and they take the sample from that x

Teamrofl · 31/01/2025 19:50

As above, if it’s for a possible infection needs to be done into a sterile Tupperware rather than squeezed or syringed out of nappy or bag. Otherwise risk having to do the whole process again as those sort of samples are not reliable at all for culture.

OrangeTeacup · 31/01/2025 19:59

Thank you all. I am currently sterilising a giant Tupperware 😂 ready for the morning. Thank you for the many tips. It seems Tupperware, nappy off and praying!!

Swim nappy! They don’t absorb so can then just tip out.

You can gently (gently!!) massage the bladder in a circular motion to help them go…

“Known as Quick-Wee, and recently published in The BMJ, the method involves gently rubbing the lower abdomen in circular motions with a piece of gauze soaked in cold liquid, to trigger urination.“

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 31/01/2025 20:07

You can buy Newcastle pads which you pop into the nappy and you can draw the urine out of them with a syringe

I've had to do this many many times for work- top tip - if it's taking a while & baby is restless put a cool cloth on their tummy, just above the public bone & it usually makes them pass urine fairly quickly. I've also had success with holding a bowl underneath & putting a toe under a running tap - seems to work. Hope your LO feels better soon.x

Yes this is what I meant! Works 9/10 times within a couple of minutes.

Cupofteaandbiscuits · 31/01/2025 20:09

Once when I was struggling to do this a nurse told me to take his nappy off, use a cold wipe to wipe his bits and it worked every time since!

elastamum · 31/01/2025 20:10

I used to have to do this when mine were babies. Put them on a cold plastic changing mat and take their nappy off. They always peed!

MissSmith80 · 31/01/2025 20:11

Cold, wet cotton wool at the bottom of their tummy/below the belly button.
My son had to have urine tests fairly regularly as a baby and it worked every time.

Dryshampoofordays · 31/01/2025 20:16

8months old is a great age to introduce sitting on a potty a couple of times a day. I tried it after reading Katherine Ryan’s book and it worked so well for my dd!

OrangeTeacup · 01/02/2025 08:11

Tupperware’s ready. Here we go!! Wish me luck!

I used to have to collect urine samples from a baby frequently. The only way I managed it was with the stick on bags from the hospital. It is a nightmare otherwise.

ETA I wouldn’t even bother thinking about sitting a poorly, wriggly 8 month old who doesn’t understand what a potty is on a potty personally.

OrangeTeacup · 31/01/2025 19:16

At 8 months? Gosh I haven’t even thought about potty training him!

I don't think the pp was saying potty trai him just giving a sensible solution to the issue.

Slytherinnnnn · 01/02/2025 09:20

From GOSH - looks like the cotton wool/gauze method is good enough for them.

I don’t personally think it’s the best thing with a. Poorly little one who doesn’t know what a potty is and can’t sit. I don’t want him to associate the potty with this.

Edited

Thank you. Our appt is in 30 min and haven’t managed a sample and he hasn’t even peed! I’m going to pop to the pharmacy and see if they have the stock on bags.

My GP gave me a little bag you stick on the baby down below and it caught the wee for a dip test.

BlackeyedSusan · 01/02/2025 15:13

It's because you want wee...

Now if you didn't want wee and were over an expensive carpet, there would be wee in a nano second after taking off the nappy.

Good luck.
