Someone stole my sandwich!!!

This happened 4 months ago now and I’m still angry about it 🤣.

Following a very rough pregnancy and an extremely long labour I had my DS. I had been an inpatient in hospital for a number of weeks due to complications and was sick of the hospital food. I knew I was going to be kept in for a few days after DS birth. My mum brought me a lovely sandwich from a local deli which I was looking forward to enjoying for an early dinner.

There was a patient fridge on the post natal ward and you had to label your food with your name and the date, which my mum duly did. I felt a bit unwell at dinner time so declined the hospital food, thinking I would have my sandwich later that evening when I was hungry.

DH and my mum left at about 7pm for the night and once I’d fed DS and got him organised I decided to take a trip to the patient fridge to get my sandwich. I was ravenous by this stage, having only had my obligatory tea and toast after having DS that morning.

Well, to my horror I opened the fridge and my sandwich was nowhere to be found. I searched high and low, there wasn’t much else in the fridge. The odd packet of sausage rolls, fruit pota, bottle of juice etc. I couldn’t believe my eyes.

I went to the midwives station and asked if there was another patient fridge, there was not. I asked if the patient fridge had been cleared, it had not. I told the midwife that I had a sandwich in there and she said unfortunately food had been getting taken by other patients/visistors recently!!!!

To this day I’m still so angry and disappointed that someone would steal food from a woman they know has only just given birth!!!!!

The midwife kindly got me a leftover sandwich from lunch time which I was grateful for, but it wasn’t the same as my delicious deli sandwich.

AIBU for thinking you can’t get much lower than stealing food from a woman who has just given birth?!

YABU = get over it, it’s been 4 months
YANBU = this will haunt you forever more

Did Ross get over it in the end?
If it was a deli sandwich, it was theft. That’s an expensive bought sandwich, very mean.

comedycentral · 25/01/2025 20:10

Very mean but sadly unsurprising! Some people do not care and always put their needs above others.

outerspacepotato · 25/01/2025 20:15

I still remember my dinner being stolen from the work fridge 20 years ago. I worked nights and there was no way to get other food.

I feel this one. Especially from a post partum floor. That was mean.

Disgraceful. I would never forget this. When I was six years old I spent several days in hospital after having my tonsils removed. We were given a three course lunch. I had been trained to clear my plate, so I slowly but thoroughly ploughed my way through a bowl of pea soup and a plate of mince and tatties. All fine, but what I was really looking forward to was the bowl of ice cream. When I finally had a clean plate, I asked for my ice cream, only to be told that it was all gone and I should have been quicker. This happened nearly 60 years ago and I have neither forgiven nor forgotten the nurses who deprived me of my ice cream. They also took all the sweets and chocolates brought in for children to the nurses' station. The excuse was that some children had no visitors or gifts so to prevent them feeling left out everything would be shared out equally. Yeah, right. The tiny child patients got no chocolate or sweets.

Did it have a moist maker?

No one is going to condone stealing, it's a shitty thing for someone to do but it has been 4 months, you need to let it go for your own sake.

Someone who steals food from a patient fridge, in a hospital, is unlikely to be lying awake wracked with guilt so do not let them steal your peace too.

Congratulations on your new baby.

Oh that’s terrible!!! I hope you’ve had lots of ice cream since to make up for it

You’re right. They likely didn’t have even a shred of guilt

Ach @Hungrymom - I can understand your annoyance at the time and you were right to be annoyed at the time - I do think so - but 4 months on - I'd just try to leave it 😊🌯🌮 Probably rubbish emojis but meant in deli sandwich solidarity 💐

comedycentral · 25/01/2025 20:23

You need to treat yourself to an amazing deli sandwich 🥪

I've done my best. It will never be enough.

That’s nothing - I’m still furious that when I was six, at the school disco, my cousin took the money that my mum asked her to keep in her bag for me (as I only had pockets), and bought a hot dog, sweets and a drink for herself. Every time I remember, the rage bubbles up to the surface again 😂

Ridingthegravytrain · 25/01/2025 20:25

MY SANDWICHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Astrak · 25/01/2025 20:27

I worked for a large firm (that's now gone out of business) which was made up of predominantly white males. I was senior in role to most of them. We had a collective rest room, with a fridge and tea and coffee making facilities. I put my sandwiches in the fridge and most days, they disappeared. I then kept my sandwiches in my desk drawer and ate them there. I was told that it was "unhygienic ". It didn't take me too long to figure out that a team member had applied for the job and hadn't been chosen. I was sacked on a trumped-up charge of theft, but was also given three months pay-off and a neutral record of service. In hindsight, the firm was failing big time and several staff and managers served prison sentences.

Whydoeseveryonewanttoargue · 25/01/2025 20:28

Okay Ross. Get a serious grip. It’s a sandwich and you have a baby, get a little perspective.

paulyispoorly · 25/01/2025 20:29

Someone stole my sausage roll from the fridge where I worked on a YTS scheme 29 years ago. To add insult to injury they literally left a small bit and put the packet back. I am still not over it .

2025willbemytime · 25/01/2025 20:32

I don't know what is wrong with me as I actually felt quite emotional on reading that. Please tell me your mum got you another one?

MixedBananas · 25/01/2025 20:32

YANBU I understand postpartum hunger and needs are intense and that's is quiet traumatic. I still remember my DH not buy8ng me a burger and chips when I wqs pregnant and craving. I never let him forget it ane after that he made sure not to ignore my requests again. Recent pregnancy in wanted sushi for weeks so he drove me to nearest Japanese reaturant for some. Even after that I can not forget the pain of not having my burger.

BobbyDazzlers · 25/01/2025 20:34

I am now raging on your behalf, OP 😡

Poppymeldrum · 25/01/2025 20:34

I remember when dd (who's now 27) was rushed to hospital at about 8 months old

I was a single parent at the time and had very little money but had scraped enough cash together to buy some teabags and milk

The nurses told me to mark my name on them and leave them in the kitchen where they'd be safe

She finally fell asleep and I wandered through to make a cup of tea

Only to find some twat had stolen the lot

I cried my eyes out and all I got from the same nurses was 'why did you leave them in here?'

Someone also stole a new packet of her nappies, half a packet of wipes and my coat-just what you need when your baby is wired up to machines and could die at any time and you've not got any money to replace any of it and even if you had loads of money, you can't leave your baby to go buy more (my family are worse than useless and refused to help)

Other people are grim

ohyesido · 25/01/2025 20:35

I cannot understand the mindset of someone who would take and eat someone else's sandwich, one even has that person's name on it.

I did actually cry my eyes out later that evening about it 🤣. She did, she brought me another one the next day.

Reading through other posters stories of people stealing their food etc makes me realise there are some really brazen/selfish people out there!

There are some nasty people out there. Yea, it's only a sandwich and perhaps you should treat yourself to one now and then move on, but totally get what you're feeling.

Someone once stole ALL my clothes and ALL DS6' clothes from a locker during a swimming lesson. My fault for forgetting a padlock, but who the fuck steals kids clothes??
