I thought I was having a boy from my first scan, so promised my mum I would name him Joseph (Joe) after my grandad. Well, after my scan it's clear I'm having a girl...would I be unreasonable to call her Jovie or Jovey instead? Is it even a name?

Joetta, Jodie. Both could be shortened to Jo

Everyone will assume she is a witness. Definitely wouldn't use jovey or jovie

My first thoughts too.

Joanne and Joanna aren't female equivalents of Joseph. They're female equivalents of John.

Yes you are right - but I was meaning in the sense of a name that shortens to “Jo” (like Joseph shortens to “Joe”) as that is what the OP was looking for - sorry I wasn’t more specific. But thank you for your invaluable contribution to the conversation. I’m sure you massively helped the OP with her conundrum.

Tillow4ever · 24/01/2025 10:38

Also, please point out WHERE I claimed they were female equivalents of Joeseph? I just re-read my comment and can’t see that claim anywhere. I specifically said names that would allow her to use her Grandfather’s name (because Jo is in there).

BoogieBox · 24/01/2025 11:13

Thank you everyone, I'm going with Jovey for my girl as it has Jo(e) in it. Mum's happy and we are happy.

The End!!

I like Jovey. It’s pretty and different, but not ridiculous.
Most of mumsnet hate non traditional names but I’d pick Jovey over Joanna any day.

Namechangetry · 24/01/2025 11:33

OP had no intention of listening to anyone anyway so not sure what the point of the thread was.

CoastalCalm · 24/01/2025 11:35

jovey is a man’s name on 90 days fiancé

CoastalCalm · 24/01/2025 11:37

Jovie is the girls name

caramac04 · 27/01/2025 09:50

@CoastalCalm you are correct from what I’ve seen of this name but I find it odd that with the name Lesley, the y is feminine and ie is masculine.

ChristmasFluff · 27/01/2025 12:21

Aaaaaw, I was hoping for Joey! OP, give Nick Drake's song 'Joey' a listen and see if you don't change your mind!

Jovey/ie is one of those names that will doom your child to a lifetime of mishearing and 'how do you spell that? ....Are you sure'

midlifeattheoasis · 27/01/2025 14:29

Jovey is an awful name. It doesn't even sound like a real name
