I thought I was having a boy from my first scan, so promised my mum I would name him Joseph (Joe) after my grandad. Well, after my scan it's clear I'm having a girl...would I be unreasonable to call her Jovie or Jovey instead? Is it even a name?

I would wonder if you're a Bon Jovi super fan

MyrtleLion · 23/01/2025 23:10

Did your granddad have a middle name you could use?

Azandme · 23/01/2025 23:17

Various international feminine versions of Joseph

Josefa- Spanish

Italian - Giuseppa

English - Posy/Posie

Croatia - Finka/Jozica

French - Josiane

Zitouna · 23/01/2025 23:56

Posy?

NigelHarmansNewWife · 24/01/2025 00:08

I don't get the connection of Jovie to Joseph. It makes me think of "jovial" and what if she's not?

Dontknowwhattodowithmyselfnow · 24/01/2025 00:23

I immediately got Jovie from Elf, when you said. Love the name, love the film! (but Jovey is also lovely and could push the pronunciation as one could pronounce Jovie as Jaw Vey, rather than Joh Vey)... I also love Joey

Moveoverdarlin · 24/01/2025 00:32

Of course you have a choice! I’ve never understood the pressure to choose a name just because it’s a relative’s name. Great if you like the name but it doesn’t mean you love them any less if you don’t.

Why shoehorn a name like Jovi into the name Joseph? It’s not really logical. It’s like calling a baby girl Margret because her grandad was called Martin.

I would assume you were a huge Bon Jovi fan.

What about Jojo? Or Josie. I don’t like either, just throwing them out there.

healthybychristmas · 24/01/2025 00:48

I never understand this idea of honouring someone by giving them the name that their own parents chose for them. Just give your child a name that you like. You can talk to your child about your grandad, you don't have to think of names that vaguely resemble his.

RedLightsStopSigns · 24/01/2025 00:58

Giovanna could be Jovie, maybe?

paranoiaofpufflings · 24/01/2025 01:00

I had a dog named Jovie! I love the name obviously, I named her. But I wouldn't consider it a female version of Joseph or in any way connected to Joseph so I don't see how it fits the brief at all. If you aren't using Joseph itself (because, girl), you may as well use any other name. Using a different name doesn't mean you loved your grandad any less.

Lemondrizzlesquash7 · 24/01/2025 01:06

I love Joella

Thepossibility · 24/01/2025 05:20

I like Jovie, it sounds prettier than Josephine to me. Joni is ok but not Jovie? People are weird about names on here. All names are a made up collection of letters, it's just that some have been used by thousands more people than others so that makes them more acceptable for some reason? That's so weird to me. The world is so multicultural now that dismissing unusual names feels old fashioned and small minded to me.

Marcipix · 24/01/2025 05:32

I’m sorry but I immediately thought of the witnesses. That’s their nickname.

I like Posy as a diminutive of Josephine. It’s unusual and very pretty, and there’s a famous one in a classic children’s book. Ballet Shoes.

Pigsinblankets13 · 24/01/2025 06:07

Jovie is cute and modern
Josephine etc sound a bit frumpy to me tbh!

Enko · 24/01/2025 06:58

I quite like Jovie. Less keen on Jovi as it makes me think Bon Jovi I would get over that though.

If you already have one child with an unusual name I think Jovir is just fine.

Marcipix · 24/01/2025 08:32

Josefa is nice

ClydeBank · 24/01/2025 08:40

Oui, c’est bon jovi

FabuIous · 24/01/2025 08:44

PinkSkiesAtNight · 23/01/2025 15:44

Jovey - not.

But what about Joey? As Little Women? I love that for a girl's name.

It’s Jo, isn’t it? Short for Josephine.

Hardlyworking · 24/01/2025 09:30

Housebuy1 · 23/01/2025 17:41

Yes…and all Cathy’s are catholic….🙄

Yes, but Cathy is an actual name and I don't believe it's used as a disparaging way of saying catholic. Jovie on the other hand....

PiastriThePastry · 24/01/2025 09:34

I don’t particularly like the name Jovi or Jovie but both are better than Jovey imo. Jolie is also okay!
I have to admit I find your stance rather strange. It’s like you don’t care much about the name beyond it being vaguely similar to Joseph because you ‘promised’ your mum. This is a human being you’re naming, I find it so odd that you’re just hung up on how your mum may or may not feel!

xyz111 · 24/01/2025 09:37

I would name her a name that you want. It's not your fault you're not having a boy!

Notanewbee · 24/01/2025 09:48

But you were going to use Joseph, which isn't an unusual name so I assume wouldn't match your DS1?

WitcheryDivine · 24/01/2025 09:57

I know a girl Joey and it’s quite a fun and cool name on a woman I think. Jovie also fine tbh.

Nina1013 · 24/01/2025 10:04

BoogieBox · 23/01/2025 09:04

My first son has an unusual name, so want to stick with an unusual name this time around. Josephine doesn't go well

But you were going to call the baby Joe/Joseph if it was a boy? That’s definitely not an unusual name….

You can call your baby what you want though!

ItGhoul · 24/01/2025 10:07

Tillow4ever · 23/01/2025 08:21

You could use those - they are better than some names these days! Whether or not a word is a name depends on whether it's used as a name!

If you want established names that allow you to use your Grandad's name:

Jo
Joanne
Joanna
Josephine
Josie

If you aren't sure for a first name, it could always be her middle name.

Congratulations and wishing you a smooth rest of your pregnancy

Joanne and Joanna aren't female equivalents of Joseph. They're female equivalents of John.
