Can someone recommend me a car for 6k or less?

Posting here as we don't have the car topic anymore.

I want to sell my current car (Audi A5). The car is worth roughly 6-7k and I plan to use the money to pay for my next car. I don't want to get finance or a loan.

I do like the MINIs but not sure if they're reliable, anyone know? Or is there a particular brand/model you'd recommend?

How many typically will use car
Family car or for 2 people
City or country or motorway driving
Short or long trips predominantly
Etc

Have a look on autotrader in your area for an idea of what's available. Most Minis in that price range seem to be around 10-12 years old and pushing 100k miles. I think at that age and mileage any car is going to start needing work done just due to wear and tear of parts.

I currently work from home so mileage is minimal right now although that could change if I move jobs in the future.

Just me, no family/kids.

Mainly country roads & dual carriageway (nearest motorway is an hour away). Short trips.

What do you really want out of a car ?

As you have probably figured out by now, Audis are not cheap to run.

6K is a dangerzone for buying a car, because it is a fair amount of cash. But you might end up with something than needs a lot of expensive repairs quickly.

Minis you are paying a fair premium for the fashion statement they make.

If you want something that is low risk and cheap you are probably better off picking something from the more common less fashionable cars like say a Toyota (more expensive but more reliable) or a Ford or Vauxhall (less expensive but less reliable).

For 6K I would be avoiding luxury stuff like old mercs, BMW/minis and audis and stick to stuff that if it did go horriblly wrong the repair costs would not be astronomical (eg manual rather than automatic).

As per my user name, I bloody love my little Smart ForTwo convertible. It’s perfect for me as I’m also in my own, cheap to run and insure and pretty reliable. I use mine around town which it’s great for but can also hold its own on dual carriageways and the motorway. Mine is 16 years old with 23k on the clock and has only failed one MOT in that time. Parts can be a bit expensive but not too horrendous.

You'll get a low mileage corsa or fiesta for that price, or Peugot 208s seem to feature quite heavily in this list. Also Fiat 500s if you only want something small.

I think I’d go for a Toyota Aygo.

Toyota Yaris/Corolla, indestructible things family has run them to 130/180k without major issue. I've got a 2009 Aygo on the drive for local stuff and it's on 135k, so far one clutch, one water pump and a fanbelt have been needed outside of service stuff. Tolerant of iffy servicing so make sure they have been looked after.

Lexus are even better but I'd not recommend one under 6k...

But we have a 23 year old Volvo V70 that we bought new. Still going strong with 200000 miles on the clock and we have not faced any major repair bills other than annual servicing.

We had a Kia Ceed, it was very reliable, We bought it when it was 3yr old had it for about 5 years. Original battery and exhaust system.

My DD's have Fiat 500's. Both 2011 plates, both low mileage, sub 30k. Both bought for 4.5k. Only needed new tires and suspension bushes, but that's because they went down potholes!!

I've got a 2015 Mini Cooper sub £50k mileage, zero spends so far. But it would cost you about £8K.

My Hyundai Getz was great. 2007 plate and has only just died. Perfect for zipping around and never any huge expense at MOTs.

I’d get a Honda Jazz. Really reliable and often found with reasonably low mileage for the age. Huge amount of space for the size. I bloody loved mine but went with a different brand when I finally sold it after 12 years only to regret not just getting another Jazz.

For under 6k, reliable picks include Toyota Yaris, Honda Jazz, or VW Polo — all solid daily drivers. MINIs are stylish but often less reliable and more expensive to repair long term. Always check mileage, service history, and past ownership before committing. Since you’re moving from an Audi A5, keep handy the Audi service manuals for reference on maintenance standards. This will help you judge how well potential new cars have been cared for.

I got my Toyota Aygo with low mileage for about £7k in 2019. So might be able to get one for £6k ish now . Great little car and no issues with it on country roads which I use regularly or dual carriage ways.

Fiesta (but not Eco). Corsa. Honda Jazz. Toyota.

Avoid the Mini (appeals to the type who has bought it because they like how it looks), Audi A2 (same reason). Expensive to repair, new tyres etc.

Look for FSH and that the time/milage replacement checks have been done. Check that the MoT advisories have been seen to.
Don't worry too much about mileage - avoid too low or too high for the age.

Do not buy a low mileage diesel. They don't like short journeys.

Dacia Sandero - I’ve had a couple, they’re really good, they’re owned by Renault but a lot cheaper.

Yes I’d go Honda or Toyota. I have a 2013 civic on 100k that has had zero problems and still drives like new. You’ll get one of that model with less miles on it for 6k. You’ll get a jazz with even less miles on it for that.

A close friend of mine raves about her Skoda. Says they come in cheap because they come from Korea or something.

@zingally , Skoda is part of the VW Group. It was originally Czechoslovakian.

How can we give any kind advice when you have not said what type of car you want or what sort of driving you do?

The man im currently dating is a mechanic...he says Toyota or Kia are the most reliable...he says this is why Kia give a 7 year warranty on their cars because they make bloody good cars.

If you don’t need the space, I’d look at the Aygo. I have the AygoX and absolutely love it and I know a few people with older models of the original Aygo and they love them too!

Boot space is very limited tho, if that bothers you
