Approach to drinking at Christmas

Genuinely interested in how people approach drinking at Christmas
do lots of you drink all day on Christmas and Boxing Day, starting early on in the morning / just before lunch?
posting on AIBU for traffic
YABU - you start drinking early
YANBU - you don’t see it as
an opportunity to drink all day

Not a big drinker. Had some Buck’s Fizz at home with DH on Christmas Eve. Went to relatives for Christmas Day - I had a couple of glasses of wine with dinner and a Baileys after, DH was on soft drinks as he was driving us home.

I never drink all day and think it’s a bit sad that some people feel the need to.

Haven't had a single alcoholic drink this season - many nice drinks or mocktails though. The only alcohol was in a lovely trifle 😂

I wouldn't see it as an excuse to drink all day, it's not really an alcohol focused celebration to me.

I've drank nothing so far, I wanted to enjoy this time with my child without being hungover.

We’re generally having a Bucks Fizz by 10.30am on Christmas and Boxing Day.

I don’t view the days as “an opportunity to drink all day” though. The Bucks Fizz is just a rare treat.

I feel like there’s a backstory to your question…

I'm a bit of both, I start drinking before lunch, when I'm cooking but generally switch to soft drinks when lunch is finished.

None this year. (Little kids and tipsy/hangovers don't go down well)
But in the past a glass of bubbly with Xmas dinner (around 1pm) then a glass of bubbly in the evening but it ends up 2 glasses as I pop fizzy water in with it. (I am an unbelievable lightweight)

I drank on Xmas Eve evening and from about 10 on Xmas Day, started with Bucks Fizz then champagne. Never felt “drunk”. Got up on Boxing Day and went to the gym, couple of G&Ts last night and one this evening.

We drink leisurely throughout Christmas Day but nobody gets ‘drunk’. Just a merry day we all enjoy together. It’s not a regular occurrence tho, I’d say Christmas Day is the only day it’s acceptable to drink in the morning. I wouldn’t like it if folk were steaming tho.

champagne with breakfast -probably around 11.30
couple of glasses of wine with meal at around 6 6r 7/0

boxing day - mulled wine at around 4pm with mince pies
glass of wine with dinner - i think a glass of champagne first, to finish the bottle
had cheeses in the evening, but didn't open any port.

I was on driving duty so small glass of wine with lunch on Christmas day as a toast and then nothing till everyone was dropped off home and kids in bed.

I don't drink during the day as a rule (young kids and I'm usually the driver if we're out) but will have a drink most evenings over the Christmas period.

A glass of red with lunch and a sherry to go with the dessert on both Christmas Day and Boxing Day. More than that and I would fall asleep and miss all the fun 🤭

The approach is, that it's acceptable to have any drink you fancy whenever you want to have it! Guests staying here have been offered any drink they want at any time of day. Likewise with food - if you only want to eat chocolate, cheese and pigs in blankets, that's totally fine!
Also, help yourself and don't feel the need to ask. The food and drink is there to be enjoyed!

Your poll isn’t helpful. I do start with an early drink but I don’t see it as an opportunity to drink all day. That implies looking for an opportunity. I don’t. Just usually do so on Christmas Day (less so Boxing Day).

Spent Christmas with family at a UK holiday type place. My sister decided to make me and her martinis at 11am on Christmas day. Similar on boxing day we were drinking mimosas by 1pm.

I’m a drinker. Xmas day morning we had Buck’s Fizz. Then Prosecco during the day and evening.
Boxing Day started with Prosecco about 1. Drank several during the day followed by a glass of wine.
Have drunk a bottle of wine tonight.

Christmas Day - wine or champagne with/before dinner.

Boxing Day and the odd day in the Christmas period, wine after about 6pm with cheese, pate and crackers.

After cooking Christmas Dinner, I don't cook again til about the 30th Grin

I didn’t drink all year so not really in the habit of drinking. I did have Prosecco over Christmas brunch but then that was me for rest of day until port with cheese in late evening. I think Christmas is a time to indulge in what you fancy food / drink wise. Although just because you have a drink first thing doesn’t mean you’re drinking all day.

I will 'drink all day' in that a few drinks will be spread over the day if DH is driving. I will drink water, hot drinks and soft drinks too.

Do you have a problem with drinking excessively? I’ve had alcohol over Christmas and haven’t been hungover. I do understand that for some people they can’t drink moderately….it’s an all or nothing thing for them.

I drink rarely but I love Buck’s Fizz. Only have it on Christmas Day and I usually have a bottle open by ten in the morning. I drink it all day then have a baileys in the evening.

If we are going to my Mum's then nothing as I usually drive.
This year we stayed home and we had a glass of bucks fizz with breakfasts and another glass with lunch.

A couple of drinks with breakfast on Christmas day. Another couple with lunch and then a few more during the rest of the day. No one was drunk. Boxing day i had a drink at lunchtime and then a couple more in the evening. Back to normal now, which is a couple of drinks once or twice a week.

I normally drink very little - a glass of something maybe once every couple of months, however, having the house full at Christmas is a stress and therefore my drinking started on Christmas Day whilst preparing dinner and has carried on including this evening. There is no alcohol left in the house but safe to say it helped me forget about adult children arguing and the stress of other relatives!
