Genuinely interested in how people approach drinking at Christmas
do lots of you drink all day on Christmas and Boxing Day, starting early on in the morning / just before lunch?
posting on AIBU for traffic
YABU - you start drinking early
YANBU - you don’t see it as
an opportunity to drink all day

Christmas eve - arrived at parents at around 1400 and had a glass of wine while prepping dinner. Then wine with dinner then a couple of whiskey and ginger.

Christmas day - after early afternoon walk i had a beer. Couple of glasses with dinner. And a couple of ports.

Didnt drink boxing day cause i was driving.
Think for me drinking can start early but not consistantly. 🤔

Spaceid · 27/12/2024 22:39

Both! I don’t need an excuse to drink all day. I’m an adult and can drink or not drink if I so choose.

MayaPinion · 27/12/2024 22:40

Glass of champagne before lunch, and another one watching the Death in Paradise Christmas special on catch up in the evening.

RaininSummer · 27/12/2024 22:45

Not had much to drink at all. I made a small cocktail with amaretto Christmas morning then had a glass of red with dinner. I had a Bailey's coffee in the evening. Didn't drink anything on boxing day and had another wine tonight. That's me done really. Just don't fancy it much these days.

HorrorFan81 · 27/12/2024 22:45

Christmas Eve I had a couple of G&Ts, some wine and a Baileys.

Christmas Day we have bucks fizz whilst opening presents and with the starters which we have around 12. Soft drinks for a couple of hours then wine with dinner and during the evening. Take it slow and eat lots so don't get drunk, just a nice buzz.

Don't tend to drink on boxing day

I like a drink and it feels like a fun treat to drink in the morning - tend to do it on Christmas Day and at the airport if taking an early morning flight- love a breakfast Bloody Mary

Tuppy2 · 27/12/2024 22:50

We start drinking with breakfast on Xmas Day and carry on till we go to bed. Boxing Day we usually start at lunch time then have a break until the evening. I can cope with the booze....it's the pork products that are giving me a headache!

Fundays12 · 27/12/2024 22:51

On Christmas eve I had 2 large Bailey's with loads of ice then on Christmas day has champagne with DH about 12.30 when the kids were settled happily playing with there new toys. We had a few champagnes over the day including with dinner. I haven't had any alcohol since as I didn't fancy it. I got up early to go to the gym this morning and am hill walking early tomorrow morning.

OneBadKitty · 27/12/2024 22:55

I generally have my first drink when my guests arrive at about 1pm is- then I have a couple of glasses of wine with my meal, then a coffee and a little break before having a couple of gin and tonics in the evening and maybe a baileys or sherry as nightcap before bed. Boxing day will usuaually involve a long walk which terminates in the local for a pint and then a glass or two of wine at home in the evening.

TooMuchDontCare · 27/12/2024 22:58

I haven't been drinking much this year as I've lost over 2 stones.

Christmas eve I had 3 glasses of very nice champagne once we had the jobs done & I sat down & i have to say i thoroughly enjoyed them. I watched The Holiday on Netflix & finally felt vaguely Christmassy.

Christmas day we visited family friends, had a glass of prosecco there & then a couple more back in my parents house

Didn't drink with dinner which is unusual for me but i was tired by that stage

After dinner I had a baileys with ice

Didn't drink yesterday

Tonight I've had a glass of red & 2 small glasses of champagne. But I also had a massive cheese board.

Tomorrow we're at dinner with friends & there will def be lots of drinks.

After that I'll take a break until nyd when dh & I are away on.a trip till 3rd & I'll 100% have lots of nice wine & cocktails then.

And after that I'll be off drink again to get back onto the weight loss bandwagon till a dinner first weekend of Feb

FelizNavidadAmiga · 27/12/2024 22:59

We always have a skinfull on Christmas day. We start of with a bottle of Champagne with breakfast, cocktails before lunch, wine with dinner, liqueurs with dessert and a sherry to toast the King. We then have a nap before hitting the Tequila in the evening. Funny as we don't drink for the rest of the year!

MrsSkylerWhite · 27/12/2024 23:00

Love gin and tonic, fizz, red wine. Couldn’t drink in the morning, think it would make me feel ill. 6 is generally my on button at Christmas.

mindutopia · 27/12/2024 23:03

I don’t drink anymore because I’m sober, but when I did, Christmas Day drinks definitely started around 10:30/11am when I started food prep, which was not that dissimilar to any day we were having a roast for lunch. I’d continue drinking until bedtime, maybe with a walk or a nap or a coffee in there somewhere.

Being a recovering alcoholic, I don’t think my drinking was a whole lot different from how a lot of people (who think they don’t have a problem with alcohol) drink on Christmas or other days. I just did it probably more often than most people.

MintyFreshest · 27/12/2024 23:21

I drank too much. Bucks Fizz from about 10am and then beer and wine throughout the day. I was drunk, but I hide it well and managed to cook a nice dinner. I did it because I have complicated relatives and find it hard having them all here. It's a coping mechanism.

I'm not a big drinker at all and won't drink again now until New Year's Eve (but only a couple).

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 27/12/2024 23:34

My parents would tell me I 'had' to have a drink when I first got up (once I was 14/15 years old). My dad first offered me an alcoholic drink at 11, then when I didn't like it said it was his mission to find an alcoholic drink I liked. They used it as an excuse to start drinking early and for years I followed their example.

Second year sober this Christmas and it's so much more pleasant. I don't miss the hangovers or shakes and I'm much more present for the kids, and feel I'm setting a much healthier example.

TeaInTheBath · 27/12/2024 23:40

A wise old Doctor once said to my Mum, it’s not the amount you drink between Christmas Day and New Years Day that does the damage, it’s the amount you drink between New Years Day and Christmas Day.

FuckItItsFine · 27/12/2024 23:44

I’m not much of a drinker, I prefer to vape weed occasionally.

But I had a couple of Amarettos on Christmas Day and then a 0.5% alcohol G&T which was lovely. I’ve always had Champagne in the morning when with my parents but I didn’t miss that. I think I’m too sensitive to alcohol so always worried about headaches etc. (Although I binge-drank regularly between the ages of 14-25.)

HeddaGarbled · 27/12/2024 23:48

I drink more than I would normally but I don’t start early in the morning and drink all day.

RM2013 · 27/12/2024 23:49

It depends what plans are. I drove to family party Xmas eve but then didn’t bother having a drink when we got home. Christmas Day had a couple of drinks whilst cooking lunch but then stayed on soft drinks after as felt too bloated! Boxing Day I drove so just had half a glass of champagne then soft drinks. Today we were at home but just had a couple of glasses of baileys.
usually I just have a couple of drinks on a Friday night

Wow poor you that's a horrible thing to do to a child. I can't even stand adults pushing me to drink alcohol but can never imagine doing it to a child. I have a nearly 13 year old and he was asking inquisitive questions about alcohol this year but I wouldn't even consider letting try it let alone alone encouraging him. We done on stopping alcohol.

Nc546888 · 28/12/2024 07:34

I loathe excessive drinking at Xmas. I might have a glass of fizz before lunch and then one glass of red with lunch.

perhaps a baileys in the evening and I’m done. Might not drink on Boxing Day

wildfellhall · 28/12/2024 07:37

Drinking only after 6pm. Wine over food prep with relatives & then two small glasses of port and then decaff coffee. Never felt pi**ed only warm and happy.

wildfellhall · 28/12/2024 07:39

Sorry that Xmas day.
Have a relative who tends to be incoherent with wine by 8 pm, everyone is quietly embarrassed by it but adults are free to choose

derbiee · 28/12/2024 07:56

Somegimexbucls fizz in the morning I never drink at lunch but have a glass of something in the evening

ApolloandDaphne · 28/12/2024 09:31

Meh. We started around noon with fizz on Christmas Day moved onto wine for dinner around three, continued with wine until the evening then had some Baileys. No one was drunk or hungover. On Boxing day more guests arrived so we started on fizz at 4 and moved onto wine for dinner and other assorted drinks moving onto playing games. It was a fun late night. DD2 was a little hungover next day but she isn't really a big drinker and slightly over indulged. We don't drink like that all the time but we really enjoyed it for that few days. No one was harmed. No children were present.

Lolypoly14 · 28/12/2024 09:56

I haven’t drunk much alcohol at all this Christmas.

The older I get, the worse I feel after drinking even small amounts of alcohol. I can’t sleep, and I feel tired and grotty the next day. I’m not the worlds biggest drinker usually, but can be a bit of a binge drinker in that I won’t drink for months, then go out and before I know it I’m on the shots. I then spend the next 3 days getting over it.

I had a couple of glasses of mulled wine on Monday night in the pub with friends, couple of Baileys on Christmas Eve with DH while wrapping the last of the presents and a glass of Buck’s Fizz on Christmas morning. Nothing since - DH has been really ill so we ended up cancelling plans and haven’t really been out
