How long to you walk your dogs? How many times a day?

OP posts:
Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 24/11/2024 18:53

My ten year old Patterdale bitch gets an hour and a half running with me every morning, about four and a half or five miles. Then another half hour later in the day when we walk a couple of miles, and several ten minute potters around the village, about every two hours through the day.

DontReallyCareBear · 24/11/2024 18:55

45 minutes round the woods every morning, then several mooches round the farm where we live throughout the day, and at least one frisbee session at some point.

applestewing · 24/11/2024 18:55

Once a day
Anything from 30mins to 2 hours

applestewing · 24/11/2024 18:56

Why are you asking? You’re going to get such a variation of answers?

Furrydogmum · 24/11/2024 18:58

My 8mth BC x Husky gets 1 hr am and pm, my 18mth Dachshund gets 20 mins at least 3x a day and my 5yr old Perro de presa Canario gets at least an hour a day. We enjoy walking in our house, and I pretty much exist for the satisfaction of my furbies 😬

NoSquirrels · 24/11/2024 19:01

Are you trying to figure out if a dog fits into your life? Routines will differ depending on the needs of the breed and the owner’s situation too.

Fireworknight · 24/11/2024 19:01

2 year old lab - two walks, usually around 45-60 minutes each, plus some mental stimulation at lunchtime,

wendywoopywoo222 · 24/11/2024 19:05

Four year old bichon cross, she gets one walk a day. Between 20 minutes round the block if the weathers awful to 2 to 3 hour off lead beach or forest walks if we have time and the weathers nice.

She is easy to
Please.

Olliequick · 24/11/2024 19:07

Small dogs here and about 30 mins a day, maybe more.

PleaseDontBeMean · 24/11/2024 19:08

We have two dogs. One requires at least one x 90 minute walk or two x 1 hour long walks per day. He also needs to RUN miles off lead chasing pheasant or whatever he can sniff out. He hates being on the lead. In the summer we went hiking and he walked for hours every day and was in his element!

Our other dog is happy to come on whatever walks we offer but really, she only needs a few minutes on the lead round the block! She's v easy! Happy for long walks and likes to be off lead, but equally content with just a few minutes on the lead each day.

Why do you want to know OP? Thinking of getting a dog?

BelgianBiscuit · 24/11/2024 19:17

Labrador and Belgian malinois, both 60min off lead morning walk, a mixture of woods, fields and bridleways each day. Swimming in the summer along 2 routes providing there's no killer swans.

Mali is out in the work yard all day getting involved and lab naps.

30min lead walk late afternoon, not all to heel but we do chuck some obedience in.

mondaytosunday · 24/11/2024 19:22

40 min in the morning and 20 min in the evening plus access to outside all day. Though confess when it's very rainy we go for much shorter walks and may even skip it. Dog is 13.

Catza · 24/11/2024 19:31

30-45 min once a day plus access to the garden on demand. Apparently, out breed needs 2h of vigorous exercise and stimulation. She obviously missed the memo because she will just lie down and refuse to move after 60 minutes and it you try to give her training or stimulating games, she walks away.

Hendalle · 24/11/2024 19:32

Greyhound (a higher energy greyhound I should add), she has 30-45min in the morning, then another 2 walks in the day of around 20min-ish (depending on weather and how rested she is feeling after a morning of sleep!) and then another 30min at night before bed.

our old boy was happy with 30-45min in the morning, 30 min about lunch time and then another 20-30min at night before bed.

if we tried that with the girl she’d be climbing the walls by 11am 😂

BlackJacktheDog · 24/11/2024 19:34

Twice a day. 45-60mins each. Mostly over fields, woods etc.

Sounds like you spend most of your day walking/running!

Frangywangywoowah · 24/11/2024 19:44

Small breed dog, 7.5 years old.
Daily walk anything from 30 minutes to 3 hours (at weekends) once a day. He is then let out after meals, lunchtime and before bed. He is much less bothered about going out than he used to be.

Jackdog39 · 24/11/2024 19:51

We have 2 terriers, we walk them for an hour in the
afternoon but they do play in the garden all day. They have a routine, play fight/roll around in the morning. Then nap, then sit smartly in the garden office looking out for squirrels/magpies etc. Then walk in the woods for an hour and chase their ball, then tea, in the evening they are allowed in the sitting room in front of the fire. And repeat.

ExitPursuedByABare · 24/11/2024 19:53

9 year old Spaniel. Unfortunately can’t be let off lead.

50 minutes mid morning on long line
20 minutes round the block at night.

holjam · 24/11/2024 19:55

5 year old lab, 2 walks a day when we can, one would be for 60 mins the other 30.

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 24/11/2024 19:59

2 dogs (desperate for a third), off lead walk once a day for about 1 - 2 hours. Woodland mainly but also the beach occasionally.

@ExitPursuedByABare how come your dog can't be let off lead?

Pinkyponker · 24/11/2024 20:02

I’m a dog walker so they often come with me if I have spaces on group walks so can be anything from one to three or four hours a day, they are happy as long as they get one hour though, they don’t need more to be honest but they absolutely love it!
they are 5 and 4 year old mixed terrier types

obsessedwithfreshbread · 24/11/2024 20:05

2yr old staffie, usually 2x 30/45 minutes, not far just lots of sniffs (a normal dog would probably do the same distance in 20 mins!)
Weekends has a couple of longer walks but won't do more than an hour before he's shattered and then will refuse an evening walk.. plus dog field every other week off lead but after 30/40 minutes is done and walks back to the car 😂

bridgetreilly · 24/11/2024 20:05

Mine is a Lhasa Apso, recommended exercise 30-60 minutes. Usually he gets one 20-30 minute walk plus other shorter runs. We do a lot of games for mental stimulation at home which is much better for him, since his arthritis got worse. He is on painkillers, but nevertheless.

Lindjam · 24/11/2024 20:08

Labrador. 3 years old.

60-90 minutes every morning then another 30-60 minutes late afternoon.
