How long to you walk your dogs? How many times a day?

Lurcher (collie greyhound we think).

30 minutes first thing then 45-90 minutes some time afternoon Mon-Fri. All on lead as despite years of multiple training courses he's never learnt recall (was a rescue) and there are a lot of sheep and deer where I live. He has a big garden he can run laps of if he's in the mood.

He's 10 years old now so used to need a lot more! Now if it's raining he'll miss his morning walk. Used to have a dog walker at lunchtime but he started hiding from her, and I discovered through lockdown that even when I was home all day he didn't want to think of moving off the sofa until 3pm!

MarzipanAndFrenchFancies · 24/11/2024 20:21

Spaniel - 45 mins to 1 hour morning and evening, generally on lead weekdays, off lead weekends. She sniffs a lot on on lead walks.

Twice a week she has a 3rd walk with a dog walker, 1hr off lead.

noctilucentcloud · 24/11/2024 20:22

This will vary massively by breed and age of dog. My big breed 12 year old dog has arthritis so we're typically out for 1-2 hours a day split over two or three walks. But I'm led by him, sometimes he doesn't feel like it so just gets a shorter walk. And those walks have plenty of sniffing and saying hello to people time. Then there's also playtime and quite often some training/nose work. If you're thinking of getting a dog thing carefully about what breed and age will suit your activity levels best.

14 year old "some mix of terrier" gets a 1 hour a day walk plus morning and evening garden runs arounds.

Liesontoast · 24/11/2024 20:33

Varies when working from home. 3 walks a day. 30 mins in the morning in local field 3 mins away from house off lead, 45-1 hour at lunchtime in woods or local heath off lead, 20-30 mins in the evening on lead. Weekend 2 walks varies 2-3 hours during day 20’mins in evening street walk. 4 old Westie loves to sleep but loves his routine.

SweetSixty · 24/11/2024 21:05

4 year old terrier cross.
Two or three days a week we do a two hour walk in the mornings and about 45 minutes in the evening.
On the other days we're out for between four and six hours on one long walk (with picnic and flask stops) through open country/canal footpath/beach/moorland/hills.

I'm retired.

@VeterinaryCareAssistant

He's a rescue and had no training. I used to let him off but he would literally piss off with anyone if he thought they had something he fancied. He steals other dogs balls and shreds them in front of them. And he eats stones. Already had two operations. And he doesn’t like other dogs so if they approach him he’ll have a pop.

I can’t stand the stress. So long line it is.

That ok?

Once, they're only little

Sounds like you spend most of your day walking/running!

Sometimes it feels like it! Luckily I work late shift at work and she's usually calmed down a bit by then.

CrushingOnRubies · 25/11/2024 15:09

Honestly depends

On average 40 mins a day. But she is a fair weather pooch so yesterday got a lot less than that, sometimes it's 1hr30 or more

Jackdog39 · 24/11/2024 19:51

We have 2 terriers, we walk them for an hour in the
afternoon but they do play in the garden all day. They have a routine, play fight/roll around in the morning. Then nap, then sit smartly in the garden office looking out for squirrels/magpies etc. Then walk in the woods for an hour and chase their ball, then tea, in the evening they are allowed in the sitting room in front of the fire. And repeat.

This sounds delightful! Does anyone know any spells to turn people into dogs so I can apply for this life? :)

GuppytheCat · 25/11/2024 17:09

One year old nutter spaniel. She's up for any length of walk we can throw at her, but she's noticeably calmer if it includes some tracking or searching.

She's just been in season so no off lead time for a while.

nearly55 · 25/11/2024 17:16

Spaniel, 2 years old. We walk for 2-3 hours most mornings, mainly off-lead, and then another hour or so in the afternoon evening, mainly on-lead. He can also go out in the garden whenever he likes although he only really likes to do that if DH or I are out there too.

If we're going out hiking he'll happily walk all day in the hills/mountains - and still have that 'shall we go out for a walk then?' expression on his face about 10 minutes after we've finished!

Mineandyoursarediffrtent · 25/11/2024 17:27

I have a 12 yr old Dalmatian. We run together and he used to easily be able to go regularly over 20 miles in one go (our furthest together was 30 miles, took 8 hours!) . We'd be out together all day once a week doing this, then rest of the week average 5-7 miles per day (always just one run a day and at random times, I never want to be held to ransom). Now that he's older those ultra long days are behind us but he can still easily do 7/8 miles in one go although I tend to keep off the really hilly hills. If I'm short on time we'll do a spin around the village which is 1.5 miles which he adores too as it's all about sniffing stuff.

As is often said, pick a breed for your lifestyle and what you can offer them and you'll have a great time. I'm going to miss my boy so much when these days are over.

coffeesaveslives · 25/11/2024 17:37

We have a six year old beagle.

He goes out once a day, for anywhere between 45 minutes and three hours, but normally around an hour is average. He's pretty lazy to be honest - he didn't go out at all on Saturday with the weather and just slept all day.

However, saying that, he has company all the time which I think makes a huge difference - if he had to be left alone, we'd probably need to exercise him more.

SpunkyKoala · 25/11/2024 17:52

My gsd and doodle get 3mile off lead across fields everyday unless it’s super muddy then they get 3 mile lead walking with a few short off lead intervals we all need at least this to be happy we also play ball in the garden and do some light training each day. 2 days a week they go to day care for a different environment where they spend all day charging around and being petted

SpunkyKoala · 25/11/2024 17:54

They are also never really left there’s always someone around so they don’t get lonely or I chuck em in the car and take em with my but I acknowledge that they are utterly spoilt

SpunkyKoala · 25/11/2024 17:55

Mine will walk till their legs fall off but I am super concerned about their joints as both are breeds with dodgy hips and knees

Astrabees · 25/11/2024 18:10

Toy poodle and toy poodle cross. We go out once a day for 45 mins to an hour and about 2 or 3 times a week do a longer walk out in a local National Trust place or along the canal. They also romp about in the garden and no play ball.

EdithStourton · 25/11/2024 18:19

It varies.
We have two hunt-point-retreivers, both adult but not old.

They usually have 40 mins in the morning and 25-60 minutes in the afternoon. Today they had an hour off-lead first thing, and then this afternoon they had 30 mins off-lead but a lot of that was training time, so sit-stay, heelwork, retrieving.

Scattered about they get much longer walks, or days of work or training.

The absolute minimum they'd ever get would be just under an hour, and the maximum about 4. But with my two the most important thing is to exercise their brains, otherwise they get antsy and annoying, and also start to go self-employed.
