To ask if anyone else DOESN'T do Christmas stockings?

We Speedwells can't be the only family in Britain who don't put gifts in stockings.

Can we?

You might be

WhatHaveIDone21 · 22/11/2024 19:24

Nope we don't do stockings either! Although strangely enough DC2 has asked this year if we can despite the fact they are 9 and 13 and have never had them before!

WhatHaveIDone21 · 22/11/2024 19:24

I didn't have a stocking growing up either!

TobiasForgesContactLense · 22/11/2024 19:24

We never had them as kids but I do them for mine.

ImAMinion · 22/11/2024 19:26

Not that it matters, everyone does their own thing and has their own traditions - I suppose I might be curious to ask if you have ever “done” Santa / Father Christmasin any way? (As that’s who brings the stockings in my tradition, and still does even in my thirties 😉)

researchers3 · 22/11/2024 19:27

Never had one in my life!

My kids do though.

Merrymess · 22/11/2024 19:27

Nope we never had stockings growing up and I never did them for my kids either.

ValentinesDayCryingInTheHotel · 22/11/2024 19:27

i don’t remember having them as kids and I haven’t done any for my child to date

AppleKatie · 22/11/2024 19:28

We never had them growing up - although we did have everything you’d conventionally put in a stocking just mixed in with bigger gifts. I do them for my DC because I liked the idea and started it when they were young and it stuck.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 22/11/2024 19:30

You are not alone. Didn’t do them growing up, and we don’t have them now.

LochNessy · 22/11/2024 19:30

We do them, but it’s the only thing that Father Christmas brings in our house. All other presents are from us/family.

BadPeopleFan · 22/11/2024 19:30

@VioletSpeedwell why don't you do stockings?

Idontjetwashthefucker · 22/11/2024 19:30

Also never had them growing up or since

1MuffinSocks · 22/11/2024 19:31

We had pillowcases which had everything in including what would be classed as stocking gifts. Never knew it was such a thing before I joined Mumsnet.

Same.

N1C · 22/11/2024 19:32

Christmas stockings are excessive. My family don't do them either!

Soubriquet · 22/11/2024 19:34

We don’t. I never had them growing up, so never done them now either

PerditaLaChien · 22/11/2024 19:36

We had pillowcases as well. I remember we all had particular ones we liked to use for Christmas!

Gcsunnyside23 · 22/11/2024 19:37

My kids have stockings and get little fillers and chocolate in them buy my husband and I don't. Growing up I didn't have a stocking but we left out big sucks (like my dads football socks etc 😂)

Seashor · 22/11/2024 19:37

I LOVE making up stockings, they are the best part of Christmas for me. I love watching my children open them and they love receiving them. I make them up for my elderly neighbours, two ladies who live on their own, my mother in law to name a few.
Father Christmas brings them and all other gifts are from real people.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 22/11/2024 19:37

We do them with the little bits and pieces in, chocolate, fluffy socks, maybe some cool pencils etc and they're from father Christmas. I think it annoys the why did father Christmas but Veronica a pony and only got me a board game. We explain he can't fit big things on the sleigh and he's not a billionaire and the elves only make simple things.

Crazykefir · 22/11/2024 19:38

No. Used to buy a load of tat that didn't get used.

Fleamaker · 22/11/2024 19:39

Never done Christmas stockings, but I didn't have one growing up so it's never been a thing.

Don't do the Christmas pyjamas, boxes or Elf on shelf either

Butteredtoast55 · 22/11/2024 19:44

I never had them growing up. I did them for my DC until they were teenagers as they'd tend to be little things (and always a chocolate orange of course 😁)
One of my friends obsesses about getting stocking presents for everyone from about august onwards, and it's invariably a load of tat that she buys.

AliasGrape · 22/11/2024 19:44

We had pillowcases too, although I don’t remember them being a really big deal particularly - it wasn’t like ‘XYZ type of thing goes in the pillow case and the others under the tree’ which I feel like is how people do stockings now. I’m not even sure they happened every year - my big memory is of going downstairs to see if ‘he’d been’ and the presents would be under the tree, but I think on at least some years there may have been a few things put in a pillow case in our room.

We’ve done one for DD every year so far. I bought her a too small and too expensive personalised one for her first Christmas because I got carried away, then a friend also sent a larger knitted one which was also personalised. Neither of which are easy to duplicate which I’m kicking myself for now I’ve read the tip to have two the same to make filling easier without waking anyone! I do really like it when she opens the stocking in our bed first before going downstairs though - we always have guests staying at Christmas and sticking their beak in the general present opening so that bit always feels special just the three of us!
