UK made missiles launched into Russia today. AIBU to think it would make more sense on a geopolitical level to wait until Trump was in place to determine major changes to UK strategy?

Why? So he can insert himself up Putrid's butt and half Ukraine is handed over to a short arse psychopathic reptile who's living in the far past?

Not a good plan Natasha.

XWKD · 20/11/2024 17:28

No. The UK acted on the basis of the situation as it currently stands.

DdraigGoch · 20/11/2024 17:34

No, the best time to act was a year ago. The second best time to act is now.

Meadowfinch · 20/11/2024 17:37

No, Ukraine need help now and Putin needs to understand we will support Ukraine

thingymijigi · 20/11/2024 17:52

The missiles won't be going anywhere near Russian cities, it's purely to defend Ukraine and within international law. Once Trump is in a negotiated settlement will take place. In the meantime, there will be an increase in activity on both sides so both Ukraine and Russia are in the best position possible for negotiations.

This. I really hope Ukraine is not sacrificed on the altar of Russian appeasement next year

Aria999 · 20/11/2024 21:11

@Justcallmebebes I can't see Trump continuing to support them.

Yep...we have been fed a lot of propaganda about Ukraine...picture this. Scotland goes independent of England, signs a trade deal that excludes England...the same body who Scotland have signed with blocks England dealing with france, Holland, Germany...you get the picture.

Russia is pissed off because the eu moved to remove countries from it's sphere of influence even though it damaged the eu...Romania, Albania and Bulgaria for example....Third world countries.

Now Biden...a man suffering from dementia had allowed Ukraine to use us weapons and now we have...ffs!. Less than 10 years ago the female leader of a Ukrainian political was put in jail. It's not a democratic state...the current leader is a joke candidate to point this out. In 2018 Lee child's Jack reacher book was about Ukrainian gangsters...

I'm not a Putin apologist. I just don't want to have to volunteer at 56 to fight for Britain in a war we could avoid...but if we do get sucked in because I love England right or wrong and I will go.

hanali · 20/11/2024 21:37

Politicians are playing a very dangerous game of poker at the moment.

What a pile of misinformed, Putin apologist bollocks!

Better late than never Op.

Seriously I'm not Google what I've said. I'm right of centre English...but I don't want to fight a war for a corrupt country that is no way the Bastian of democracy it's painted to be.
Putin is an evil fucker, but the West could have stopped him(not sure if it's on sounds but radio 4 had a great documentary series on him circa 2020). But they let it go.

remember Ukraine for centuries was part of russia.

WinterMorn · 20/11/2024 22:01

Yes, we should have intervened earlier. I don’t disagree there. The rest of your post though……

I haven’t seen reports of where the missiles landed. I have only read Ukraine stating they hit “Russian rear bases” and that they landed in the Kursk region.

I’d like to hope the usage is within international law and that we are keeping a close eye on it. I don’t have a lot of confidence our government will do this though as they have completely failed to ensure the weapons we sold and are selling to Israel have been used within international law.

I am not sure we should be blindly trusting anyone with our weapons.

EarthlingHere · 20/11/2024 22:08

In the bigger picture, I don’t think that Putin will ever declare war on any NATO country, it would be a suicide mission no matter his ego. But, why are we not worried about having two elderly men at the front of the world’s greatest power? I mean Putin is rumoured to be dying of cancer so what stops him ending all humanity with him?

Ukraine is an independent country, with its own unique culture, language and identity. Its not up to you, or Trump, or Putin to decide whether Ukraine deserves to exist, and whether it should give up parts/ all of it to a violent murderous psycho who happened to be its neighbour. Ukraine's history is colourful, there was a lot of stuff happening in the past, but Ukrainians are not Russian, they are not part of Russia and they dont belong to Russia, ok? Maybe write it down somewhere.

Yes, we do need to change the hierarchies and structures to ensure that people from more diverse, less traditional backgrounds can enter politics. It’s such a narrow path right now.

I agree Ukraine is not Russia now, but the poster pointed out that there is a long historic connection between Russia and Ukraine that Putin is capitalising on to justify his invasion with intent to annex. That’s not their opinion, it is historic fact.

Ukraine for centuries was part of russia

The original capital city of Russia was Kyiv- ie Kievan Rus.
The Russian empire expanded from Ukraine.
Most of history, Ukraine has been part of Russia.

CandlesandClemantines · 20/11/2024 22:25

Lbc had some very interesting commentary on this, Andrew marr.
One said there won't be nuclear war because our collective response would kill every single Russian fast..
However he said also don't take nuclear options with a pinch of salt but more so sabotage like cutting pipes, novochok poison, assassination, information disruption and so on.

He also said we need to adjust to modern war fare and where best to spend money

hanali · 20/11/2024 22:32

I don't think Putin will go nuclear. He knows he can't get away with it. I think he will look at other options such as upping supply of weapons to other enemies of the West such as Iran, Yeman, NK, etc, that will potentially bite us in the arse another way.

CandlesandClemantines · 20/11/2024 22:33

@hanali small localised nuclear is possible.

I'll never understand why we all allowed him to mass on the border and didn't help Ukraine to mass back with strength

All true and I would add that it's not up to Ukraine to decide whether or not the US supplies military aid to Ukraine or not. It's the US Government to decide how they spend US taxpayers money.

If the European countries disagree with the US pulling military aid then of course they are entitled to make up the aid shortfall by increasing their own spending as a percentage of GDP on the military. Of course they won't because that will mean either higher taxes or lower spending on other areas when what they really want is for US taxpayers to foot the bill.

Because Ukraine is not a member of NATO, or the EU^, or the Commonwealth, or a British territory/possession. Technically there is no agreement requiring us to defend them without the agreement of all NATO.

^Putin first invaded Ukraine in 2014 btw, when the Crimea was annexed from Ukraine to Russia, when we were still in the EU.

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 20/11/2024 22:47

I suppose the other side of the coin is.
Pension funds collapse because UK makes missiles that nobody ever uses.
