Is this just having a laugh or belittling?

How would you feel if your partner 'quizzed' you on certain things that he knows you don't know the answer to - eg who sings this song/ wrote this poem/what's this flower etc.? Both in front of others and also alone. Made me feel stupid in front of his parents when I didn't know who sang a couple of songs on radio.

Maybe I'm being sensitive, I'd just be interested on opinions.

You could try the tactic my teenage daughter uses which is to give the look and say I literally don’t care…. That would shut him up and make him look stupid for asking pointless questions

Mine doesn’t even have to speak. He’s perfected a look which says it all!

😂😂 she needs to channel her inner teenager!

JoanCollected · 18/11/2024 14:25

Him: What’s the name of this song?
Response: How many bones in the human foot?
Him: you seriously don’t know, ha ha
Response: I know how many bones are in a human foot. Come on, you can’t not know that! Seriously.

Hallllllllie · 18/11/2024 14:28

How would he know if you know the song or not?

Why would you feel stupid for not knowing a song?

It's neither belittling or having a laugh.

Devilsmommy · 18/11/2024 14:30

He sounds like an absolute twat. I'd just ignore or as pp said ask him a question you know he won't know the answer to

I'd do the teenage daughter response

Who gives a shit

Lindjam · 18/11/2024 18:34

I would dump him, he sounds like a berk who enjoys belittling you.

I would, too. He sounds awful. His parents should be ashamed of him. If they aren't then that bodes very badly for any future with him.

CarrotPencil · 18/11/2024 18:37

If it’s so dumb not to know, then he’s dumb too surely?? If he has to ask then he doesn’t know does he? Surely he’s not asking a question he already knows the answer to, what a waste of life!

Ugh he’s irritating me OP! It’s very belittling.

My answer for stupid questions is either ‘if you don’t know, I can’t help you’ which is nonsensical but it makes me laugh.

Or say a stupid answer and say ‘well, ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer!’ and twirl away without a care to go and do something joyful.

Kaleidoscopic101 · 18/11/2024 18:40

I went out with someone like this. He was a narcissistic douche bag and this was the beginning of the end for me.

BrunetteHarpy · 18/11/2024 18:40

Dumporama.

VacuumPacked · 18/11/2024 18:40

cliff richards/eartha kitt
pam ayres
daisy

what does it matter
point him in the direction of pub quiz nights

despises him

Yup, either this or 'You tell me' or 'Don't know, don't care'. Repeat depending on how you feel.

Milknosugarta · 18/11/2024 18:41

LTB, he's a knob.

twoshedsjackson · 18/11/2024 18:42

"Why? Have you forgotten?"
"Why do you need to know?"
Actually The Look is probably the best option.

GettingStuffed · 18/11/2024 18:44

You can answer "a musician/band/singer". We've done something similar in quizzes as none of us care about football so we accept a footballer as a correct answer as we'd be there forever if we didn't.

No need to be rude. I still can't understand what's belittling about asking someone about a song. I still don't understand why someone would feel stupid for not knowing the name of a song.

If my DH asked me if I knew a song he would be asking because he wanted to know if I knew the song, and I would never feel stupid for not knowing.

So yeah, no need to be rude. But thanks for your irrelevant comment.

Missionimprobable · 18/11/2024 18:51

In our family it's "name the movie" when a song comes on, they also point at you like a gameshow host.
Even my lash lady does it (family friend).
I just say I don't know because I don't care.

Projectme · 18/11/2024 18:53

My In-laws did this when I first met them. I'd say ooo is that XYZ on telly and they'd snort and laugh and so NO it's so-and-so....oh fancy you saying that...what made you say that...how weird...you are funny!!

And they'd just laugh and take the piss. So I stopped speaking when I was in their company they asked DH why this was and he told them. They don't do it anymore but I still don't bother speaking to them much when I'm in the same room as them .

Cornecopia · 18/11/2024 18:56

What’s the name of this song?
’oh it’s go fuck your self by I don’t care’
🤓

Nothavingfunrightnow · 18/11/2024 19:08

My father used to do this kind of thing. He one day asked me some irrelevant, random thing. I said I didn't know. He expressed fake shock that I didn't know the answer. I replied that I knew lots of things, but I didn't know that. It was fucking annoying and embarrassing when he'd ask me shit in front of other people just to try to show off his knowledge.

I know how you feel, OP. It's irritating, embarrassing (for him), and quite frankly, downright pathetic.

EvilsElsasPetSnowman · 18/11/2024 19:12

I had to tell my DH to stop doing the same as it pissed me off. “How much do you think average YouTuber makes?” Followed by a pause for example. why are you fucking asking me when your intention is to tell me yourself. It was just the way he worded it but it used to really irk me. Just fucking tell me.

This is what I ended up doing with my DH - “I couldn’t give a fuck”
