To ask how cold NYC is?

Hi, I'm off to NYC in 2 weeks and wanting to know how cold it is at that time of the year. Google is saying 13 degrees but people have said its really really cold 🥶 and panicking at what clothes to pack! Has anyone been to NYC end of Nov before and can tell me what clothes will be best. I have thermal base layers already. Would fleece lined joggers be too much? 🤔 many thanks!!

When I went it was the end of January and was -6c and colder on the water (I’m from Scotland and have never felt cold like it). 13c is just like the uk now really. When it was so cold I wore thermal vest, thin long sleeved top, hoody and coat and thermal leggings underneath jeans. You won’t need that at all. Jeans, jumper and coat will be fine.

SnapAndFartAllDayLong · 08/11/2024 18:14

Thank you! I thought it would be like it is here until someone said they've never felt cold like it in Nov 🙄🙄 no need to panic buy artic clothing then 🤣🤣🤣

The average November temp in NYC is around 12 during the day and around 6 at night.

ZoeRuby · 08/11/2024 18:19

I was there earlier this week and it was 23 degrees one day! Fluctuations day to day can vary much more than we’re used to in the UK so worth checking the forecast for your entire trip.

jwnib · 08/11/2024 18:20

All you can do is check the forecast before you go. I've been a couple of times over winter, February was freezing, December was quite mild (rained a fair bit). It's similar to here, you could arrive in a cold snap or it could be mild.

I recommend taking a scarf, it gets quite blowy with the tall buildings.

Thelondonone · 08/11/2024 18:23

It’s the coldest place I’ve ever been (for new year). However, they had the worst blizzards for about 20 years. It’s so unpredictable, take thermals and layers and you’ll be fine.

mynameiscalypso · 08/11/2024 18:28

It's impossible to tell. I've been there at the end of Nov and there's been a huge snowstorm and I've been there when it's been milder than the UK.

amusedbush · 08/11/2024 18:34

I was there in mid-late November 2018 and it was bloody freezing. On Thanksgiving day it was officially -9 degrees but the wind chill took it down to -18.

Like @BashfulClam, I’m born and bred Scottish but have never felt cold like it.

The tall buildings and grid layout in Manhattan means you’ll often turn a corner into a wind tunnel, so I’d recommend a hat and scarf to keep your face/ears toastie.

WhatsitWiggle · 08/11/2024 18:37

Take layers. The wind can be bitter so whilst the temperature might be 10 degrees, it can feel much colder between the tall buildings.

dixon86 · 08/11/2024 18:44

I went in Feb 2001 and it was really cold. I remember the ice cold wind blasting through the skyscrapers all the time

coxesorangepippin · 08/11/2024 18:45

Well this week and next it's mild

Check back in a week

You'll need a good coat (but probably not winter weight), boots and perhaps stick in gloves and hat just in case

Enjoy NYC it's beautiful ❤️

BigBundleOfFluff · 08/11/2024 18:56

Keep checking! I went in November a few years ago, expecting it to be freezing. First day we arrived it was 18 and I had to buy lighter clothes. It then dropped overnight to 6.

TTPDTS · 08/11/2024 18:58

Check the weather app frequently!! I have been November / December / January - all different temperatures, I had to take outfits for every chance 😂 I found November and December lovely and fresh and really enjoyed it, January was quite brisk.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 08/11/2024 18:59

Keep an eye on the weather forecast, so changeable. I follow a few New Yorkers on Insta and they were in shorts and t shirt yesterday it was so mild.

Myattention · 08/11/2024 19:01

We went in January albeit late January and it was shorts and t shirt weather for all but 2 of our 7 days. We wasted cash on thermals, winter boots etc that we simply didn’t need. My advice is check the weather on the day you leave, not before and then pack accordingly.

FlibbertyGibbitt · 08/11/2024 19:03

Went early December 2022. Absolutely freezing, they were expecting a snow bomb thing to land. I took thermals and a jumper and a quilted coat and was ok with that

WhichEllie · 08/11/2024 19:03

It’s around 21c today, though the NE US seems to be having an abnormally warm autumn. It will be cooler in two weeks but probably not cold even by our standards. I’d take a variety of options so you can layer/un-layer as needed.

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 08/11/2024 19:08

Layers are your friend in NYC. It fluctuates alot. Also you're often going in and out of places so layers help. I've been to NYC in february and its been -5c one day and 2 days later it was 17c...so prepare for changes.

Check forecast but i doubt youll need thermals or a super thick coat. Jeans, comfortable shoes, a coat and a light hat and gloves in case. Its cold nearer the water so if you're doing statue of liberty etc or an open top bus, you'll be glad of the gloves.

Remember you can shop there if needed.

Shoes are the most important thing. Even on a low walking day there its easy to hit 20k steps and its pavement so can really hurt after days on end of it without decent footwear.

TheWittyBird · 08/11/2024 19:13

It can be absolutely frozen, we were sitting in teeshirts one day and frozen to the marrow next day ,,take yer chance

TheWittyBird · 08/11/2024 19:16

I was there in February before lockdown coldest place on earth ( and I'm from Scotland) I had my underarmour on and kept wearing them all the time I didn't change except my underwear in the morning thermal underwear too

Everythingaches · 08/11/2024 19:18

I was there last week and it was boiling!

LindorDoubleChoc · 08/11/2024 19:21

Panic about what clothes to pack? I hope you never have to experience real panic.

BashfulClam · 08/11/2024 19:22

It is a weird place weather wise as when I went in early April it was 25c and I got sunburnt! I had long sleeved tops and jeans had to buy a few t shirts

MellersSmellers · 08/11/2024 19:31

I think it's quite mild at the moment so you should be OK. Take a windproof coat for the boat out to Liberty or Staten Island.
We've been a few times as my sister lives there and in Feb half term it was feckin' freezing - snow piled up on the sidewalks! August is humid, hot and unbearable.

Casualbrowser21 · 08/11/2024 19:32

It’s really warm at the moment and has been all October/November so far. Currently around 20 degrees.

Would recommend bringing a jacket and some layers just in case!
