To ask how cold NYC is?

Hi, I'm off to NYC in 2 weeks and wanting to know how cold it is at that time of the year. Google is saying 13 degrees but people have said its really really cold 🥶 and panicking at what clothes to pack! Has anyone been to NYC end of Nov before and can tell me what clothes will be best. I have thermal base layers already. Would fleece lined joggers be too much? 🤔 many thanks!!

I would plan for slightly colder than the UK so definitely warm winter clothes

umdontdothat · 08/11/2024 19:36

Same sort of clothes you'd wear at home in UK but lots of layers, in case it's warmer than expected. I've just come back too, it was warm and sunny. I don't think there's been any rainfall for some time there.

I'm just back and it was very mild. It was very warm before I arrived last Friday, a bit cooler thankfully for the marathon on Sunday and then warm again Monday and Tuesday. It was around 22° in the afternoons of the warm days but cooler in the mornings. On marathon day it was around 15°.
I know it varies hugely though, hearing from friends who ran there in previous years. Temperatures are currently above average there for this time of year.

I went at the end of a December for a week. It wasn't any colder than the UK at the same time and most days a coat and layers were fine. I got too hot in hat, scarf and thermals, however that might have been unusual.

In general prepare for it to be really cold and if forecast is better than that, happy days. You'll be either walking a lot or on public transport or indoors. Layers are definitely essential!

We went the last week of November a few years ago and it was fine during the day but fucking hell, the wind absolutely chilled you to the bone at night. We went out the hotel at 8pm to go for a walk and take some photos - the doorman looked at us most quizically when we said No to a cab. He laughed his head off when we ran back in through the doors 90 seconds later.... the wind literally took your breath away. I've never experienced anything like it.

Panic about what clothes to pack? I hope you never have to experience real panic.

Calm down surely you know what OP means!

Crushed23 · 08/11/2024 20:06

I'm heading there in 11 days and I can see that the forecast is 12-15 degrees for the first couple of days. Unusually mild for the time of year.

You should just check the forecast nearer your trip and pack accordingly.

I lived in Manhattan for 5 years, and the weather can be really warm in November or really cold! I had New Year's Eves with snow and another when out and about in a t-shirt. At the moment it is really warm - today was 21C, and it could well be quite chilly overnight. Layers will be your friend. NYC at this time of year is utterly lovely - enjoy. I am envious!

ItsVeryHyacinthBucket · 08/11/2024 20:12

I was there 22nd November for 5 days in 2022 and it was like it is here right now (south England) I.e. cold but not freezing, coats, jeans and boots weather - take sunnies. Definitely not arctic!

TimeForBedSaidZebadee · 08/11/2024 20:22

My Ds flew over there yesterday. I was panicking as he never ever wears a coat. If he's cold he will throw a hoodie over his t shirt. I really thought he was going to freeze.
He called today and said it's fine, pics on SM show he is just in his normal t shirt.
Things could change though, I would keep an eye on the forecast.

Novemberain · 08/11/2024 22:21

The wind blows right through you, no place for the old !

MomOfTwoGirls2 · 08/11/2024 22:54

I was there mid December last year.
it was much milder than I expected.

2 weeks prior it had been forecasted to be very cold. But as other poster mentioned, you need to keep an eye on the forecast, it can change quickly.

My advice is to bring layers and have options. I had only warm jumpers and a warm jacket, and the sweat was rolling down my back!! I couldn’t find light layers in the shops there either!

pikkumyy77 · 08/11/2024 22:56

We are there right now and its gorgeous. But there is no telling in two weeks

Cosycover · 08/11/2024 22:59

Also from Scotland so very used to cold weather.

I went to NYC in January and have never felt cold like it. Don't actually remember what the temp was but it caused me actual physical pain.

It hurts your bones.
