To have never washed my vacuum cleaner!

So have been watching these tik tok videos about women washing their vacuum cleaners which makes sense when you think about it! They run water through the hose and wash everything except the motor part. Anyone else do this? Or not do this ...?!!

I barely clean the filter. Never washed my vacuum in my life, don’t imagine I ever will.

Unless I was trying to dream up ever more content for my TikTok cleaning channel I guess…

Lentilweaver · 08/11/2024 12:51

I need to wash my vacuum cleaner? This is why I am not on TikTok.

seven201 · 08/11/2024 12:52

I don't think I'm ever going to be the type of person who cleans my vacuum cleaner! If it stops working I poke around to clear a blockage, that's it. I've not seen any videos on this - who has time to either clean or vacuum or make a tiktok of it?

itsmylife7 · 08/11/2024 12:52

That's what I love about Henry hoover.

Take the top part (motor ) off and every other part can be washed.

Ifailed · 08/11/2024 12:53

presumably you are also supposed to vacuum your washing mashing regularly?

spanieleyes22 · 08/11/2024 12:54

lol tik tok is so addictive I think I'm going to delete it. I never knew that was a thing. Washing your Hoover. They say it makes it work like new again though so I might have a go at washing it. I'll probably break it knowing me though!

Ugh thank you Mumsnet for giving me yet another thing to be embarrassed about not doing! 😳

Huh?

Cardboardeaux · 08/11/2024 12:54

What do they think is going to happen if the inside of the hose stays, err, dusty??

Only after machine washing the iron and the food processor. They have a small appliances setting, right?

Chasingsquirrels · 08/11/2024 13:00

I wash mine infrequently, not the hoses but the filters and the dirt collection bit. Mainly because DPs dog smells and it makes the vacuum smell when you use it. It does also improve the effectiveness though.

With my robovac I regularly clean the filters, mainly running the handheld vacuum over the filter when I empty the dirt collection box, but also washing the filter.

I am so far from a tiktok-er, or any kind of household inspiration type person.

fanaticalfairy · 08/11/2024 13:00

Why does it make sense to wash your vacuum cleaner....? 🤔

Printedword · 08/11/2024 13:00

Ok, so it’s an electric appliance not used in wet environments so no I would not wash it. I might rinse, wet wipe detachable parts and thoroughly dry before reattaching, but I’m more likely to dry wipe or dust them and the whole thing.

WhichSock · 08/11/2024 13:00

At what point during the vacuum cleaner cleaning process do they suddenly realise what they’re doing and contemplate in horror the sad empty void that is their life?

Plump82 · 08/11/2024 13:01

I wash the filter as it gets clogged up with cat hair and stops work but that's the only reason why. Before I had a hoover like this I never washed any part of it.

AddieLoggins2 · 08/11/2024 13:01

I don't have a TikTok account but I've been cleaning my vacuum cleaner for years. It literally says to clean the filter in the instructions. And I do notice it makes a big difference to how much is sucked up.

In terms of washing the other parts, yeah I give them a quick rinse over - especially the bit that actually gets rubbed over the carpet (the head? - especially the fluffy roller bit) Otherwise what's the point of hoovering if I'm going to rub something dirty all over the floor anyway.

What waste of time. Making dust residue wet makes it sticky, dry wipe it off

Nah, it's tiktok, it's not real life. There's videos of women scrubbing an already clean floor with all sorts, every day. They clean an already clean sink, wash already clean windows etc.

Ignore them. They're the same people putting foodstuffs that were bought in clear plastic containers into different clear plastic containers, putting their laundry detergents on display and karate chopping their cushions all day.

Clearing the filters, yes. But WASHING the entire appliance, including rinsing inside the hose??

KnopkaPixie · 08/11/2024 13:15

I haven't ever washed the inside of the vacuum cleaner but I left a plumber (we knew each other quite well, he did regular jobs for me) working in the house and when I came back he had finished cleaning up and was washing the hoover in the sink.

A few days earlier my dog had been put to sleep at the vet's and he just said, "Smells of dead dog. Not healthy for you. Very sad."

Nice man.

shellyleppard · 08/11/2024 13:17

I wash the filter occasionally but that's it....

I just stick mine in the dishwasher.

Poffy · 08/11/2024 13:23

If it's one of those that collect the dirt in bags then no. If it's the sort you empty then yes. They come apart and the instructions tell you to clean them. Mine gets done every few months.
Aside from that you should tip it over and clean the brushes especially if anyone in the house has long hair. It makes a big difference to performance.
Would you dust with a dirty rag?
Wash up with a filthy dishcloth?

But hasn't your washing machine had dirty pants in it? And you put it in the dishwasher?? How gross! 😉
