To wonder if Karma actually happens

chubbychopsticks · 07/11/2024 16:28

Just this really. Has anyone seen karma happen or is it just a way to feel better. To talk oneself out of a funk? Talking with a friend about this following her experience where someone had lied and gaslit for their own ends. They sound like they did quite well leaving my friend out of pocket and out of a job. I

We won't be able to see Karma in action in its Buddhist sense as you are supposed to pay your karmic debts in your next existence and not during your current life cycle.
In the context you refer to (good or bad luck being somehow linked to actions), whether it happens or not depends on how superstitious you are. Do you believe that a black cat crossing your path is bad luck? Or that dreaming about cockroaches leads to coming upon some money? Same thing.

StopStartStop · 07/11/2024 17:02

No.
And 'karmic debts' are just prompts for learning experiences.

Anotherparkingthread · 07/11/2024 17:03

It's absolute tosh. Everybody I know who's rich is awful inside and they don't give a shit/don't believe they are lol. They have got up by stepping on how other people. That's how it works.

It's another thing, like god, a useful an invisible force to stop us saying or doing something horrible. It serves society well to believe in it. It gives people hope and a sense of justice. It doesn't make it true.

Swivelhead · 07/11/2024 17:04

I think there is something in the notion that we end up with the face we deserve. Perhaps not to a Dorian Gray degree, but the unpleasant people I know all look rather hard

LostTheMarble · 07/11/2024 17:07

No, what the ‘appropriated’ idea of karma is, is absolute nonsense. Life has ups and downs for everyone, so something significantly bad happening to someone who seemingly deserves it isn’t karma, just coincidence. The word is used completely out of what it actually means to people of certain beliefs - as a PP said, actual karma is a belief in life cycles/reincarnation based on your previous lives good and bad.

ohyesido · 07/11/2024 17:10

Some people think karma is their own personal tool of revenge but I don't believe it exists in that sense. I do believe that the law of attraction exists somehow and our thoughts create our reality

WhichSock · 07/11/2024 17:10

No, of course it doesn’t exist.

I suppose there might be informal karma, sometimes. For example, if someone goes round being horrible to everyone, the chances of them getting punched at some point is probably higher.

dottiehens · 07/11/2024 18:13

I always think if you act on bad faith you get it back with illness, accidents or horrible death. If not Karma what is called? Punishment for bad actions in the life you acted badly.

YOOHOOITSMEEE · 07/11/2024 18:32

i know for a fact curses do though

Riapia · 07/11/2024 18:41

To wonder if Karma actually happens

Only by chance, not by request.

HermioneWeasley · 07/11/2024 18:51

No. Jimmy Saville died a national hero, lay “in state” and was mourned by millions.

there is no cosmic system of justice

Pumpkincozynights · 07/11/2024 18:56

No I don’t think it exists in the way most people talk about it.
Lots of horrible people live a very nice life.

I think it does exist, the person who gaslit your friend, people will see through it and learn to avoid and distrust. They may miss out on opportunities which are not offered to them because they have developed a bad rep. It might be as they get old and go into a care home, they don't get any visitors. It might not be obvious, they may not even notice, but it will be there. We reap what we sow.

Theunamedcat · 07/11/2024 19:30

No my ex is a shocking excuse for a human people like him despite his multiple arrests he has a wife family money falls towards him the only thing he doesn't have is his children but that's because he doesn't want them he falls on his feet loses a job on Wednesday gets another on Thursday that sort of person

And no not seeing his children isn't his "karma" he doesn't care about them one bit they don't serve his purpose

AbbeyGrange · 07/11/2024 19:35

Do you believe that a black cat crossing your path is bad luck?

Black cats are lucky in the UK

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 07/11/2024 19:36

The popular idea of karma is just wishing for justice. Too much evidence that plenty of foul people have lives they are happy with until they die.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 07/11/2024 19:38

There is no balancing force in the Universe righting wrongs, sadly.

NoProblems · 07/11/2024 19:46

Could it be that Harris' bad karma made her lose and Trump's good karma made him win?

feellikeanalien · 07/11/2024 19:50

I think people would like to believe in it but in reality there is no such thing. Maybe in another life if you believe in stuff like that .

Moonlightstars · 07/11/2024 19:56

I don't believe in karma in that direct sense
However, if you think about someone like Donald trump who is an absolute cunt, it may look like he has won, but in reality he has no one close to him that actually likes him. Even his wife hates him. He may have material wealth and power but he is disliked by those closest to him time and time again. I know I have much preferred to be where I am which is loved by most people near me and liked by a lot more but pretty skint.

Thank goodness because I have three I'm not sure if I feel any more lucky tthough suppose I'm cash poor but furry head bumps rich?

DreamW3aver · 07/11/2024 20:28

How could it possibly be an actual thing? Is there someone or an army of someones watching the whole world and somehow organising paybacks?

OAPapparently · 07/11/2024 20:34

No, never seen it in action.
Bad people have great lives, and I’ve seen lots of good people suffer.
The idea that it’s paid back in the next life is laughable too. Apart from a certain type of person, most people don’t remember living past lives, so if it was real it’s a pointless thing anyway.
Its like anything. A way of shutting up the poor and suffering. The original victim-blaming.

True. So did Al Fayed etc etc.
Get revenge if you want it
Or focus on law of attraction and focus on what you want more of xxxx

Guavafish1 · 07/11/2024 20:40

No it’s not
