Do people really drive round / get a taxi with dead cats ???

Isthisreallyathing · 01/11/2024 20:18

Sadly found a deceased cat outside my home so posted on the local fb group a description and location. Then I get loads of replies telling me to take it to a vet to be scanned - I don’t drive and have a sleeping toddler ! They call me selfish and suggest getting a taxi !!

Do people really do this ? AIBU not to ?? (I don’t think I am but 100% of responses were telling me to get the cat scanned for a chip to locate owners)

Tell them this. And suggest that THEY take it to the Vet's if they are that bothered.

ForGreyKoala · 01/11/2024 20:22

People here do take dead cats to the vets to be scanned, but I can't imagine anyone doing so in a taxi - I, a massive cat lover, wouldn't do it. You have done your bit by letting people know OP, if someone else wants to take it to a vet they can do so. Don't give it another thought.

usernother · 01/11/2024 20:22

In my area there is a person from one of the local cat charities that has a mobile scanner and will come out to the cat.

I thought I was doing the right thing putting it on there but everyone was angry !

Ill see if I can find someone to contact to do that I feel bad as it’s clearly a well looked after cat sadly with a lovely collar so will be missed

YANBU. I would not be able to deal with a dead cat, let alone take it in a taxi somewhere. I would saying where it is, and letting someone less squeamish deal with it.

Years ago, I hit a seagull with my motorbike. Someone on here told me to take it to a rescue... how? Put it in my pocket?

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 01/11/2024 20:24

Yes, but I drive, there is also a vet's at the end of my street. Non driver with a sleeping toddler, no but would send DH or he'd stay at home, or if he was away I'd ask elderly ndn to sit in while I ran the poor thing down to the vets.

What have you done with it? I couldn't leave a dead animal, someone's pet no less, lying in the road and I couldn't throw it in the bin!

usernother · 01/11/2024 20:25

You're doing all you can OP. Ignore the people giving you grief.

MidnightBlossom · 01/11/2024 20:26

I've taken a dead cat to the vet before - driver in front of me hit a cat and didn't stop. I had an old blanket in the boot so wrapped the cat up and took him to the local vet. At least if he was chipped the owner can be notified.

Oh goodness ! Sometimes I think people are very quick to suggest things on fb and get quite irritable when you explain why it’s not possible but a seagull ! They aren’t exactly friendly at the best of times I can’t imagine trying to get an injured annoyed one anywhere!!!

I would never pay a taxa to identify a dead cat. People choose to let them roam. It costs a lot of cats their lives.

I would box it and spread the word on FB - and hope the owner to show.

Plump82 · 01/11/2024 20:27

As upsetting as I'd find it and id probably really struggle as I'm a massive cat lover, but if it had a collar I'd try and see if there was contact details on it. Id also probably get an old towel and put it in a box or something. Can't imagine what could happen to it over night and that would be so upsetting for the owner. You did a good thing though putting it on Facebook and I hope it's owner sees it.

SatansBobbleheadedDashboardOrnament · 01/11/2024 20:30

The imagery this thread title created 😂

Anyway, no, people do not generally fork out money for taxis to take a dead cat to the vet. A post on Facebook to try to find the owner (preferably without photo of dead cat, as I have seen before) is helpful and would suffice.

Igavebirthtoabanana · 01/11/2024 20:32

No way I would. If you let your cat to roam freely, you’d need to accept this kind of thing may then happen.

StarDolphins · 01/11/2024 20:34

I wouldn’t want to but I absolutely would. Even if I had my DD with me. They have owners that want to know. My cat went missing & the thought of her dead somewhere was awful. I’d have rather known if she’d been knocked down.

RichardOsmansFreakishlyBigHand · 01/11/2024 20:36

Most serial commenters on local facebook groups are fucking crackpots. You've done your bit, of course dont get a taxi to the vets unless you really want to!

People accept these things happen, but it's incredibly cruel not to let them know!

I drive, so yes I'd take it to the vets. If I didn't drive I'd ask neighbours/friends to help me or find a charity that will either come & scan or come & collect. Failing that I'd wrap it up, put in in a box & bus it to the vets.

Just try persuading a stunned injured owl that you rescued from a road at night that it wants to be put in a Mint Velvet carrier bag and taken to the Abingdon emergency vet.

It was NOT happy. Neither was I (feather phobic). Boyfriend had to let me drive and take over fighting the owl. Emergency vet was truly lovely, FWIW.

I’d be terrified ! Owls have sharp beaks I remember being terrified when it was a thing in the 80s to have a school photo taken with a bird of prey - we got to choose a falcon or an owl . Most of the kids ended up pecked or with bird poo down their backs and we all had a strange grimace and side eye in the photos because we were all scared 😂

I’ve taken dead cats to the vets before to be scanned.

My cat died and people went out of their way to find me and I will forever be grateful to them.

I wouldn’t get a taxi purely because I couldn’t afford it.

As PPs said, many people will have a scanner now or would be willing to take it to the vets on their way to somewhere else.

You did a nice thing by putting it on FB.
I’m sorry you’re getting abuse on there.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 01/11/2024 20:58

You don't drive and have a sleeping child so no you shouldn't feel guilty about this. Some people feel strongly about these things, let them do it. My sister was desperately searching for her cat when she got a call from a vet, someone had indeed gotten a taxi to scan the cat. She was forever grateful. But that kind woman also a cat owner and didn't have a young child to look after. It's a wonderful thing to do but no one should be criticised for not doing it!

MildGreenDairyLiquid · 01/11/2024 21:01

I would. In fact I’d get an Uber Exec, give it the send off it deserves.

Devonjaguar · 01/11/2024 21:05

Not what you asked for OP but the answer to these type of things is simply - do not post on social media. It's a horrible place. I know you meant well.

I'd ring a local vet and see what they say. You can't take the cat to the vet when you've got a young child.

sugarpiehoneymunch · 01/11/2024 21:07

Facebook community groups in my town are exactly the same! The poor person that finds the Cat gets a bashing for trying to help find the owner - it's crazy!

Okbyethen · 01/11/2024 21:10

Cats are free to roam, unfortunately one of the risks is that they may get hit by a vehicle. I wouldn't put a dead cat or other dead animal in my car either, and I definitely wouldnt pay for a taxi for it.
