Do people really drive round / get a taxi with dead cats ???

Sadly found a deceased cat outside my home so posted on the local fb group a description and location. Then I get loads of replies telling me to take it to a vet to be scanned - I don’t drive and have a sleeping toddler ! They call me selfish and suggest getting a taxi !!

Do people really do this ? AIBU not to ?? (I don’t think I am but 100% of responses were telling me to get the cat scanned for a chip to locate owners)

I found a dead cat on the side of the road a while ago. I was going to work so placed it to one side out of the way of cars and pedestrians and let the Council know. I posted on our local forum and left it at that. I haven't got the time to go hunting down the owners of dead cats.

You can't know because you never tried. It takes weeks or longer to train an animal, or for it to adjust, not days.

How do you know what I have or have not done?!

Sorry, I don’t care about the cat owners who let their cats out because they don’t seem to care about birds and other wildlife that their cats kill.

I've a neighbour with 3 cats who roam freely. My three are indoors. We agree to disagree! I don't believe she actively doesn't care about the birds etc they kill, in fact I know it upsets her, but she prioritises the happiness of her cats as she sees it.

I'm fond of her cats although two of them in particular are killing machines, and I'm often to be seen trying to prevent further murders in my garden. I'd be v upset for her if any of her cats was killed on the road.

I probably wouldn't pay for a taxi (I drive anyway), but I would and have responded to these types of posts on Facebook. The last episode was a bit traumatic tbh, the cat had passed and was not in a good way (thankfully, cat was chipped, owners werw located, we met up), but I have cats, and if that had happened to one of mine, I know how utterly grateful I would be if someone did that for me. I've got my ds out of bed in the mornings on occasion to fetch/take a casualty to the vet. If I know about these kind if incidents and I'm able to help, I just would. I'd feel terribly guilty if not, it would be on my mind for a long time after.

I take it there’s no tag on the collar with contact details? I thought that was the whole point of having a collar. Completely unreasonable for anyone to be giving you abuse over not taking it to a vet to be scanned. If it bothers them that much they should be doing it themselves not blaming someone else who can’t

You implied it in your post.

None of my cats wear collars. They're climbers - and I've seen quick release collars fail. They are microchipped though.

YANBU at all.

A couple of years ago I sadly ran over and killed a cat, I took it to the vet then as it was my responsibility to do so.

If I saw a dead cat on the street / road and was able to do so, I would take it to the vet. If I didn't have a car then I wouldn't. No way would I fork out for a taxi. And I say this as an avid cat lover. Absolutely bonkers.

You did more than enough OP for finding someone who was able to help.

I don't believe I did. I don't think I fully shared a lifetime of having many many cats?

I hate collars on cats! I've only ever had one cat that was willing to wear one. He had a cute dicky bow from Harrod's for a while! 😎He was ginger and he looked so cute! I only put a collar on him because he was a roamer and back then people assumed that cats without collars didn't have an owner (we're talking 30 years ago!!)

YANBU. I would not be able to deal with a dead cat, let alone take it in a taxi somewhere. I would saying where it is, and letting someone less squeamish deal with it.

Years ago, I hit a seagull with my motorbike. Someone on here told me to take it to a rescue... how? Put it in my pocket?

A few years ago,I was sitting at a bus stop near a large shopping centre. I noticed a young bird, probably a fledgling, hopping around under the bench seat nearby. A young woman sitting nearby also noticed it and said 'Do you think it's alright?'. I said 'The parents are probably nearby keeping an eye on it '. She replied 'I think you should take it home and look after it'. I was like WTAF?! Yes sure,I'll just stick it in my shopping trolley. I'm sure my 2 cats will love it!'. Madness!

cadburyegg · 02/11/2024 23:06

Also, a few years ago one of our cats was run over and killed and someone posted on our neighbourhood fb page much along the same lines as you OP, that she was sorry but had found a dead cat, she couldn't stop to take it to the vet but hoped someone else might. As it happens we saw the post and were able to retrieve him. I was grateful to the person for posting and never resented her for not being able to stop. I was glad she did post because if we had found him without her posting (which we would have because he was on the road leading out of our estate) it would have definitely been much more of a shock.

Mine were all feral kittens. Literally off the streets. I quite like the skin on my arms and face. I attempted to collar them all once. Never again TYVM.

OP said the cat is wearing a collar.
