People who wear masks incorrectly

Xjk · 25/10/2024 14:03

Why do some people still wear disposable masks just on their chins when in shops? Went on a bus with a man who wore one and just happened to be we both caught the same bus back and he was still wearing mask on chin

Either wear the mask PROPERLY - mouth and nose covered or like 99,9% don’t bother.

It's become a bit of a comfort blanket for some people.

If they're wearing them wrong, they're probably not bothered about the spread of germs.

Social anxiety seems to be very common now, so they probably just want to be able to cover their faces when they feel they need to.

Have I slipped through a time warp?

Xjk · 25/10/2024 14:14

My friend works in retail and sees people (always elderly) wearing masks loosely. Apart from it serves no purpose, they look stupid.

Or they could be immuno-supressesd, and a cold or chest infection couldhospitlaise them, (like me)

Honestly the amount of people who give me dirty looks or outright make jeery remarks or demand to know why i dare wear a mask in public

I tell them to jog on lol

But if they are wearing the mask underneath their nose it’s not protecting anyone 🤦‍♀️

The op is taking about people wearing masks incorrectly.

Richiewoo · 25/10/2024 14:53

I don't understand why people still wear masks. Waste of time.

So did I 😆

timenowplease · 25/10/2024 14:58

I voted YABU because they're useless no matter how they're worn.

TeaAndBrie · 25/10/2024 15:03

Or masks outside, on their own, in the (clean countryside and not city) fresh air?!

So your complaint is that some (mostly elderly) people “look stupid”? People wear all kinds of pointless and weird looking crap, most of it in the name of “fashion”. Who cares?

People can look however they want. They can look “stupid”. They can wear a mask like an earring on each ear if they want to. Unless they’re breaking actual rules in eg in a hospital setting or in some way hurting you just let people wear what they want and quit being a judgemental ass.

REP22 · 25/10/2024 15:08

Agree with you OP. For some reason it annoys me intensely.

Why does it bother you sp much ?
Nobody is asking you to wear a mask

I won’t talk to someone wearing one unless it’s a dentist or the lady in the nail bar.
Sorry I want to see your face if you want my attention.

Walkacrossthesand · 25/10/2024 15:12

Maybe there's a logic to having it under your chin so you can pop it into place when you get near someone - but you never see them doing that do you?

Yes, of course people can wear what they like - but I suspect they think it's doing some good, which is sad

Zimunya · 25/10/2024 15:14

I don't have any issue with people wearing masks - absolutely their choice - but I agree with the OP that there's absolutely no point wearing them as a chin strap.

Lawqo · 25/10/2024 15:18

I sometimes wear one, helps with my confidence/anxiety then as I feel more I often remove it and leave it on one ear or below chin before fully taking it off.

Yep, this always struck me during Covid. We'd get the elderly (who most needed masking, IMO) but they'd have their masks loose or under their noses just covering their mouths. Apparently it 'made it easier to breathe' when I asked. I don't know quite what they thought the point of the mask was...

In that case, wear a proper mask correctly, as opposed to under their chin as per the OP’s post.

Agreed.

Either wear one properly or don't bother. Otherwise, what is the point?

I do give people a wide berth that are wearing them though because I figure they're probably the ones that are ill and I don't want to catch it!

Xjk · 25/10/2024 16:01

When masks were compulsory, I often see people wearing those nasty blue disposable masks and said they can't breathe in them as they had nose above it. Why didn't they test out a different kind?

I struggle with those masks and had to get authorisation from a senior doctor to wear my own when I had a colonoscopy about 2.5 years ago as the hospital demanded that I wear that type.
