To be so sick of AI!

It’s everywhere and it’s awful! On a personal level, taking over my FB feed with nonsense, fake images that are just annoying, irritating platitudes… the first thing you get on an internet search is a load of Ai content scraped from all over so you have no idea what you are reading and can’t begin to credit a source if researching etc. it’s basically theft, as I see many are now petitioning to point out.
And it’s terrifying for what it is likely to do to the jobs market and all sorts of other Black Mirror type things my brain can’t fully imagine but I’ve no doubt are coming. Yesterday my boss had an email from a company with an AI plan to do what I do, explaining all the things they could offer. We all had a good chuckle about it because it totally lost all the nuance of the actual role involved but for many this will become reality. It all feels nightmarish quite frankly. I’m sure there are some good things but struggling to see many. Medical ones come to mind, I suppose. But wanted to rant, so ranting 😂

I dont know, I’m thinking this post was written by AI..?

Missingpate · 23/10/2024 07:48

Ha really? That’s worrying! 😂

I might be totally missing it but I don't think I have any noticeable contact with AI, my Facebook is all groups I'm in and very poorly targeted suggested other groups

malificent7 · 23/10/2024 07:59

I get you op. All those perfect pictures and conversations with algorythms.
What is scary is that some can't spot it.
" wow what an amazing cake...so talented!"

SensibleJaneAndrews · 23/10/2024 08:00

I just saw a relationship advice thread on here with some truly dreadful advice written by AI. So YANBU

KizzyDora · 23/10/2024 08:08

Thought this was going to be about a holiday. Disappointed.

MrSeptember · 23/10/2024 08:08

The Google search AI is very helpful. Allows you to cut through a lot to get an overview. Then you dig further for specific sources. I use chat GPT in the same way.

Algorithm figuring out what I like and showing me that first? Great, all for it.

AI in work should make.many of.our lives easier..automating repetitive mundane tasks, spotting errors etc. There may well be that some roles will become defunct or have to change but that's the result of natural progression. When I started working, a secretary or PA was needed for almost everyone and a team PA only looked after a few people. Nowadays, only very big cheeses have their own PA and team PAs are looking after much more people ans doing v different things. That's because technology changed the needs of the role.

abracadabra1980 · 23/10/2024 08:08

I had a conversation with a tecchy customer recently and he said he could imagine the day when people will opt to 'live in a virtual world'. I was horrified. I didn't even like those 3D glasses when they first came out.

TeenLifeMum · 23/10/2024 08:10

Dh’s company is restructuring and one team wasn’t going to hit their deadline so they planned to shove everyone’s applications (applying for their own jobs) into AI to pick the successful candidates. They’ve been stopped but it’s horrifyingly cold.

Lol so did I

But I agree. I watch a lot of social media about birds, and recently I've noticed new videos are AI.

I know because they can't yet get bird flight right, the movements are easily noticeable as wrong to anyone that is interested in birds- but not to a regular person.

ApricitySeeker · 23/10/2024 08:11

What I find most worrying is the amount of people that don’t realise it’s AI. There was a Facebook page I was following for a while until all the content changed to really (in my opinion) very clearly AI photos, mainly of young couples in black and white and a comparison photo of ‘now’ and a caption of something like ‘together 50 years and still going strong’ or something similar and literally all the comments underneath were ‘congratulations!’ ‘Beautiful photo’.

Missingpate · 23/10/2024 08:12

Thanks for the replies. It’s an interesting debate and I am first to admit being a bit of a tech dinosaur. But overall it does make me uncomfortable.
And I do hate those awful fake images!
I work in a creative industry and we are definitely somewhat on the defensive about it. We also get people asking us to state in contracts that we won’t use it so clearly others are too. It will be interesting to see what evolves.

Totally agree @Missingpate . I'm in a creative industry too. I can see it changing my job. It's begun to creep in a bit this year (although the results after the initial excitement were, shall we say... pretty unimpressive. The amount of editing needed was insane).

I'm honestly hoping I am old enough that I'll be finished with work by the time it really begins to creep in, but I am beginning to doubt it 😕

Surf2Live · 23/10/2024 08:20

I'm already using AI in my business to make some writing tasks easier and quicker. But I still employ a small team and so far AI can't do what they or I do.

I'm a market analyst with 16 yrs experience, the analysis I do is highly specialised. I've tried to get AI to do what I do and so far it comes up with utter bollocks. I expect it may be at least a year away from me being able to train it to do it right.

I'm going to embrace this change, I'm looking forward to it. Once I can train AI to do what I do then the number of markets I can cover can increase substantially. I will still need my analysts to oversee all work, but my clients will have a much greater service from me , I'll be able to charge less per market and make more money. Win win for me and my clients while still employing my staff.

Now, if I were more pessimistic I would look at AI and know that eventually it will be able to do my job and feel threatened, and that could be where my thinking would shut down. But I choose to see opportunity and think about how I can utilise it for my business.

The rate technological of change is increasing, but there's always been change. From electricity, to computers, now AI. At each step there have always been job losses, but also new job creation.

You can choose to embrace change and see opportunities, or you can choose to rail against it. But change will come no matter how you feel about it.

If the total amount of human work required for society to hum along is reduced that could be a good thing if we manage to distribute work and resources so everyone has enough, but that's a political issue, not technological.

AngelinaFibres · 23/10/2024 08:32

AI is far, far better at spotting tiny anomalies in mammograms that were missed by humans. It is an incredible tool.
Your boss may have chuckled at how ridiculous it would be for AI to do your job. That possibility will have been filed away in their brain for a year or too.

Skunkaniseed · 23/10/2024 08:34

I agree with you. Google is wholly unusable now.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 23/10/2024 08:37

Try being a teacher who just wants to mark essays that were actually written by the student rather than ChatGPT…

Goldpanther · 23/10/2024 08:38

Totally agree, Google AI summary is usually generated from people's opinions on Reddit!
So many recipes on Facebook, photos are obviously generated, and so are the actual recipes!!

I do use AI in my work to produce templates, or to rephrase something I have written, but it still needs human interaction to check it and remove any errors!

MrSeptember · 23/10/2024 08:40

No, Google summary is not generated from reddit. Honestly, I despair at the lack of understanding.

whatsthatwordagainfeet · 23/10/2024 08:42

It’s scary how fast the AI photos/videos have improved in just a couple of years. They will surely get to a point where it’s impossible to tell it’s AI.

MermaidMummy06 · 23/10/2024 08:48

AI needs to mature aot before it's real AI & actually useful.

What's driving me insane is DH insisting on using AI to create our holiday itinerary. I had to wait 6 weeks for him to finish farting around with it, as he wouldn't be deterred, to do it properly. It was ridiculous. Now he wants AI to plan our day itineraries. Nope. He'll do it anyway so I'll just work on it quietly. Fighting it is exhausting. I think I preferred it when I did ALL the planning & DH just turned up and asked where we were going..... Now it's like he has a new toy that beats my 20+ years of travel experience!!

Goldpanther · 23/10/2024 08:49

MrSeptember · 23/10/2024 08:40

No, Google summary is not generated from reddit. Honestly, I despair at the lack of understanding.

Not all Google is generated from Reddit.

Google/Reddit do have a deal when Google uses Reddit data and in return Reddit is in more search results!

Can't believe people are oblivious to this!

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 23/10/2024 08:49

I've noticed it on my YouTube feed in the imagery and voices.

LifeofBrienne · 23/10/2024 08:52

Combining different sources into an AI Google search overview removes the option to assess which of the sources are trustworthy.

The only time I actually looked at it rather than scrolling past, it was crap anyway. I’d searched for something like ‘autumn flowering plants for clay soil’ and the list included daffodils.

More seriously, I think social media algorithms are quite frightening because people get used to having a stream of content selected for them and they are so easily manipulated to suit the platform’s political agenda.

DaemonMoon · 23/10/2024 08:59

AI has valuable uses. It can analysis masses of cyber data to look for patterns and anonamalies to stop state threats from taking out critical infrastructure. The uses in medical data will save lives.

But the recruitment sector now needs to change. I'm forever reading AI applications. Good or bad? Sometimes it's a leveller. Sometimes it enables cheats.

There needs to be rules, regulations and education.
