Should I give this guy my bank details?

Ok, I need some Mumsnet wisdom please.

I ordered a takeaway this evening on Just Eat. Only part of my order arrived (didn't realise til driver had left). I looked the restaurant up online to try and find a contact number, couldn't find one (very odd). The restaurant comes up on Google, they have a website etc and menu online, just no contact number. So I reported the issue on the Just Eat app and said some of my food was missing, got a notification saying a refund would be processed - great. I then reordered my meal on the app. In the meantime, I get a call from a mobile number I don't know, asking if I was missing some items from my order (yes) - he said it's the delivery driver's fault not ours, but because I've reordered my meal he says he will send me more of a refund for the inconvenience - so offered to send me an extra £10. He says I should text him my bank details and he will send this over.

Does this sound like a safe thing to do? For some reason I'm doubting this!

Don't do it. Not worth the risk for a tenner.

IronNeonClasp · 27/09/2024 19:55

No!

Just Eat just refund your account also btw - just get a refund for the goods not received.

TrampolineFox · 27/09/2024 19:55

I wouldn't but I'm very cautious

Yes, they will refund the missing item. But he's offered to refund more than that by bank transfer for the inconvenience.

Is it a very small business? It’s possible he doesn’t understand the ins and outs of Just Eat, they will refund your account. He doesn’t owe you a tenner so no need to give your details.

LadyGabriella · 27/09/2024 19:56

Not worth the risk.

justeatdrama · 27/09/2024 19:56

So the missing item was egg fried rice worth £4.50. He's offering to send £10 on top of that.

Sounds like it's tempting to you, but no I wouldn't do it just to be safe.

Too good to be true !

Tink3rbell30 · 27/09/2024 19:56

Yes, lots of takeaways take payment by bank transfer and use it to refund too.

Cosyblankets · 27/09/2024 19:57

No
I would just let it go

Mmhmmn · 27/09/2024 19:57

Mmm nah

Yes it is a small business, not like a chain type restaurant (at least I don't think so). It's relatively new, I haven't eaten there before.

If you’ve reordered ask for the refund in cash?

I sense you are tempted by the £10 for some reason but there is no reason for them to transfer it to you. If he wanted to apologise for the inconvenience he could send a free portion of chips or something innocuous with your re-order. I wouldn’t take 10 quid from him.

Singleandproud · 27/09/2024 20:00

That's a nice little scam being run by the delivery driver.
Gets to keep the food he didn't deliver and gets your bank details on top. No way would I do that. I'd ask for cash or not being bothered

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 27/09/2024 20:01

Possibly removed an item (and ate it himself) in order to contact you for your bank details...

Tell him you prefer it in cash...

Actually just ignore it.

It wasn't the driver who called me, it was the restaurant owner.

Just no.

IDontHateRainbows · 27/09/2024 20:03

What can he do with bank details to pay in ie sort code and acc number

He can't take any money out of the bank account

Wheres the scam?

MumDoingMyBest · 27/09/2024 20:06

He only said he was the owner. Why would you give a stranger (who also knows where you live) your bank account details?

£10 off your next order or a free starter would be more usual.

Ohnobackagain · 27/09/2024 20:07

@justeatdrama ask to collect it next time you’re in.

Olika · 27/09/2024 20:09

I wouldn't give my details. Sounds like he is trying to do the refund off Just Eat so that he isn't being penalised.

ScottBakula · 27/09/2024 20:09

That sounds very odd .
Why would the owner phone you ? I'd say its the delivery driver that's trying to con you. Just tell the 'owner' to give uou extra food or £10 in cash

Singleandproud · 27/09/2024 20:09

@justeatdrama how do you know he owns the restaurant?

This sounds like one of those parcel delivery scams where they order a laptop etc off Very to your address, then come and pick it up before you realize you haven't ordered it as it was delivered to you by mistake.
