Should I give this guy my bank details?

Ok, I need some Mumsnet wisdom please.

I ordered a takeaway this evening on Just Eat. Only part of my order arrived (didn't realise til driver had left). I looked the restaurant up online to try and find a contact number, couldn't find one (very odd). The restaurant comes up on Google, they have a website etc and menu online, just no contact number. So I reported the issue on the Just Eat app and said some of my food was missing, got a notification saying a refund would be processed - great. I then reordered my meal on the app. In the meantime, I get a call from a mobile number I don't know, asking if I was missing some items from my order (yes) - he said it's the delivery driver's fault not ours, but because I've reordered my meal he says he will send me more of a refund for the inconvenience - so offered to send me an extra £10. He says I should text him my bank details and he will send this over.

Does this sound like a safe thing to do? For some reason I'm doubting this!

Ok so the order is taking much longer to deliver than it says on the app (eta has just jumped up by an hour 😳), so my partner is going to drive over to collect the food in person. One way of finding out whether it's legit I suppose.

No. Don't do it, likely to be a scam. If they know your name, address and bank details it's enough to set up a direct debit.

MissUltraViolet · 27/09/2024 20:13

He can't do anything with your bank account number and sort code. Might just be a small business trying to keep people happy to prevent negative reviews.

I have had the bank details of all sorts of people over the years - people I have purchased pets from, cars, hairdressers, work men etc.

What can he do with bank details to pay in ie sort code and acc number

He can't take any money out of the bank account

Wheres the scam?

I agree. I think the restaurant owner being new probably doesn’t wish for negative reviews on Just Eat.

CoastalCalm · 27/09/2024 20:15

I’ve done this after complaining about a takeaway , they just sent me the money no big deal

justeatdrama · 27/09/2024 20:16

So they definitely can't scam me with my account name, sort code and account number?

Isittoolatea · 27/09/2024 20:17

I used it work for a major bank here for 15 years .
They can’t do anything with a sort code and account number.
I honestly think they just don’t want a negative review leaving and are trying to make up for the inconvenience.

MissUltraViolet · 27/09/2024 20:18

The only thing anyone could do with that information is set up a direct debit and if you use online banking then you would see it pretty quickly and if you did miss it the bank would refund you anyway.

So, no.

MumDoingMyBest · 27/09/2024 20:23

They also have your address and your telephone number.

They could phone up and pretend to be from your bank and trick you that way.
Or wait a few weeks and then set up a direct debit for a vague name and small amount which you might not notice (on the basis that someone who randomly gives out bank account details might not check transactions that regularly).

Don’t do it, why do you need the extra £10 for a bit of rice.

They can but you can just cancel it? My bank notifies me whenever I set up a direct debit so I'd be able to report it quickly as a scam, it's not the end of the world imo.

justeatdrama · 27/09/2024 20:27

So... update.

DP just collected it in person, guy was very apologetic and gave him a tenner in cash for the inconvenience. Said he's been having issues with delivery drivers all evening and has loads of bags of food waiting to be collected. That explains it! Was legit after all.

Well yeah but what if the money comes out, you're on a low income and it leaves you short? Not to mention the inconvenience of getting it stopped and money back. I'd rather not take my chances for the sake of a tenner.

justeatdrama · 27/09/2024 20:31

@HaveYouSeenRain
I don't "need" the extra tenner, but the guy offered it as a good will gesture for the inconvenience of having to reorder my meal and wait an extra hour and a half to eat my food. Which I felt was a kind gesture so I accepted but then panicked that it felt dodgy to send back details to a random mobile number. Hence my post.

I would still be wary if the same things happens the next time you order. Do not give them you bank details ever. Go to their premises and get it in cash if needs be. Do not share your bank details with them.

justeatdrama · 27/09/2024 20:42

DP has arrived with my meal plus the original rice that never arrived (see photo), plus a tenner in cash. Almost makes up for the food being nearly 2 hours late 😂

That’s lovely 🥰

Enjoy!

GiantHornets · 27/09/2024 20:48

In the old days, we paid by cheque which was printed with name, sort code and account number.
I don’t see how a scam would work, you’ve not given any access to your online banking

Cocothecoconut · 27/09/2024 20:54

Ding ding
No

Cocothecoconut · 27/09/2024 20:55

Oh wow
nice ( late) gesture

Singleandproud · 27/09/2024 20:00

That's a nice little scam being run by the delivery driver.
Gets to keep the food he didn't deliver and gets your bank details on top. No way would I do that. I'd ask for cash or not being bothered

What’s the scam with the delivery driver having her acc number and sort code? Not that the delivery man was even the one who asked for her details anyway…

Singleandproud · 27/09/2024 21:49

@loropianalover well 1) she didn't know for certain it was the restaurant owner, the delivery driver could easily ring up and fake that. Fortunately it was.
2) You don't think that a person could do any damage if they know your name, address, phone number and account details? Or could use that information to send phishing communications to get the rest of the information they need for identity theft?

Princesssuperstar · 28/09/2024 13:15

I wouldn't..... I'd ask for the 10 pound off my next order
