To ask which country you would not visit again and why?

I love hearing about travel experiences and am interested in knowing about places you have visited that you wouldn't go back to.

AIBU to ask which country you'd avoid in the future and what specifically made your experience less enjoyable? Was it due to culture, safety, or something else?

@Eastie77Returns

So sorry you experienced that. I thought the Apartheid Museum was amazing when I visited it. Along with Constitution Hill and Robben Island.

An essential visit to the history of South Africa.

Sadly, most people want to bury their heads in the sand about world politics.

Han1978 · 15/09/2024 20:48

Cuba or Egypt. I got so ill in both countries 🤢 couldn’t go back!!

Globules · 15/09/2024 20:48

Egypt.

Awful awful men who leer and swear at women walking alone if you ignore their comments and don't buy what they're selling.

I actually had one man follow me on a lonely path on an island in the Nile. I did a 180 to try to shake him off, and he copied my 180. I ended up yelling at him, and he got the hint.

I am never ever going back.

FlannySalopes · 15/09/2024 20:49

Tunisia.

HalloweenGrinch · 15/09/2024 20:49

Love Thailand (avoid the sex spots) and the rest of SE Asia.

Wouldn't go back to Aus. Cannot get the hype. Other than Tasmania, which was attractive, there was nothing that NZ doesn't do better and it is marginally less sexist and racist.

Visited Israel when I was young. Not planning to return.

Otoh I loved Morocco, Mexico, Spain and Turkey, all not enjoyed by PPs. You have to pick your spots in all of them, but that's the case anywhere right? Choose a big dirty capital, or a drug smuggling hub or a tourist honeypot and yes, it will probably disappoint.

Would not revisit Belize - one trip is enough to see almost everything. But I could go back to Greece every year and see something new and different. Europe, frankly, is amazing.

armadillio · 15/09/2024 20:49

New York. Horrible place, our supposedly 4 star hotel had bed bugs and towels weren’t changed despite requests. Sight seeing was meh, people were rude. Just felt cold all the time. Cold on top of Empire State Building. Cold whilst passing the Statue of Liberty in a ferry.

babyproblems · 15/09/2024 20:50

For me Turkey. Too many stray dogs and I found the men really letchy. Horrible.

Ive heard lots of people say LA is rubbish!

BlackForestCake · 15/09/2024 20:50

Reading all the appalling stories on this thread, someone needs to start up a country with no men.

Spongebobcircletop · 15/09/2024 20:50

I hated everything about Turkey. I loved Tunisia and went back a second time.

Thailand. I know most people love it but I felt a sleazy/sinister undercurrent everywhere. Older European men shouting at their female Thai “companion”, the live sex shows, dodgy men on mopeds zooming into you, drug dealers, stray cats and dogs roaming everywhere, surly hotel staff. Plus animal cruelty with elephants and monkeys being paraded at terrible roadside shows for money. Just felt like exploitation was everywhere, so depressing.

Also, won’t go back to the Caribbean- beautiful place, lovely people but just can’t get over being in a luxury hotel next to people living in tin shacks with no money. Then being told not to venture outside the security gates in case the same people decide to rob you, it just feels wrong.

We've been to Barbados (holetown) a few times and never once felt unsafe day or night when venturing out of our hotel. I'm interested in where in the Caribbean you felt unsafe dayswithaY?

Dubai - it's true that it's 'Milton Keynes in the desert'.

Oi, don’t knock Milton Keynes! My family live there and it’s really beautiful in parts. People who don’t know the place think it’s soulless but it has loads going for it, lovely parks and lakes etc. Would rather visit MK than Dubai for sure!

AltitudeCheck · 15/09/2024 20:51

I wouldn't return to Egypt as a solo female traveller. Unacceptable hassle from men, including being followed by a hissing/ catcalling man in Luxor at night which felt quite uncomfortable. Also the way I saw some donkeys and camels being treated was awful. Morocco & Tunisia were better although that may have been because I was with a man!

Russia... I didn't enjoy Moscow much, I found people unfriendly and unhelpful and the police are corrupt, I saw another tourist get his passport confiscated and made to pay a 'fine' (basically took all the cash in his wallet).

PearTreeCafe · 15/09/2024 20:51

Did you get mugged in Barcelona?

bluescreendot · 15/09/2024 20:52

Upthejunctionandroundthebend · 15/09/2024 20:29

Morocco because of the way they treat their horses and donkeys, everywhere, can't avoid it.

It's why we won't take our DC. They'd be horrified at the animal cruelty.

suburberphobe · 15/09/2024 20:52

Loved Cuba, loved Egypt. Amazing history, amazing vibrant culture.

Been to Dubai many many moons ago before the thing shot up in the sky.

Won't go now because the sheik has locked up two of his daughters never to be seen again

HalloweenGrinch · 15/09/2024 20:52

Oh and I agree about Dubai. Dull, way too hot and completely artificial. And terrible importation of labour from the Far East to support its artificialty- not the only place that does this but it has no redeeming features.

Fingeronthebutton · 15/09/2024 20:53

Egypt, China, Tunisia, Serbia.
if I could only have one it would be China. The most miserable people I’ve ever come across.
it didn’t bode well from the start when I was pushed ( aggressively) by a border guard at Shanghai airport.

NotStayingIn · 15/09/2024 20:53

Tunisia - absolutely awful, couldn’t move for men trying to assault you. I’ve travelled all over the world and this was another level. Never ever again.

Egypt I see has also gotten quite a few mentions. I loved it but had personal security in the form of a guy with an actual machine gun 😂. Funnily enough sleazy men don’t try it on when outgunned so it was bliss. (through work)

pasta · 15/09/2024 20:53

Tunisia, hassled by men the whole time

Australia, too far away, racist, fairly dull

Israel

I'd go back anywhere else though

dayswithaY · 15/09/2024 20:42

Bangkok and Koh Samui

I disagree. Na Mueang isn’t remotely sex touristy, it’s beautiful. I don’t think Lamai is awful either; some of the beaches are beauts. . Chaweng is grim but it’s known as a tourist area and easily avoided.

Bangkok is massive so unless you’ve done an every part of it it’s a massive insult to say that. Soi cowboy is vile though.

Tetchypants · 15/09/2024 20:54

Russia. Cold, massive, bleak. I wouldn’t mind seeing St P again but a weekend would be enough.

Ohmychristdawn · 15/09/2024 20:54

PetrichorSoul · 15/09/2024 20:21

Wales.

Got screamed at on a beach because their dog wanted our lunch. We weren’t near the dog, they just couldn’t control it. So they screamed at us for having food and daring to eat it.

Same holiday, got served “home made” soup multiple times in multiple establishments that was clearly from a packet. Complete with shrivelled dehydrated peas.

Awful holiday.

Seriously? Come on. You're writing Wales off cos of a bell-end dog owner? They're literally everywhere!

Dubai - it's true that it's 'Milton Keynes in the desert'.

That's an insult to Milton Keynes.

dustoffthebooks · 15/09/2024 20:54

North Wales. Miserable and borderline hostile.

bouncydog · 15/09/2024 20:55

Majorca - resort was filthy and raw sewage was being pumped into the bay where we were staying. DH was very ill.

Jamaica (was given marijuana by hotel staff unknowingly in my lunch)!! Our late night coach was also used by the driver and friends to rob a supermarket!! We were terrified.
