To ask which country you would not visit again and why?

I love hearing about travel experiences and am interested in knowing about places you have visited that you wouldn't go back to.

AIBU to ask which country you'd avoid in the future and what specifically made your experience less enjoyable? Was it due to culture, safety, or something else?

Lanzarote - too many cockroaches 🤢

I’m shocked by this as Japan is normally rated as very safe.

Not at all doubting the PPs post but it hasn’t been my experience and I have been to Japan, including Osaka, several times. The only time I was perved at was by a Caucasian business man on the train. Osaka is not my favourite city but that is for different reasons.

ohwhatadustyanswer · 15/09/2024 21:01

Came on here to say Tunisia without a doubt. Vile lecherous staring from men. Cafes and public places all full of men and no women. Unsafe feeling and got robbed on public transport. Disgusting coffee that tastes like motor oil. In the half-deserted resorts on the coast, sad older western women conducting “bezness” (basically paying for sex/fake relationships with) young Tunisian men.

Never had the chance but I'm afraid I wouldn't go to Australia because of the venomous wildlife. Hate spiders and snakes It also puts me off quite a few other countries as well. Shame as I'd love to have a cuddle with some kangaroos, koalas, wombats and some of the other lovely cuddly creatures they have

The wildlife is a lot more benign in Western Australia (and I suspect Tasmania as well).

DS did get stung by a jellyfish in Sydney, but that could happen anywhere.

GingerPirate · 15/09/2024 21:01

Italy, Calabria.
Absolute waste of time.

OliveTheaBough · 15/09/2024 21:01

I’m not overfussed about visiting America again.

Tunisia, felt unsafe out and about as a woman, even with my husband and brothers with me. Lots of shouting and touching from men in the markets. Just gross.

Parts of San Francisco felt really unsafe due to big drug problems there. Lots of men off their faces again shouting and not allowing personal space. I know plenty of people love it there, and it was only a specific part of town that felt like that, but it was scary.

Also parts of India, just because it’s a bit depressing being confronted with beggars in the street when you’re on holiday trying to enjoy yourself. Yes, it’s horribly sad, but I don’t pay thousands of pounds to get away from home and experience a different culture to feel guilty and depressed every time I leave the hotel. I’m there putting money into the local economy on trips, in shops and restaurants etc not to be fleeced every time we stop at traffic lights. Obviously I should have chosen a different location, I get that part of the real India is the deprivation, but it doesn’t make me want to spend my holiday there again.

Mum too found India incredibly hard - The absolute desperate poverty and the wide eyed children selling stuff.

Sorrelia · 15/09/2024 21:02

When did you all go to Tunisia ? I went when I was 20 as a solo traveller and stayed for 3 weeks, I never ever had any problem being harassed or men coming onto me. I wore a scarf on my head and long sleeves/long trousers though, maybe that saved me from it?
But yeah, no issue and I was alone everywhere, and we're not speaking nice hotels here but hostels on the suburbs of Tunis and Tunis itself. quite unsafe when I read about your experiences actually!

The only country I genuinely hated was Vietnam. Everyone I met was rude and horrible. It was awfully dirty and I am used to big bustling Asian cities, but this was just terrible, and not in a cool exotic kind of way. The pollution was so thick it burned my.mouth, I felt sorry for the locals living in this smoke. I had an amazing experience in neighbouring Myanmar and Thailand.

I will never set a foot in Vietnam anymore.

Planesmistakenforstars · 15/09/2024 21:02

India. Primarily because of the constant harassment.

Shoes232 · 15/09/2024 21:02

Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Would never step foot in the UAE again. Awful place

TealTraybake · 15/09/2024 21:02

Tunisia men
Morocco men
Turkey men
Cyprus dirty maybe I expected Greece but it’s nothing like Greece
Paraguay dirty soulless

To a lesser extent
Australia sexist brash
Spain aggressive unfriendly. Met some lovely individuals but ruined by others

Guavafish1 · 15/09/2024 21:02

New York… hostile immigration, dirty city, rude citizens and the poverty is striking for a superpower.

Madrid - dry and boring city.

dayswithaY · 15/09/2024 21:02

Everycloudect · 15/09/2024 20:50

We've been to Barbados (holetown) a few times and never once felt unsafe day or night when venturing out of our hotel. I'm interested in where in the Caribbean you felt unsafe dayswithaY?

If you re-read my post I didn’t say I felt unsafe in the Caribbean. The hotel staff told us not to venture out due to the crime. I felt uncomfortable being in a luxury hotel next to people living in poverty. Not unsafe.

It was Jamaica.

CeruleanBelt · 15/09/2024 21:02

Rhodes was shit. Hardly any culture, nothing to do, and the tiny donkeys being ridden up and down the hill in lindos by adults in the blistering heat made me feel sick.

theeyeofdoe · 15/09/2024 21:02

dayswithaY · 15/09/2024 20:32

Thailand. I know most people love it but I felt a sleazy/sinister undercurrent everywhere. Older European men shouting at their female Thai “companion”, the live sex shows, dodgy men on mopeds zooming into you, drug dealers, stray cats and dogs roaming everywhere, surly hotel staff. Plus animal cruelty with elephants and monkeys being paraded at terrible roadside shows for money. Just felt like exploitation was everywhere, so depressing.

Also, won’t go back to the Caribbean- beautiful place, lovely people but just can’t get over being in a luxury hotel next to people living in tin shacks with no money. Then being told not to venture outside the security gates in case the same people decide to rob you, it just feels wrong.

I think you either went a long time ago to the Caribbean, or a very poor island.
Antigua, Varbados, Grenada, St Lucia are nothing like that.

suburberphobe · 15/09/2024 21:03

@WateryBottle

I don’t personally put the UK’s undoubted race problem in the same category as South Africa but that’s probably for another thread.

I agree with you there.

But basically it's the same the world over. looking at you Trump

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 15/09/2024 21:03

Egypt
The way they treat the donkeys
Those adverts on Channel 5 voiced by the soothing tones of John Nettles for Brookes Animal Charity ( donkeys and horses ) are nothing compared to the real life horror that leave you angry but impotent because apart from donate (which I did) WTF can you do .
Except never set foot there again.

Another2Cats · 15/09/2024 21:03

SocksAndTheCity · 15/09/2024 20:27

+1 - I came on to post Egypt and also Jamaica (which I wouldn't have chosen but a friend got married there). I couldn't go anywhere without getting constantly harassed and it got old very quickly.

"... and also Jamaica"

I was about to say the same thing, but you beat me to it.

We've been to a couple of other Caribbean countries, Barbados and Antigua, and we found a big difference between those and Jamaica.

opaltimer · 15/09/2024 21:03

Egypt, as above.

A shame as I had some of the best experiences there-quad biking in the desert was amazing! The harassment from men and our tourist bus needing protection by armed guards means I won't be returning.

Pebbles16 · 15/09/2024 21:04

Lunamoon23 · 15/09/2024 20:59

Also agree with this one! It was so underwhelming I'd actually forgotten about it. Very little to do - we saw the whole island in one day. Very dull. Unless you like to lie on a beach all day everyday.

As a Portuguese speaker (probably niche), loved it. Space and solitude, connecting with the community and eating great food. But it's a week at most holiday

Mainoo72 · 15/09/2024 21:04

Abu Dhabi & Tunisia. Abu Dhabi was too hot, everything seemed fake. Hardly any women out in the restaurants. Just groups of men. Tunisia was dirty & smelt awful.

sharpclawedkitten · 15/09/2024 21:05

GingerPirate · 15/09/2024 21:01

Italy, Calabria.
Absolute waste of time.

I've not been to the far south but i don't think anywhere in Europe rivals Italy for cultural richness (and the food and wine are good and they don't have the late eating times of Spain).

Lunamoon23 · 15/09/2024 21:06

@Pebbles16 maybe that was one mistake, we went for two weeks and couldn't wait to leave. We like to explore a lot, so just found it very dull. X

poppyzbrite4 · 15/09/2024 21:06

I've travelled a lot and would never go back to Marrakech. Horrific place. I was followed, grabbed, hassled from the moment I stepped out the door. I took off early. I loved Morocco though.

NippyCrab · 15/09/2024 21:07

Tunisia, it was awful. As a woman and also because I was blonde (so I was told) I didn't get any peace from men it was very scary, the hissing urgh. I was always with my exh so never alone. Never again.
