To be amazed that people still haven't bought their school uniform?

Kids go back on Tuesday. WhatsApp Group is alive with "argh, I can't find X item" or "where can I get the book bag"?

As if it's been a complete surprise that their child is joining reception and the uniform shops and supermarkets have been closed since June...

Why would you leave it to the last moment?

Maybe they need to save up the money?

Maybe they've been busy.

LissyG · 01/09/2024 13:36

Pay day? Some people struggle as its a lot of spend.

FatmanandKnobbin · 01/09/2024 13:36

Because they have likely just been paid.

TyneTeas · 01/09/2024 13:37

Maybe had to wait til after payday

Blueybanditbingochilli · 01/09/2024 13:37

It’s school uniform not Oasis tickets

Star81 · 01/09/2024 13:38

If I had bought my uniform at the start of the holidays it wouldn’t have fitted them by now. However mine (apart from tie and blazer) can be bought easily.

LateDecemberLove · 01/09/2024 13:38

There are many reasons and you are just showing how fortunate you are by not being able to understand this.

snoopyfanaccountant · 01/09/2024 13:38

One of my DDs grew 3 inches over a summer holiday. If I had bought her uniform at the start of the holidays, it would have been too small.

ILovecamdenMarket · 01/09/2024 13:38

Financial reasons? I get mine in June but I'm weirdly organised most of my Christmas shopping is wrapped lol

Luckyblackcat13 · 01/09/2024 13:39

Why would you feel the need to smugly display your faux dismay online?

BabaYetu · 01/09/2024 13:39

Bought school uniform early summer first time. DC had a summer growth spurt. Left it as late as possible ever after.

LittleGreenDragons · 01/09/2024 13:39

Children have growth spurts so what fits in July won't fit in September. I would say it's a supply issue if they can't find anything now rather than a parent issue.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 01/09/2024 13:39

I buy any new uniform as soon as the holidays start, because I just get anxious that everything I need will be out of stock. I save through the year though so have the funds ready.

But then, I'm also the person who has all their Xmas shopping done by November. I just like to be early and organised.

I expect others are waiting for the end of Aug payday, having budgeted their July payday to cover the costs of the holidays

Needmorelego · 01/09/2024 13:40

A lot of people get paid at the end of the month - which was yesterday.
If you have to get stuff from one designated shop sometimes it's appointment only or you have to queue for hours (yes really) and not everyone can do that due to work commitments. Some of the school uniform shops I know of don't open Sundays 🙄
There's been a lot of uniform exchange initiatives the last couple of years - but usually run by volunteers who can only commit once or twice a month.
That's why.

AtomicBlondeRose · 01/09/2024 13:41

When I had two small DC who I took great pride in sending to school all clean and fresh I’d make sure I was completely on top of buying uniform and enjoy having the piles of polo shirts etc all folded and ready to go, shoes polished, the lot. Now as far as primary goes I have one DD going into year 6 and quite frankly I’ve had a cursory rummage through her uniform drawer, replaced skirts that were stupidly short and flung a few packets of shirts into my basket when Lidl had them for cheap, but I’m relying on her to tell me if she really needs anything else. So quite frankly I could now be one of those people trying to find something at the last minute (except I wouldn’t, because I’m wise now and I’d ask at school if I could take something from their substantial stock of second hand uniform instead). After a few years you get bored of it tbh.

sausageshello · 01/09/2024 13:41

It really is not that serious. There are still a few days before school starts and not everyone is as ultra prepared as you OP. I got mine a few days ago and it wasn't that difficult to find tbh.

Keepchangingyourname · 01/09/2024 13:41

I have just been to get sons shoes this morning 🤷‍♀️ I don’t think that makes me a bad parent but maybe I’m wrong.

reasons I went today include: 13 year old boys grow overnight- especially shoe sizes . Indeed he has a 8.5 size shoe bought today , but finished last year in a size 7 .
I only got paid on Friday, and I was at a wedding yesterday.

hope that helps

BehindTheSequinsandStilettos · 01/09/2024 13:41

Because I'm disorganised.
Because SEND son only gives me a small window of opportunity.
Because I've only just been paid.
So be amazed and jog on

Worldofflowers · 01/09/2024 13:42

This is quite a mean thread OP.

There are lots of reasons why people aren't as prepared as you are.

Given the cost of living crisis it's particularly unpleasant to shame people when the cause could be money related.

DixonD · 01/09/2024 13:43

I thought my daughter’s uniform still fitted until we tried it on last week - not so much 😂😂.

I ordered mine online (all logo’d stuff) and it arrived within 2 days. The rush is mostly over so I probably ordered at a good time.

LlynTegid · 01/09/2024 13:44

I am not surprised. Many people will have been away on a holiday, and that is even before some people who lack the ability to plan ahead. Almost in some cases a trait that you could classify, just as some people can never be on time (I don't mean those who just are rude and treat people's time as less important than them) and some people have no sense of direction.

It is the beginning of the month today, so could well be for some who get paid at the end of the month.

MasterBeth · 01/09/2024 13:45

I am super organised and I am amazed that everyone else I see is a chaotic mess.

Why oh why am I so fucking perfect?
