Doom day on holiday

peasandcarrots34 · 20/08/2024 07:56

Currently on a family holiday in Greece. Tomorrow is our final day and we have to be out of the room at 10am (no movement on this, already checked). We aren't getting picked up for our transfer until 6pm. We can use the pool facilities but I have a toddler and we've fallen into the habit of bringing her back to the room at various points during the day to escape the heat and have a rest.

I'm really regretting booking these flights now didn't think it would be a big deal at the time but I feel like tomorrow is going to be such hard work! Not to mention having to cart our luggage about with us all day. Any tips?

Talk to the hotel about leaving your luggage somewhere, keep a smaller bag with your bits for the day and treat it like a day trip.

FrenchandSaunders · 20/08/2024 07:58

Surely you can leave your luggage in reception?

Use the pool, wear her out a bit and try to get her to sleep on a sunbed under the shade. Find a nice air conditioned restaurant for lunch with the buggy.

Ohiwish12 · 20/08/2024 08:00

Can you ask the hotel if they have a later check out for you. And also if they have luggage storage if not so not lugging this about.

If too hot and don't want to be by the pool all day is there an air conditioned outlet mall nearby? We did this once on our day travelling home not because of heat but due to rain all day. Hung out at shopping mall, there was an indoor soft play for the kids. Had lunch etc then got taxi back ready for hotel transfer. Was able to leave suitcases at hotel.

Leave your luggage and go out - it’s most holidays.

We went to the beach has lunch then a last walk round the shops.

There might be air conditioned kids places like ball parks you could google -

Vanillabourbon · 20/08/2024 08:02

Can you pay for an extra night even though you won't be staying the whole night? It will be worth it just to be able to use the facilities.

spuddy4 · 20/08/2024 08:04

Most hotels have a luggage room and somewhere you can have a shower. I usually try and book a late check out but it might not be guaranteed in peak season.

Why don’t people read the OP?

Check with the hotel. You should be able to leave luggage with reception and there may be a courtesy room with a shower that you can use.

Use the pool for a few hours, visit local shops or play park, have a nice lunch, shower and change for the plane, play some games in the hotel lobby (hopefully air conditioned).

You just need to separate your packing so you have everything you need for the day and the plane journey easy to access.

It's doable and there will be lots in the same position as you.

Pickled21 · 20/08/2024 08:09

Do you travel much? I don't mean it to sound catty but this is the type of thing I would be concerned about and I don't travel much. Most hotels will happily keep a hold of your luggage if you have a flight later than check out. You just need to check with them though. I'd keep a separate bag so your nappy bag with a few extra bits that you can have to hand. Use sun loungers with parasols and assuming inside of the hotel has seating areas retreat there if it's too hot for the baby. It's your last day so might as well make the most of it. You could head out to lunch or explore whatever nearby the hotel.

I have never been in a decent hotel, which doesn't provide this. You will be up early, nab sun beds and a couple of parasols, camp out by the pool. Decent lunch, and you will need to get showered and dressed by about 4 pm. It's not ideal but will be fine.

HoppingPavlova · 20/08/2024 08:16

The hotel should be able to store your suitcases. Just pack a backpack for essentials for the day until you transfer to the airport and sort the bags/carry in a space in a corner of the hotel lobby or airport area before screening.

steadywinner · 20/08/2024 08:18

As others have said, you should be able to leave your luggage somewhere in reception, they usually have a locked room for this.

Just make sure you have your clean clothes/toiletries/chargers/anything the little one might need before you get picked up.

I would just treat it as a pretty normal day on holiday, but go out for a decent lunch as it'll be your main meal for the day. Maybe google nearby restaurants and check which have air con, and your toddler might nap there after lunch while you relax over a couple of coffees.

Back to the hotel mid afternoon, swim/chill on sun beds for an hour or two then get ready for pick up.

Createausername1970 · 20/08/2024 08:24

As others have said, check that you can leave your luggage with the hotel. That is very common. Just make sure you have everything thing you need for the day with you.

Another option might be to ask if there is another room you rent just for the day? They may have your room booked out straight after if it's a family sized room, but may have a smaller one available. If it's just to let your DC have a nap and escape the heat, you don't need a big room.

If not, then a long lunch in an air conditioned cafe might help.

I know this isn't helpful, but when holidaying with young DS we always booked the accommodation for the extra night. It just made things easier.

Conniebygaslight · 20/08/2024 08:27

Definitely ask the hotel, they’ll be able to store your luggage and may be able to provide a room that you can use, this will be chargeable obviously but well worth it.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 20/08/2024 08:30

This is very common, they will have a luggage store.

tennesseewhiskey1 · 20/08/2024 08:32

Nope - we had to check out at 11am and had a 1205am flight so I understand your pain!

HelenWheels · 20/08/2024 08:34

go to a shopping mall, have lunch

ClassicStripe · 20/08/2024 08:34

I've never stayed at a resort hotel where you cannot leave your luggage. They must have people in this situation every single day.

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/08/2024 08:34

Late check out? Or a day rate for that hotel or a different one.

CautiousLurker · 20/08/2024 08:35

Most hotels will store your luggage. Most I have stayed in also have courtesy rooms where guest can shower/change, sometimes for a charge but these have been free when i’ve been offered them. Usually they would have apprised you of this though once you checked check out details with them. I’d speak to reception.

Idtotallybangdreamoftheendlessnotgonnalie · 20/08/2024 08:35

Have a look on booking.com for cheap hotels in your area. We did this in Cyprus when we had a villa and a 10pm flight, think we got an apartment for the day for £35.

Legoninjago1 · 20/08/2024 08:36

Any possibility of changing the flight to an earlier one?

lemonmeringueno3 · 20/08/2024 08:37

Surely this is how it works on most holidays?

Leave your luggage in their luggage store and do something fun.

We don't like using the beach or pool on the last day, as not possible to properly clean up afterwards, so we usually do a shopping mall or an activity with a long lunch.

ThatAgileLimeCat · 20/08/2024 08:41

Just back from similar (not with toddler but have done it with toddler years back). 11am check out. Late night flight. Pack travel clothes into a carrier bag or on top of one suitcase. Get all hand luggage, liquids etc sorted and cases weighed. Get swimsuits on and pack a bag with suncream, towel, snacks etc. them leave everything except the day bag in hotels luggage room and head off to beach, pool, taverna (away from the heat) shops etc.

Back to luggage room and hour or so before pick up. Change in toilets, shower if available and all done. Don't lose a day of your holiday by being on "wait mode" all day.

longdistanceclaraclara · 20/08/2024 08:50

As others have said I've never been to a hotel that doesn't have facilities to leave your luggage after check out. Most have showers too. It's not a big deal at all.
