Starting to worry as it’s been around the area for other an hour now and is really loud and sounds right above me. AIBU to be scared? Live alone

99% certain nothing to be scared of. It could be up for a multitude of reasons. Missing or vulnerable person is most likely. If they're out chasing criminals the helicopter will be up for it's heat source. Anyone there looking for is far more likely to go to ground than break info a house for shelter. Their aim will be to get away

bergamotorange · 18/08/2024 01:49

I understand why it's unsettling, but logically speaking you're less at risk if the police are looking than if they're not aware there's someone they need to find.

I'd go and watch something calm on TV and hopefully it'll go quiet soon.

Tightfishedtwat · 18/08/2024 01:49

Nothing to worry about, you will be fine. They lift for all sorts of reasons. Crime to a missing person

sarahzbaker · 18/08/2024 01:55

They are just looking. Happens all the time over Hackney. Don't stress

alrightluv · 18/08/2024 01:56

Happens a fair amount near us. Try not to worry.

Sweetnessandbite · 18/08/2024 02:00

Your local social media may have updates as to why it is circling. I know it can be unsettling but it is probably looking for a vehicle or missing person, and whatever they are looking for will be trying to get away from your area.

Eviepeaaa · 18/08/2024 02:24

Thanks everyone. You have reassured me.

If its anything like my local FB there'll be a post about it followed by 70 folk saying its been above their house too 😂 with a few wild speculations thrown in

I remember years ago someone phoning the station I worked at complaining that the helicopter had been up for about 2 hours and he couldn't sleep. He was told that they were assisting in a search for someone to which he replied 'If they haven't bloody found him by now clearly they're not going to, land the damn thing & let people get to sleep'

Ahhh the public - always a joy

Tricho · 18/08/2024 02:49

Is it looking for you?

Jokes, I'm the same, I find flightradar good for this

Last time what I tbiughgt was a police helicopter was an air ambulance from Isle of Wight!

Edingril · 18/08/2024 03:51

Scared of what?

DreamTheMoors · 18/08/2024 04:13

Years ago my roommate and I heard the police helicopter flying low and very close to our house.
We went out the back door to look and there it was — and it shined its spotlight on us and a guy came on their loudspeaker and said:
”GO BACK IN THE HOUSE”
It scared us to death. lol

Eldest is in halls in Hackney and said the same.

We had a police car go past the house a while back with lights and sirens going, which is an event for us.

He just said, regular event where I live.

I think they also take the choppers up periodically to keep the engines ticking over, it’s not always something sinister. Although I find the noise of them a pain in the fucking arse.

Omg
What is the matter with everyone?
Conspiracy theorists, fear of a police helicopter, along with the 'my dh is ghosting me,,,'
It's like an agony aunt page from the 1930s.

😂😂😂😂😂
To keep the engines ticking over....
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Do you realise how much it costs each time it is used?
Omg, hilarious.
But I'll check with my policeman nephew; I may have missed a policy change....

My dad noticed that every wednesday night he heard helicopters above our property in north london. So he called the police station and asked why that was, there was an awkward pause before the officer said ‘wednesday is the day our station gets use of the helicopter’…

They get used regularly enough that the engines are well used. Our Force helicopter is routinely crewed about 18 hours a day & it's airborne for a lot of that time. They do go up for training & tasking but not usually in the middle of the night

Littletreefrog · 18/08/2024 06:57

We have the police helicopter over our house quite regularly the reasons are normally:
Event at the nearby stadium
Person on the nearby Bridge
Car chase on the nearby A road
Incident at the nearby coast
It has never been for something directly under the helicopter if you see what I mean and never been anything that could harm or affect me safely sitting inside my house.

No, that didn't happen

Coastalcreeksider · 18/08/2024 07:15

The minute anything at night featuring a helicopter happens where I live, FB and Next Door are usually full of people asking if anyone knows why the helicopter is up and which one it is, police, coastguard or air ambulance.

Whatever did people do before social media ... 🙄

Redglitter · 18/08/2024 11:15

FinalInstructionstotheAudience · 18/08/2024 07:01

No, that didn't happen

And IF it did the cop was clearly joking.

Yeah, that's definitely NOT how the Air Support Unit works 😂😂😂

EmeraldRoulette · 18/08/2024 11:18

@FinalInstructionstotheAudience it’s getting so that I don’t know if people are joking or trolling or bored etc.

FinalInstructionstotheAudience · 18/08/2024 12:47

It's the fact that people fall for such ridiculousness; use logic folks!

Rummly · 18/08/2024 12:54

A very long time ago a friend who’s dad was in the Met told me that their helicopters all have the call sign ‘India’ - India1, India2 etc.

Because they are in-de-air. I hope it’s true!

needhelpwiththisplease · 18/08/2024 12:56

Why would to be scared that emergency services are doing their job and are not looking for you in your house?
