Starting to worry as it’s been around the area for other an hour now and is really loud and sounds right above me. AIBU to be scared? Live alone

I was scared as I’ve seen it on the police programmes and the suspects run through peoples gardens etc to try and remain unseen. I live alone and I have a fear of someone being in my back garden and breaking in, it backs onto fields.

"I think they also take the choppers up periodically to keep the engines ticking over, it’s not always something sinister."

🤣🤣 fucking hell

LakieLady · 18/08/2024 13:50

The last time the police helicopter was flying over my estate, they were looking for a missing child.

The "missing" child had gone to visit her granny, less than a mile away, but granny hadn't let the mother know, and the mother hadn't thought to check.

Worry wont do you any good in this situation. Bizarre thread...

If its anything like my local FB there'll be a post about it followed by 70 folk saying its been above their house too 😂 with a few wild speculations thrown in

I remember years ago someone phoning the station I worked at complaining that the helicopter had been up for about 2 hours and he couldn't sleep. He was told that they were assisting in a search for someone to which he replied 'If they haven't bloody found him by now clearly they're not going to, land the damn thing & let people get to sleep'

Ahhh the public - always a joy

LMAO

Same on my Nextdoor App

Don't worry OP, round here in lawless SE London, a police helicopter is a regular thing,

I think they also take the choppers up periodically to keep the engines ticking over, it’s not always something sinister. Although I find the noise of them a pain in the fucking arse.

That's hilarious.

The helicopter isn't avaiable very often when it would be useful, and every launch has to be carefully considered against costings.

Grin at the idea they just go for a spin every now and then.

AmIHereReally · 18/08/2024 14:57

I reckon I hear them once a month in my part of London. It doesn’t remotely bother me.

BobbyBiscuits · 18/08/2024 14:58

In my area they are around all the time. They're looking for someone who's fleeing in a vehicle or surveilling something. The likelihood of an axe murderer bursting through your door will not increase because you can hear or see a helicopter. If anything it shows the police are trying to catch criminals which we feel seems so low on their priorities these days.
The noise is annoying though.

ShuvieTupya · 18/08/2024 15:05

They do do training exercises but not usually in the middle of the night. Look on flightradar and you'll spot air ambulances, coastguard and privateers up in the skies as well. The Police ones often dont appear though.

jesus.. do you have any idea how much it costs to just take off and land in one of these thing? this is hilarious!! seriously made me chuckle!

next time i'm at work and we ask them to lift, i'll remind them not to charge us as they are 'just keeping it ticking over'

as for OP being scared... start worrying when its shines its light on your house, and then the men with guns and the land sharks show up... thats when you worry 😂😂😂

HauntedbyMagpies · 18/08/2024 19:42

WTF?!?! Why on earth would anyone be scared because a police helicopter is circling overhead?!?! The mind absolutely boggles 🤯

HauntedbyMagpies · 18/08/2024 19:45

@ConstantlyFuriosa 🤣 THOUSANDS of pounds per HOUR to run a police helicopter 🤣🤣🤣🤣

camelfinger · 18/08/2024 19:46

It would be good to find out the statistics of why they do get used. On our local FB pages people are drooling at the hope it’s a gunman or a knife man, determined to state how this place has gone to the dogs. I can sense the disappointment when it turns out that they are out looking for a vulnerable person.

Our Force chopper used to be like that. The duty Inspector had to approve requests for it to be requested. Not now, we treat it like any other resource & can ask for it for anything we or the cops at scene think it can help with. Usually if we request it they'll go up, sometimes they hear something or see a call on the system & volunteer to help

So very different from years ago

I'm afraid you have been found op! What double life have you been leading?

I live alone and this has happened to me!
2 officers knocked on the door and said they had chased a suspect over the fences of our terraced gardens and could they bring him through the house now they caught him.
I said fine and they brought him through. Very polite young guy who apologised to me for the fuss!😂

But don't worry about the helicopter OP. They are usually looking for someone who has already done the crime......it's before it gets there you should be concerned about!

This, although not particularly annoying in the day. More when they are hovering over my road at 2am.
