Not sure if I’m being overly cautious but wouldn’t want to risk not reporting it?

I regularly go over the bridge that runs over j29a of the m1. Very high bridge that looks over the motorway. Just gone past and there’s a young lad maybe 16/17 sat on the pavement with his legs up, elbows on his knees and covering his face with his hands. He looks like he’s stressed. He’s dressed all black with his head up. I just feel uneasy that he’s sat on the pavement like that so close to the bridge? What would you do?

Sorry. With his hood up

I would ring personally.

Telemichus · 12/08/2024 21:26

i don’t think it would do any harm to cal, the police tbh. I think they’d rather know before than after.

UpUpUpU · 12/08/2024 21:26

Get off here and call the police! It could be too late now.
Better a call and it’s a waste than not call and see on the news he jumped

itsmylife7 · 12/08/2024 21:26

yes call police

NotTooOldPaul · 12/08/2024 21:26

Phone 999. He might be suicidal. It will help him if he is and do no harm if he is OK

Abigaillovesholidays · 12/08/2024 21:27

Phone non emergency police number and they can decide

newtothenet · 12/08/2024 21:27

Ring it through on 999. If it's a false alarm they won't mind but if he's in trouble they have specially trained officers who can help him.

sonofrageandlove · 12/08/2024 21:27

Absolutely call them, can you go back and talk to him?

Telemichus · 12/08/2024 21:27

Or if you’re able to walk back & ask if he’s okay, but I would also call the police.

DivergentTris · 12/08/2024 21:28

I'd be asking if he's OK, any doubt 999, can't believe your on here instead!

BaffledOnceAgain · 12/08/2024 21:28

Call the police and go back.

Dreamingofthishouse · 12/08/2024 21:28

Yes definitely ring for a welfare check !

Mummyratbag · 12/08/2024 21:28

I would ring it in absolutely and if safe go back till police arrive

mytuppennyworth · 12/08/2024 21:28

I also vote police, better unnecessary callout than a missed opportunity to prevent a jump

prawncocktail2 · 12/08/2024 21:29

I was driving and there wasn’t really anywhere to pull in but I have now got to where I was going and it’s not far away at all so presume he’s still there . I just thought I’d ask because I know he could just be sat there but I’m rather be safe than sorry. A few other motorists noticed I think and were looking

Namenamchange · 12/08/2024 21:29

call the police and go back and talk to him

baggieAnn · 12/08/2024 21:29

I called 101 for a very similar thing last week and I wasn’t the first to call. Several police turned up quickly and it was taken seriously

Gonk123 · 12/08/2024 21:29

Could you not stop and ask? Or were you on the motorway?
I would def ring for help if not - 999 for sure, always better to be safe, it’s not a prank call is it. Hopefully they will go and see that he is no longer there with a bit of luck. Or they will find him and help him …either way you’ve done nothing wrong.

Mummyratbag · 12/08/2024 21:31

Also police would far rather a wasted trip (not wasted really) than have to deal with the harrowing potential consequences.

Honestlynotsure · 12/08/2024 21:31

FFS CALL 999 NOW!

tsmainsqueeze · 12/08/2024 21:32

Absolutely ring 999 , i would want someone to do this if it were my son and i wouldn't hesitate if i saw someone in the same situation.

Wordsmithery · 12/08/2024 21:34

Go and talk to him until police arrive. You caring could make all the difference

Shitlord · 12/08/2024 21:36

Do it please. They can do a welfare check. Might be a budding civil engineer thinking about the bridge's structure or just contemplating getting out of Derbyshire but better safe than sorry xx

prawncocktail2 · 12/08/2024 21:36

I’ve rang it in. They’re attending as an emergency
