To order in food to a hotel?

Heading off to spend a week in a hotel whilst undergoing radiotherapy. Not enthralled about the hotel menu (nor the prices). Is it totally wrong/chavvy to order in food from somewhere like just eat? Very limited mobility so no real options to eat elsewhere without taxi costs etc.

Not at all, but I'd check with the hotel first as some won't allow it.

Its quite common in some hotels with them evening providing menus for nearby places.

However others, particularly those with their own restaurant, don't allow it.

Perhaps explain your circumstances.

It doesn't matter what they 'allow', if you get it delivered to just outside the hotel.

No-one's going to chase you down and make you spit it out 🤣

If you want to hide it, just meet the deliverer outside and bring a shopping bag.

I have done it in a few hotels although always met the delivery person outside and brought it in lunch bag in a shopping bag.

Nope, just order it to be delivered outside the hotel and walk it up to your room

If it wasn't for the fact that a lot of takeaway food stinks to high heaven and lingers, that would be the perfect plan.

Don’t give it a second thought. They can’t police what you eat- though they may make delivery onto the premises difficult - so make sure you’ll be well enough to make it out onto the street to collect. Make sure you have lots of bottled water, juices etc in your room, and lots of snacks, in case there are evenings when you can’t get out.

It sounds like you’re going to be dealing with this alone? Sending you love and strong wishes. (And a week of 5* takeaway experiences!)

They don't put sniffer dogs on reception.

Honestly, the staff aren't half as bothered as some people might think.

Years ago I checked into the Brighton Hilton with fish and chips hidden in my rucksack. The lady on reception kept saying she could smell vinagre! Good luck with your treatment and enjoy your takeaways!

@JabbaTheBeachHut Hotel staff for many years here, and yep I agree some absolutely aren't bothered at all, other hotels are bothered enough to threaten a fine as they would do for smoking in a room.

One I worked in regularly had soft furnishings and carpets ruined by pissed up guests bringing Indian food back from the takeaway next door (not to mention the curtains stinking of jalfrezi for days) so they banned takeaways in general, but if someone in OP's situation had spoken to the hotel we'd likely have made reasonable exceptions.

I wouldn't think twice about doing this. You've paid for the room, you aren't obliged to eat their food as well.

If I'm paying for the ritz and I want a dirty donner then I would have no qualms about it. The concierge would probably order it.

I've done it a few times and never had an issue or thought anything of it.

That's weird because nearly every hotel I've been to, including the cheap ones like IBIS, do room service.

Therefore they're happy to 'allow' people to eat in their rooms.

I've yet to see a sign in any hotel, threatening to fine guests for eating in their rooms.

Thanks all, I’ve sneaked in a chicken and bacon pasta salad for tonight! Had my first treatment so feet up, cuppa coffee, massive king size bed and a packet of biscuits to myself - all good so far 😀

I've done it loads of times and I'm sure plenty other people do. I'm sure if you are discreet and don't make a mess they won't mind. Think when we got an Indian we double bagged and tied the containers to avoid smell when we'd finished.

I hope you are ok, is it your choice to be there on your own or didn't you feel there was anyone you could ask?!

It's not wrong or chavvy (even if it was, so what, needs must!!). I haven't 'ordered in' because I'm usually overseas & my language skills are usually too lacking, but have no qualms about taking in good, even freshly cooked pizza!!

I have known people thrown out for doing this. Check your T&Cs on the booking. Stinks the place out and housekeeping find disposing of the used containers a pain in the arse.

Last time I went away the hotel had a restaurant and loads of people were waiting outside for their Deliveroos. Totally normal.

I don't imagine the food smells any stronger than the food you can get through room service?

@JabbaTheBeachHut Room service menus are typically (not always) designed avoiding things that smell strongly or stain if spilled.

Thus the popularity of club sandwiches & Caesar salads on room service menus.

I do it all the time.

My DS works as a pizza delivery driver and sometimes delivers to hotel guests.

A former colleague used to take her slow cooker and airfyer to premier inns and knock up a full home cooked dinner cos 'Terry will only eat MY cooking'.
