Will this have ruined the microwave? Please help huge row with DP

DP has ran the microwave with nothing in it, to ‘entertain’ dd 3 so she could watch it go round. Will this have damaged it? I am worried it won’t work properly now and it is used sometimes for Dd’s food

No

HappySeven · 04/08/2024 18:10

It will be fine.

JackRabbitSlim · 04/08/2024 18:10

...no.

CuriousGeorge80 · 04/08/2024 18:10

Why would it have damaged if?

sesquipedalian · 04/08/2024 18:10

Why don’t you put a glass of water in it and see if it heats up? If it does, it’s still working…

LunaNorth · 04/08/2024 18:11

No, but I wouldn’t be encouraging using potentially dangerous kitchen equipment as playthings.

Halaaal · 04/08/2024 18:11

It says online it can damage it

Presume he didnmt do it for twenty minutes? Should be fine and there's a very easy way to check.

Flossyts · 04/08/2024 18:13

Im not sure you need to have huge row over a microwave. Just check it works🤷‍♀️. If it doesn’t, no biggie- we all make mistakes.

Topofthemountain · 04/08/2024 18:13

If you run it with nothing in it then the glass pyrex plate that is inside will explode with dramatic effect.

The plate will be rendered useless, but the microwave will live on.

You will still enjoy your Christmas lunch.

Catza · 04/08/2024 18:13

Instead of going online to search if it hypothetically can be damaged this way, why not turn it on to see if it has. I am really not sure this warrants a "huge row"

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 04/08/2024 18:14

Lots of toy microwaves on Amazon …

Sunshineafterthehail · 04/08/2024 18:16

I would worry about his parenting if he thinks that's the best thing dd can play with

Noname99 · 04/08/2024 18:16

yes it can damage it as there is no food to absorb the microwave so you can damage the internal walls as they have to absorb the full microwaves and so can heat up. Its very unlikely to do permanent damage unless he ran it for a very long period. But I’d suggest he finds another way to entertain your child!!

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 04/08/2024 18:16

I do think it’s a daft and pointless things to do, and potentially dangerous if done for too long.

The energy goes somewhere, presumably.

What a bizarre way to entertain a 3 year old.

Wingedharpy · 04/08/2024 18:25

Was it for her quantum physics lesson?
I hope he explained about dipolar rotation and ionic conduction as she was watching.
If nothing else OP, you can't accuse him of leaving her "in front of a screen" all day.
😉
The man is either a genius or a fool.

My 3 year old loved the microwave

GeminiGiggles · 04/08/2024 18:46

Perhaps suggest the washing machine (with laundry, washing powder or liquid and conditioner if so desired inside said machine) as an alternative form of entertainment?

Isobel201 · 04/08/2024 18:49

I've ran my microwave with a bit of butter in foil for 20 seconds before realising it was metal, to this day its still working fine.

Bunnyasmyname · 04/08/2024 18:51

I'd be more concerned how this turned into a huge row.
Are arguments over stupid things normally so heated?

Pigeonqueen · 04/08/2024 18:53

Are we talking for 2 minutes or an hour? Either way I’m sure it’s fine really. Very odd choice of entertainment though!

ActualChips · 04/08/2024 19:00

How can a huge row happen over that? Like, how did it go?

'did you run the microwave with nothing in it?'
'yeah.'
'you bastard'
Confused

Then, when she's bored of that, sit her on the hoover while he pushes it from room to room over every carpet in the house.
