Lighthearted - Why does MIL leave my toilet seat up!

Lighthearted post! Just curious as to what other people might think the reason is. And no, I won't be asking MIL as it's not a big deal and I don't really care.

Everytime my MIL uses our toilet, she always leaves the toilet seat up. I have never noticed her doing this before. Probably only started a few months ago. My DH NEVER ever leaves the seat up so it's not like she's putting it back to how she found it. She definitely doesn't have a penis as she birthed DH so I am just so confused! Any ideas?

She definitely doesn't have a penis

Well, you already answered my first question. Barring a penis, I can't imagine why she would do this.

We have a lady at work who does this! I am as confused as you.

MatildaTheCat · 03/08/2024 15:22

Is she squeamish about loo seats so raises the seat and hovers?

Either that or she’s perfected the art of weeing whilst standing. Or she gives the loo a thorough clean after each use?

Interesting to hear that othe women do it to! I've never noticed a seat up in her house so I don't even think FIL does this. He certainly doesn't leave it up in our house.

Definitely doesn't clean the toilet after use. Interesting about the hovering, it could be that although she's not a clean freak.

Well do you mean the bit your bum goes on or the lid?

if it's the lid then I leave mine up if it's the seat then idk maybe shes a hoverer or something 😂

scalt · 03/08/2024 15:23

Perhaps she uses a toilet brush afterwards, and doesn't bother to put the seat back down.

Or her husband insists that she leaves it up, for his benefit.

Or she's from Mars, instead of from Venus.

We don't own a toilet brush so definitely not that. I don't think FIL insists as he doesn't do this in our house. Must be the mars/venus thing!

I mean the bit your bum goes on! She leaves that lifted up so the toilet is like a man has done a wee! So weird!

I expect she hovers!
Maybe she wants to avoid sprinkling while she’s tinkling?
I hover in public toilets. It’s the thing these days, don’t you know.

SplishSplashSploshes · 03/08/2024 15:33

I had a relative that used to do this as she had a bag (forget the technical term) instead of a bladder that she would empty the contents into the toilet with the seat up.

Ponoka7 · 03/08/2024 15:34

I do that, but my DP has had a stroke and struggles with mobility and his left hand. I think that she might hover. I see this in women's public toilets all the time. If you have a strong flush the seat gets sprayed.

redpeachcoralcream · 03/08/2024 15:35

I bet she cleans it

blacklippy · 03/08/2024 15:35

The toilet seat up is odd but its the not closing the lid when you flush that gets to me. My SIL does this and she is in all other ways well mannered and refined but she goes to the loo and then flushes with the lid up!

I asked her about it she looked at me like I was a weirdo. I mean seriously who does that?

Well, me, for a start. I have yet to die of germs.

I hover but full cred to an older lady if she can manage it. It requires quite toned thighs!

BotswanaDucks · 03/08/2024 15:42

I always feel a bit anxious when a woman leaves the seat up, why - was she puking in there or something? Someone once told me that nose blowers lift the seat to toss in tissues, but why - you can do that with the seat down?

Maybe they check for pee splash back. A powerful wee could ricochet to the underside of the seat...?

OvernightBloats · 03/08/2024 15:42

I do this! Not always, but most times. It is for hygiene and to make sure the toilet is clean as possible after I use it. Routine is that I use the loo, wipe and then stand up to check that the toilet seat/underneath is clean. There are times that it can be splashed with wee, blood, etc. and so I wipe with loo paper to clean it off. Sounds revolting writing it down. BUT I have shared loos with lots of people who have left the underside of the seat dirty in some way.
So, short answer, is that the toilet remains cleaner and smelling fresher. I leave the seat up when I have finished because it really doesn't bother me if it is up or down. And, no, I am not particularly messy when I use the toilet in case you are wondering this!

CheeseCakeSunflowers · 03/08/2024 15:44

Maybe she drips a bit and if her eyesight is poor she might think this will get rid of any wet on the seat she's missed with toilet paper.

Calliopespa · 03/08/2024 15:44

Oh be actually that could be it - though not pee as much as poo. Some older people get very loose motions which can ricochet some distance. She has probably checked and wiped the underside of the seat.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 03/08/2024 15:45

Is she Australian?
Maybe checking for spiders?

Disgusting behaviour, people will notice this and think your ill mannered and grotty for this.

AnOldCynic · 03/08/2024 16:07

@blacklippy it's not disgusting. Get a grip. What are you worried about?
