Should everyone shut up about private school VAT?

IABU- please, do tell us again how 7% of the children are SO MUCH MORE important than the rest of the children and how this will TERRIBLY affect EVERYONE and especially poooooor people.

IANBU- stfu about private school VAT and ban any more posts from MN.
It'll be less than the schools have put up your fees in the last 5 years and you've managed that haven't you?

OP posts:
emmetgirl · 28/07/2024 21:43

I wish they bloody would.
This is the only place I see people moaning about it.
Virtually nobody else gives a shit.

PickAChew · 28/07/2024 21:45

What exactly do you think this thread will achieve, other than igniting it all over again?

yeesh · 28/07/2024 21:46

It’s only on here, no one in real life gives a fuck

LoveSandbanks · 28/07/2024 21:46

Oh god, I’m so sick of it.

SwingTheMonkey · 28/07/2024 21:47

Why on earth have you started another thread about it?

MumChp · 28/07/2024 21:48

The poor entitled children...

Summerhillsquare · 28/07/2024 21:48

I am with you. The zero sum gameness of it all too, no thought in their heads that maybe all children are valuable and deserve education.

Spirallingdownwards · 28/07/2024 21:49

YABVVVVU for starting a thread about this.

Olympics2024 · 28/07/2024 21:49

Yes please. I do wish people would shut about it.

Kingsway22 · 28/07/2024 21:50

Yes please!

Maybe ‘we’ should just not answer any if the threads, leave them to their own echo chamber of misinformation.

It isn't as if MNetters can change government policy.

ThursdayTomorrow · 28/07/2024 21:52

Thing is it really doesn’t matter. No one outside of MN is remotely bothered, it really isn’t on people’s radar at all.
MN is full of middle class mums who regularly post about it, but in the real world it’s just not an issue.

BigCroc · 28/07/2024 21:53

You should give a shit.
The EU don’t allow education to be taxed, it’s considered that all education is for the greater benefit of society.
It’s already been modelled by HMRC that it won’t raise the money promised to the state sector.
State schools deserve better funding, but they won’t be getting it by this route. The state schools will get very little benefit. They need much, much more funding than this policy will ever raise.
General taxation needs to be increased to fund improvements to the state education sector.

Fififafa · 28/07/2024 21:55

So so sick of the moaning. Pay the fees or put them in state school, but for the love of Christ, shut up! The majority of us don’t care! Aaaand breathe.

We're not in the EU. Private Schools are a business, Businesses are subject to VAT. Get over it.

LiveAtThe · 28/07/2024 21:59

I have seen at least two other threads and now this one asking people to stop complaining about VAT on fees. Which then attracts posters who might complain about fees.

People post online on topics when they are bored. I hate dogs in cafes. I don’t voice this in real life but I contribue to threads about it. Most people just get on with stuff they don’t like in real life. Online forums are a place to vent so people do.

Anyway, it’s beyond silly to start a thread on a topic you don’t like reading about. Easier to ignore private school threads surely!!

BigCroc · 28/07/2024 22:00

But you should care!
This policy is a distraction, the money raised will fall far short of what was promised. If you have children in the state sector you absolutely should care. We deserve to have proper costed funding, not a variable dependent on how many private school parents stay or go.

TheHateIsNotGood · 28/07/2024 22:00

So, like, @BigCroc coz the EU does things a certain way then the UK should too? I believe the UK is no longer a member of the EU and I'm pretty certain the current Govt aren't going to be changing that anytime soon.

And just like the majority of Mnetters and the vast majority of the UK population, with regards to putting VAT on private school fees, no fucks do we give.

BigCroc · 28/07/2024 22:01

I want proper costed funding for dc in the state sector.

StSwithinsDay · 28/07/2024 22:03

The UK is not a member of the EU.
Private schools are businesses and their aim is to make profits.

urbanbuddha · 28/07/2024 22:06

It’s only on Mumsnet. Haven’t heard anyone else anywhere mentioning it and that includes private school parents.

gamerchick · 28/07/2024 22:09

It's stopped the smugness people ooze that their kids are so much better off than the vast majority. Like it's some sort of status thing. That'll do me. The tantrums have been epic though.

People will stop whinging about it eventually when it all settles. They'll dig deep rather than tell the neighbours they can't afford it any more.

BigCroc · 28/07/2024 22:09

This is the ONLY policy to provide money for the state sector. If it doesn’t provide as much money as mentioned in the manifesto, does that mean our schools won’t get any more money/teachers?
HMRC have already modelled that it won’t raise the money promised. It could actually be less than half the original money. What happened to ‘Education, education, education’?

opalescented · 28/07/2024 22:10

I don't see why people shouldn't talk about issues that matter to them

Changingplace · 28/07/2024 22:11

StSwithinsDay · 28/07/2024 21:54

Totally agree, utter nonsense! My heart bleeds 🙄
